Golf Day MAY 14, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Golf Day

Its time to pull those clubs out of storage, dust them off, and get ready to hit the green again! That’s right, it’s Golf Day! Heralding the beginning of the more Golfer friendly part of the year, Golfers Day’s origin is shrouded in the myth and legend of this particular sport. Some people say its origins lay in 1916, when the first professional golf tournament was held on this day. Others claim that the first tubular steel golf club shaft was allowed to be used in championship play for the first time on this day. Whatever the case, get on your favorite Golf Sweater, it’s time to play hookie from work and tee off!

The history of Golf is agreed upon to a certain point, but its ancient history is as contested as your partners Birdie. The accepted history of the game goes back to 15th century Scotland, though it has the ignoble origin of being banned by James II in 1457, it would seem his majesty felt that this fine game was serving to distract his men from the more gentlemanly art of archery. But this is only the first occurrence of it being mentioned as ‘Golf’, there are games that are at the very least identifiable as progenitors coming from the Romans and Chinese, and potentially even the Persians.
The game of Golf is played upon a course that has a certain number of goals to reach. Each of these goals contains a hole precisely 4.25” in diameter. This may seem an arbitrary number, and in fact, it is! The size of a hole in golf was determined by the size of a pipe used to reinforce a crumbling hole in St. Andrews, and thus it has been such ever since! The hole is located in a special place on the course known as the green, so named for the specially tended grass that makes it stand out from the rest of the course.
Throughout the course are varying terrain and hazards, from pools of water to pits of sand, there are many areas that get in the intrepid golfers way as he tries to get from the beginning of the course to the coveted hole at the end. A golf course typically consists of 18 holes, but 9 hole courses exist, merely requiring you to play through them twice for a full round of 18 holes.
Everyone who has heard of Golf has no doubt heard of the various types of clubs, even if only in old cartoons or in off color jokes. There are three basic types of golf clubs, the first being those known as ‘woods’, which are club with long shafts and large heads, intended to drive the ball over long distances from open lies, such as a fairway or tee box.
The next type are known as ‘irons’, being a type of club with a short shaft and a head of solid metal with a mostly flat striking surface. These can be used for many sorts of shots, but are typically used for short distances when approaching the tee. The last type is called the ‘putter’, a club designed specifically for the purpose for which it was named, putting the ball across the last stretch of green into the much coveted hole.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer, or new to the sport, this day would be the perfect day to get out to the green and play a few holes. Just remember to wear your golf shoes, argyle socks, and sweater vest! A golfer needs every bit of luck they can get!

History

Skylab Is Launched (1973)

Launched into orbit in 1973, Skylab was the first US space station. It carried a laboratory for studying the human body's adaptation to weightlessness and a powerful solar telescope. Three successive astronaut crews conducted research aboard Skylab for a total of 171 days in 1973–74. Though Skylab was intended to be reused, increased solar activity caused its orbit to degrade faster than expected. In 1979, the 75-tonne station reentered Earth's atmosphere and broke up.

Tale out of School

Photograph by Siddhartha Banerjee, National Geographic
Siddhartha Banerjee captured this picture during recess at a secondary school in Kolkata, India. “They had their midday meals and went to play,” he writes. Suddenly, a student emerged from a classroom and leaned over to look below. “It seemed he was invisible to the rest of the students already playing, but it seemed the boy was intently watching them, as if his soul [were] already there with the boys out there.”

RECIPE
Spiced Pumpkin Seed Brittle
 Kimberley Hasselbrink
Yield: About 6-8 servings
Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup hulled pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas; feel free to use any tree nut you’d prefer)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Candy thermometer
(For the Pistachio Sesame brittle, use 2 tablespoons sesame seeds and 3/4 cup pistachios.)
Grease a 9×12 baking sheet with butter and set aside.
In a small, heavy-bottomed pot over a medium low flame, melt the butter with the cinnamon, chile powder, ginger and sea salt. Add the sugar and stir thoroughly. Continue to stir sugar almost constantly to prevent burning. When the temperature of the mixture reaches 280 degrees, add the nuts. Continue stirring almost constantly.
The sugar will slowly begin to clump and melt. Keep stirring! At 300 degrees, remove from heat and quickly stir in the baking powder.
Working quickly, pour the brittle onto the greased baking pan, spreading with a spatula. Let stand until thoroughly cooled and hardened. (You can expedite this by putting it into the fridge.)

