History

The British Museum Opens

When the British Museum opened to the public in 1759, its exhibits were based largely on personal collections, including Sir Hans Sloane's Cabinet of Curiosities, Robert Harley's library, and Sir Robert Cotton's antiquities. Today, the museum is home to more than 13 million historical items. Its assortment of prints and drawings is one of the world's finest, and it houses such famous relics as the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles.

Chilembwe Day

John Chilembwe was born in the 1860s in the African nation of Nyasaland, now known as Malawi. Dismayed by the treatment of local peoples at the hands of plantation owners, whom he charged with racism and exploitation, he and a group of 200 followers staged an uprising. They were caught and killed on February 3, 1915. Chilembwe is now memorialized as a hero for African independence and is celebrated annually on January 15 in Malawi, which attained its independence in 1964. His image on a Malawi banknote attests to his enduring popularity as a symbol of Malawi freedom and patriotism.

Canine Commuter Rides Bus Alone to Dog Park

A black Labrador retriever named Eclipse has recently turned heads by riding the bus—alone—to her local dog park in Seattle, Washington. Commuters and transit employees alike have reported seeing Eclipse board the bus in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood and then ride about four stops to the dog park. While dogs are allowed on Seattle buses, they usually have human companions. Eclipse's independent streak does not bother her owner, however, who says that he just meets up with her later at the dog park

If You Were Born Today, January 15

You are a practical person but at the same time highly creative--a rare combination! Others quite naturally respect you. With so many talents and interests, it can be hard to choose only one path. Many of you have quite a few sideline hobbies. Most of you are very good with words. The key to success is focus, which might come a little later in life. You are a little temperamental, and others don't always know what to expect from you as a result. Famous people born today: Martin Luther King Jr., Lloyd Bridges, Gene Krupa, Julian Cope.

“We went backpacking in Sarek National Park but wanted to go deeper into the wilderness, which is why we chose to fly to the border with a helicopter,” writes Sven Zacek. The park in northern Sweden is sometimes called the “Alaska of Europe,” he says. “The sight of the Rapa River Delta in autumn colors was amazing, and I asked the pilot to do a couple of circles before landing.”
