An ode to…the time clock? The assembly line? The office computer? The poem may need some work, but this is what Poetry At Work Day is all about – finding the beauty in your job and putting it into some form of artful prose.
Every day in our jobs we encounter people and situations that could be put into verse – whether it be a line from an important presentation, a rhythm you notice in the manufacturing process, or perhaps the feelings you wish to encapsulate about the people you serve or a situation you faced. Poetry at Work Day is a great opportunity to take a bit of time to slow down and get your creative juices flowing – to try to put into words in a beautiful way an aspect of your workplace. So, get brainstorming and creating your poetic masterpieces – the world is waiting to hear them!

You are very partnership-oriented, always in mind that things are better shared, even the smallest things and simplest of activities. It is not that you are dependent exactly--in fact, you have a decidedly independent streak--it's more that you truly enjoy good company. Colored Jelly Bean "Glass": A Tutorial for Kids**
A few days ago I tried a colorful and easy but messy craft for kids to use outside in the snow or freezing weather. So here's what you can do to make your own colored 'glass'.
You need:
water balloons
food coloring
plastic bag(s)
cookie sheet with sides
newspapers or old towels
scissors
old clothing that you don't mind getting dirty
snow boots, coats & gloves (for after)
water balloons
food coloring
plastic bag(s)
cookie sheet with sides
newspapers or old towels
scissors
old clothing that you don't mind getting dirty
snow boots, coats & gloves (for after)
WORD OF CAUTION: This is a messy craft! Food coloring will stain, so do this with newspaper or towels and/or clean up spills right away, wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty and make sure you wipe your hands before touching those clean walls! Or better yet, do parts of this outside in the cold.
Put 1 drop of food coloring into a balloon. 1 drop is enough. More than that, and it gets messier.
Carefully fill the balloon with water. Follow the directions on the package. (You may have to squeeze the water down into the balloon with one hand while the other hand is holding the top of the balloon against the end of the spigot (faucet). Carefully remove and tie off. Repeat. Place in plastic bag(s)* and freeze.
Next day: Put on old clothes. Place towels or newspaper down for protecting surfaces. (If doing outside, then you probably can skip this part). Have an adult cut the balloon. The kids can peel it off. Careful - there might be some colored liquid that falls out. Wearing gloves at this point is good to keep your hands from becoming icicles.
Put the colored glass onto the cookie sheet (this helps to catch drips).
Put on your coats, boots and gloves... maybe a hat.
Go out and play.
But no throwing at each other - it'll be like getting pummeled with a rock. Ouch!
* You don't have to put them into plastic bags, but it's a precaution against freezer spills.

Man Generates Almost No Garbage in Two and a Half Year Trash-Free Experiment
By Sumitra
Darshan Karwat, a post-doctorate at the University of Michigan, is making headlines for having maintained an incredibly frugal and sustainable lifestyle during his student years. The man gave up fast food, new clothes, and even toilet paper, until he got to a point where his trash for an entire year fit in just two plastic bags!
Karwat, who is originally from India, started the trash-free experiment when he lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and managed to keep it going for two and a half years. In the first year, he produced only 7.5 lbs of trash, and in the second year, he brought that number down to a meager 6 lbs, which is a mind-blowing 0.4 percent of the 1,500 lbs of yearly trash produced by the average American.
Looking back, Karwat says that his inspiration to start the project came from an episode of the radio show The Story, on which he heard of a British couple who lived trash-free. “I walked home from my laboratory at the University of Michigan and told my roommate Tim that I thought I could do better – I’d live trash- and recycling-free and that I’d start soon,” Karwat wrote in an essay for The Washington Post. “And just like that, I began an experiment in individual activism in the face of large environmental problems.”
