Play God Day JANUARY 9, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Play God Day

If we all saw then the concept of Play God Day is pretty simple. What would you do if you were god for a day? It would of course be easy to come up with a plethora of ways in which we might go on a wish-fulfillment journey and do all of those activities and things we wished we’d done or currently wish we could do. If you’ve “got the power” then it’s easy to focus on yourself and all the things you want.
However, Play God Day seeks to get past those self-centered tendencies and calls us to extend out beyond the confines of our own desires and encourage or touch another person’s day. If you were god how would you change the world? If you had the place of the higher being you could set right all the wrongs you see in the world and that is the theme and purpose for this day.
Humans have always imagined what they might do if they were in the place of god and even those not given to such beliefs will often speak in terms of what they think a god ought to do. Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs were considered gods and would act as such and many other ancient texts reference men seeking to become gods or to take the place of a god.
In recent culture films such as explore the idea of what it means to play god and what those powers should entail. The discussion of “playing god” has become more prominent even as technology advances and humans delve into new areas of biology and other fields.
The purpose of Play God Day is to perform some kind act for another person, or just generally contribute to the well-being of the world as a whole. There are many ways to go about this, if you’re so inclined.
However far you take your observation of Play God Day, the consideration of what you might change in this world of ours is interesting at the very least, and maybe even eye-opening. You may not be god, but you certainly have the power to make the world a better place.

History

Richard Halliburton (1900)

Halliburton was an American adventurer and pioneer of adventure journalism. He liked to recreate historical and legendary feats in his travels, such as Hannibal's passage over the Alps on an elephant and Odysseus's journey around the Mediterranean, and made his living writing and lecturing about his experiences. He is, however, perhaps best known for having swum the length of the Panama Canal. He disappeared while attempting to sail a Chinese junk, the Sea Dragon, from Hong Kong.

Black Nazarene Fiesta

The Fiesta of Quiapo District is the largest festival in Manila, Philippines. It is held each year in honor of the Quiapo District's patron saint, the Black Nazarene, a life-sized statue of Jesus carved from blackwood, whose shrine is located in Quiapo's baroque church. The traditional nine-day fiesta features nightly cultural events, band concerts, and fireworks. On the last day of the festival, January 9, there is a procession of barefoot men pulling a carriage that holds the 200-year-old statue on the way to Calvary.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, January 9

Although you can be impatient when things are not turning out according to plan, you are very patient with people overall. Forever curious about how others "tick", you are a natural psychologist and extremely observant. At times, you are restless, and certainly thrive on change more than the typical Capricorn. You are extremely committed to what you do, however, and you can most certainly be counted on. You are able to look at the big picture, which is very comforting to others. Famous people born today: Simone de Beauvoir, Richard M. Nixon, Dave Matthews, Bob Denver, Joan Baez, Jimmy Page, Joey Lauren Adams.

The Australian Canine Heroes Protecting a Colony of the World’s Smallest Penguins

By Sumitra
Middle Island, a picturesque outcrop located off the coast of southern Victoria in Australia, is home to a colony of the world’s smallest penguins. Originally known as fairy penguins, these adorable little birds are no taller than a foot and weigh only about 1kg. There used to be hundreds of them at one point, but their population dwindled as they were hunted by foxes. That is, until a chicken farmer came up with an ingenious solution to use dogs as bodyguards for the penguins.
The problem was first noticed in the year 2000, when the sea’s natural current led to increased sand-build up, encouraging a growth in the fox population. The island is uninhabited by humans, and separated from the mainland by a 30-meter stretch of water. So at low tide, it’s easy for the foxes to cross from the mainland and reach the island, and hunt the adorable penguins.
Soon, the fairy penguin population started dwindling to the point where they were in danger of being completely wiped out “We went from a point where we had about 800 penguins down to where we could only find four,” said Peter Abbott from the Penguin Preservation Project. “In our biggest bird kill, we found 360 birds killed over about two nights. Foxes are thrill killers. They’ll kill anything they can find. The colony really was on its last legs and just one more fox attack would’ve finished it off.”