CrockPot Bacon and Cheese Dip Recipe

I got a new toy! This little guy is small. The stoneware is attached to the heating element and the capacity is only 1 1/2 cups.

He is so very cute. Here he is next to my coffee cup for a size comparison (yes, the girls and I have decided that the Little Dipper is a boy. The other's are girls, yet this is a boy. We can't explain our reasoning).

The Ingredients:

These are the proportions for this crock---if you are going to use a larger one, adjust accordingly.

--1/3 cup milk
--5 pieces of cooked bacon
--2 slices of American Cheese
--2 slices of cheddar
--1 t worcestershire sauce

The Directions.

Add the milk to the crock, and crumble the cheese and bacon on top.
Cover and cook for 1 hour.
This new crock doesn't have a heating control--you just plug it in and it's on. I would do 1 hr on high and 2 hours on low, probably.

The Verdict.

I really liked the flavor of this dip. We had it with tortilla chips, but I imagine celery, carrots, or bread cubes would work nicely. It had a smokey flavor and wasn't overly greasy.

NAPKINS PENDULUM

Today a new garland made of napkins.

What you need:

* Napkins in the color you want
* Scissors
* Ruler
* A piece of rope

If you first cut strips in the napkin. You can choose how wide you want them. Do not worry if you strip a little crooked, this still does not see you later.
Then you fold the napkin and roll it up, and fold it in half so you get a loop.

Repeat this until you have enough for your pendulum.

Then grab your rope and doing that through the loop of your napkin and napkin make your relationships by means of a button. Repeat this until all your towels hanging on a rope. Keep in mind the distance between all napkins. It's nice when they all hang the same distance apart. You must use your ruler.
After they all hang poof your napkins so they pretty wide.

And tada your napkins pendulum is finished!

Tip: Hang him in the garden for all your garden parties, BBQ's or just for fun this spring / summer. Very nice when the wind blows the napkins and if it rains it gives nothing because you make so little money for a new!

Walking Advertising Billboard Tattoos His Body with Logos of His Favorite Brands, for Free

By SumitraIf you think about it, logos are works of art too – they’re clever, well designed and come in a variety of colors. But are they appealing enough to tattoo on to your body? Well, for 23-year-old Indian tattoo artist Jason George, they are. The self-confessed ‘human billboard’, sports hundreds of tattooed logos of international companies that have impacted his life in some way.
“I know it seems insane but these tattoos are my way of giving thanks to the brands that have made an impact on my life,” said Jason, a college-dropout and founder of 21 Tattoo Studio in Mumbai. The logos inked all over his body include those of his favorite TV channel, mobile phone networks, fast food chains, and social networking sites. “All the logos that you will find on my body have a special place in my heart. They are related to my life in some way and I have memories and stories attached to these brands.”

Put A Tea Bag In A Sink Full Of Dirty Dishes

She-Places-A-Tea-Bag-In-A-Sink-Full-Od-Dirty-Dishes
This is a story all of us can tell – at the end of a long day, we come home to a sink full of dishes. It doesn't matter who left them, perhaps it was your spouse or a roommate, but now you can’t prepare anything without cleaning them first. You wish there was someone else that can do them for you, but at the end of the day it is your job. And that is why you will love this cleaning trick. The next time you have a sink full of dirty dishes, drop a tea bag or two into the water and let everything soak. The tea will help break up grease and food stains, limiting the amount of scrubbing you’ll have to do.
Of course we all know that tea is a beverage, but there are a lot of foods and ingredients that can be used for performing various tasks around the house and making things easier. And tea is one of them. It can help degrease dirty dishes, and is also an excellent deodorizer and can help freshen up your home. It’s important to note that we are talking about used tea bags – thus, they can be used for brewing and then given a new life around the house. Tea leaves can also help alleviate minor skin irritations. I’m making sure to never again throw away my tea bags.
