Pizza with the Works (Except Anchovies) Day NOVEMBER 12, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Pizza with the Works (Except Anchovies) Day

When faced with the question of “what would you like on your Pizza?”, the pizza novice might answer “everything, please!”. This is a rookie mistake, the correct answer is ‘everything except anchovies!’, at least that’s the case for those of us who aren’t keen on those arguably pizza-spoiling salty fish! Pizza With The Works Except Anchovies Day is all about indulging, but without the anchovies, please. (sorry, but i happen to adore anchovies)

History

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815)

Stanton was an American reformer and a leader of the women's suffrage movement. In 1840, she married abolitionist Henry Brewster Stanton, and they attended the World's Anti-Slavery Convention in London, where she joined Lucretia Mott in objecting to their exclusion from the assembly. A proponent of legal, political, and industrial equality for women, she later joined forces with Susan B. Anthony in the women's suffrage movement.

Why Did Those Giant Rats Go Extinct? And Could They Come Back?

"Rodents of unusual size? I don't think they exist," says Westley, the young heroic lead in "The Princess Bride," an instant before he gets tackled by a rat the size of a bear. Turns out the 1987 cult classic film has some reality behind it.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, November 12

You are determined and some might say stubborn. The trick for you is to channel your determination into something constructive—into a life path that suits you well. Otherwise, your tendency to become fixated can lead you down the wrong path, especially if you struggle with self-esteem issues. Your mind is strong, and you possess significant powers of attraction. You have a good eye for form and style. Emotional self-indulgence is a potential downfall for you. You know a good opportunity when you see one, and you are generally not afraid to take a risk.  Famous people born today: Stephanie Powers, Tonya Harding, Neil Young, Grace Kelly, Ryan Gosling, Anne Hathaway.

Out for an anniversary stroll with his girlfriend, Louis Schneider had to step "a bit over the edge" to capture this shot of the Manneporte, a rock formation in Étretat, France. The area has attracted photographers and artists for well over a century: "The cliffs at Étretat are among the most interesting on the French coast," reads a 1915 National Geographic magazine article, "The Beauties of France." "Étretat is a noted resort, especially affected by artists and literary men, who are attracted by its picturesque and curious situation."

Do Las Vegas Churches accept gambling chips?

This may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas
but there are more catholic churches than casinos.

Not surprisingly, some worshipers at Sunday services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed.

Since they get chips from many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to collect the offerings.

The churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in.

This is done by the chip monks.

You didn't even see it coming did you?

CrockPot Stuffed Onions Recipe

Have you ever had a stuffed onion? I hadn't, until last night.I started digging around the fridge and freezer and decided to stuff some onions. Adam said it wouldn't work, which gave me the push I needed. Guess what? They worked, and they were tasty. The kids had no interest, but who could blame them? They're onions. Stuffed. With stuff.

The Ingredients.
--4 large yellow onions
--1 handful of baby spinach
--1 chicken and apple sausage (I think a spicy one would be good, too!)
--1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
--2 T chopped pecans (or walnuts or pine nuts)
--1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
--1 T olive oil

The Directions.

This is enough filler for 4 large onions, and I used my 6.5 quart crockpot. If you're interested in cooking more than 4, increase the ingredients, and feel free to stack the onions. They will still cook.

Peel and core the onions. If you don't have one of those apple-corer thingies, this will be hard to do. I tried to core with a knife, and found it immensely difficult. I used the corer 4 times for each onion---you want a pretty big hole.

Chop up the spinach and bell pepper, and put it in a mixing bowl. Chop up the sausage and add it to the bowl along with the chopped pecans and the Parmesan cheese. Mix well.

Put the 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the bottom of your crockpot, and swirl around so the bottom is coated.

Stuff each onion with as much filling as you can.

Put the onions into the crockpot.

Cover and cook on high for 4-6 hours, or on low for 7-8. I was surprised how long they took to cook. I cooked ours on high for a bit over 5 hours.

The onions are done when they have turned golden brown and are pliable.

The Verdict.

These smelled wonderful while they were cooking, and made a stormy night feel warm and cozy. I thought the flavor was quite good, and was happy to have discovered another "something" to stuff. Adam wanted his with a steak. They are more of a side dish than a full meal, unless you eat 2.

Jar of Happiness
runningwithglitter

I have seen these fun little cupcakes baked right in the jar over at Babble and had to give it a try myself.
It's an awesome tutorial but I wanted to make mine on a smaller scale and simplify the mess a little.
I did make mine a little different and wanted to share with you all what worked for me.
1)Mix a white cake mix as directed. Separate into as many bowls as you want colors. (now that I think about it you could just mix the batter and food coloring up in the baggie and save a bowl mess)

2) Place each color of batter into individual gallon baggies. Cut a corner of the baggie off.

3)Using the baggie you just filled with caked batter, layer to fill each 1/2 pint jar halfway full of cake batter. If you fill it more than that, it will bake over and out of the jar.

4) Place on a baking sheet and bake at 325 for 45 or so minutes until your knife comes out clean.

5)Scoop the top of the cupcake off to make room for the icing.

(it was a fun surprise to see how beautiful it was inside)

I can’t say that pizza isn’t an important part of my life, but this couple took their dedication to our favorite carb-loaded, cheese-covered meal to a new level. They made it part of their wedding!

CLEVER

Senior Science

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much.  People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.
Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline.  The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr.  Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time.  The brains of older people do not get weak.

On the contrary, they simply know more.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise. (Actually it has been proven that when the brain sees another room it forgets the last room and concentrates on the new room - THAT IS WHY - so it is not our fault.)

SO THERE .  Now when I reach for a word or a name, I won't excuse myself by saying "I'm having a senior moment".  Now, I'll say "My disk is full".
