Opposite Day JANUARY 25, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Opposite Day

Don’t celebrate Opposite Day by not doing everything the right way around. Behave exactly as you wouldn’t on a normal day, and undertake tasks in a straight-forward, back-to-front manner.

History

William Somerset Maugham (1874)

Maugham was an English novelist, playwright, and short-story writer who abandoned a career in medicine when his first novel had some success. He wrote several popular plays and a total of eight novels before writing his breakthrough masterpiece, the partly autobiographical Of Human Bondage (1915). An expert storyteller, Maugham based many of his stories on his own experiences.

Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul

Saul of Tarsus, a highly educated, devout Jew, was converted to Christianity on the road to Damascus not long after the death of Jesus Christ. Later, he was known as Paul and became the most influential leader in the history of the church. At St. Paul's Chapel in New York City, the path through the graveyard is closed for 48 hours, beginning on the eve of the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. At one time, the weather on this day was linked to predictions about the coming year. Fair weather on St. Paul's Day was said to presage a prosperous year; snow or rain an unproductive one.

Ninth Planet May Exist in Solar System Beyond Pluto, Scientists Report

There might be a ninth planet in the solar system after all — and it is not Pluto. Two astronomers reported on Wednesday that they had compelling signs of something bigger and farther away — something that would definitely satisfy the current definition, where Pluto falls apart.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, January 25

You have tremendous insight into others' character and motivations. A little mysterious yourself, you need time to retreat and refresh your spirit frequently. You don't always feel understood, but you are also complicated and don't always let others in! However, you thrive in partnership. Your nature is a dual one, and you may hold down two different jobs as well. You are attracted to strong and determined people. With intellect and intuition equally strong, you are a highly interesting and intelligent friend. Famous people born today: Alicia Keys, Robert Burns, W. Somerset Maugham, Virginia Woolf.

Photograph by Tarun Chhabra, National Geographic
Tarun Chhabra’s 15-year effort to capture Indian culture in a “self-initiated” photo project has yielded this “good and rare picture” of Holi celebrants in India. Holi is the Hindu festival of love in which participants splash each other with bright colors that represent “energy, life, and joy.” Chhabra writes of the experience, “I was kneeling down in the middle of a group of people who were singing bhajans (devotional songs). People were throwing lots of water and colors, and I was fully drenched … My eyes were filled with water-and-color paste, and this was very irritating and painful. With great difficulty I tried to slightly open my eye … and found the beautiful moment unfolding just in front of me. People … were singing devotional songs, and red color was flying like clouds. This amazing moment [gave] me inner strength, and I dared to open my eye slightly more to compose the picture.”

Bows Before Bros

I've done the Saartje Bootees a few times but I wanted something a little different. I couldn't find any booties with bows that I particularly liked so it was time for some improvisation on the old faithful. These are a quick little knit with a beautiful outcome. I do want to play around with doing them in the round so that there's no seaming, but for now here's what I've got.

The sizes are NB and about 0-3 months, don't be afraid to go up a needle size to make them last a little longer.  These are knit on needle size US 1

CO 31 (35) sts in bottom color CC
Row 1: k15 (17), pm, k1, pm k15 (17)
Row 2: kfb, k to marker, m1, k1, m1, k to last st, kfb
Row 3 (and all odd rows): k
Row 4: kfb, k to marker, m1, k3, m1, k to last st, kfb
Row 6: kfb, k to marker, m1, k1, m1, k3, m1, k1, m1, k to last st kfb
Row 8: kfb, k to marker, m1, k1, m1, k7, m1, k1, m1, k to last st kfb
Row 9-18 (20): k (removing markers as you come to them) you will have 10 (11) garter stitch ridges.
Row 19 (21): switch to top color MC and k
Row 20 (22): k15 (17) ssk 5 times, k1, k2tog 5 times, k to end
Row 21-23 (23-25): k (note to this point these are the Saartje Bootees)
Row 24 (26): k16 (17), ssk 2 times, k1, k2tog 2 times, k to end
Row 26 (27): BO

Time to Seam
For the Bow:
this is also NB then 0-3 Month
CO 8 (10)
K in garter stitch for 28 (32) rows that's 14 (16) garter ridges
BO
for center bow CO 3 (4)
K in sts for 9 (11) rows
BO

To attach the bow I make sure that the knot is well centered and I throw a stitch through the whole thing to keep in from pulling out. Attach center knot and then just tack the four corners of the bow where you want them. This gives you some play with how the bow looks on the bootie!

Huzzah! It's that easy, great for a last minute shower gift or boots for your babe!

Recycled Milk Carton Bird Feeder Shaped Like An Owl!

Milk Carton Owl Bird Feeder Craft For Kids
Recycled milk cartons are great for crafting, and especially for making bird feeders shaped like owls!  As you can see, our feeders have yet to be filled, but we won't forget!
Depending on the kinds of birds that one would like to feed, you can of course add a little stick which runs from from to back to give the birds a perch. The small birds around here are quite hardy and will have no problem going right into the milk carton, though we'll have to see.
Milk Carton Bird Feeder Craft Owl
You'll Need:
  • recycled milk or juice cartons
  • white paint
  • sand paper
  • a permanent black marker
  • string or ribbon for hanging
How To:
We first lightly sanded the milk cartons to help the paint adhere, and then we applied two coats of white water based house paint, since that is what we had on hand. The results are a little lumpy and chalky, but fine for a project like this one!
After paint had dried we cut eyes from a piece of cereal box, applied with glue and then drew details with the black permanent marker. Make a hole in the top with a hole punch or something sharp, and hang!
Mom did cut out the wings and openings with a craft knife and scissors, an initial step that I would recommend doing for younger children, or for those who need some encouragement to get started.

Man Born Without Arms Becomes Professional Tattoo Artist

By Sumitra
27-year-old Brian Tagalog was born without arms, but he has never let this serious adversity keep him from leading a normal life. He learned to use his feet to perform mundane tasks, drive a car, fly planes and even ink intricate tattoo designs. The ambitious young man believes he is the only certified tattoo artist without arms in the world.
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Tagalog moved with his family to Tucson, Arizona, where he attended Sunnyside High School and the University of Arizona. He had always shown an interest in drawing, and set his mind on becoming a professional tattoo artist. Not many people gave him a chance, but he steadily honed his foot drawing skills, and after his aunt helped him buy his first tattoo gun, he learned to operate it with his toes just as well as others did with their hands.

This 1955 ‘Good House Wife’s Guide’ Explains How Wives Should Treat Their Husbands
littlethings

It’s so fascinating to learn about how people used to live — especially when we discover that not much has really changed.
However, sometimes you come across some old traditions that you simply can’t believe people ever followed — like these odd dating rituals throughout history.
But what women in the 1950s were expected to do for their husbands? Well, those traditions have certainly flown right out the window!
In May of 1955, Housekeeping Monthly published an article entitled, “The Good Wife’s Guide,” detailing all the ways that a wife should act and how best she can be a partner to her husband and a mother to her children.
It may feel a little strange to accept these rules today, but it remains so interesting to see how society once behaved.

1950s Good Housewife Guide

1.) Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs.
2.) Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

3.) Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.
4.) Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

5.) Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper, etc. and then run a dust cloth over the tables.

1950s Good Housewife Guide

6.) Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

7.) Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes.
8.) Children are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

9.) Be happy to see him. Free him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him. Listen to him.
10.) You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first — remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

1950s Good Housewife Guide

11.) Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

12.) Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where you husband can renew himself in body and spirit.
13.) Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

14.) Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

15.) Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.
16.) Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

17.) Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment of integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.
1950s Good Housewife Guide

18.) A good wife always knows her place.
