Earth Day AP 22, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Earth Day

Celebrate and protect our natural environment by taking part in Earth Day. Join with community groups to explore environmental and ecological issues on local and international scales, and work towards making a difference to our habitat.
If you’re really committed, why not learn the words to the Earth Day anthem (sung to the tune of ‘Ode to Joy’):
Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world

The Oklahoma Land Rush (1889)

On April 22, 1889, some 50,000 people lined up to grab a piece of the 2 million acres (8,000 sq km) being made available by the US government in the first land run into the Unassigned Lands, later known as the state of Oklahoma. Each settler could claim a lot of up to 160 acres (0.65 sq km). A number of participants illegally entered and hid in the area before the run officially began at noon in order to quickly claim the choicest homesteads

Immanuel Kant (1724)

Kant was a German metaphysician who shook the foundations of Western philosophy. In his Critique of Pure Reason, Kant proposed that objective reality is known only insofar as it conforms to the essential structure of the knowing mind and that things beyond experience are unknowable. He thus concluded that the existence of God, freedom, and immortality can be neither affirmed nor denied on theoretical grounds

Moors and Christians Fiesta

Moors and Christians fiestas are celebrated all over Spain, but the Fiesta of Alcoyis one of the most colorful. Coinciding with the feast day of St. George, it commemorates the victory of Christians over the Moorish leader al-Azraq in 1276. The fiesta begins on the morning of April 22 with the entry of the Christians; the Moors arrive in the afternoon, dressed in exotic costumes. On April 23, the relic ofSt. George is carried in procession to the parish church. On the third day, the battle is reenacted, and an apparition of St. George appears on the battlements of the castle.

Newly Discovered Frog Has Transparent Belly, Looks Like Kermit

Discovering new species in the wild is hard enough. Discovering new species in the wild that look like hugely popular pop culture figures is even harder. So one can only imagine the delight felt by Brian Kubicki when he came across a new species of glass frog in the jungles of Costa Rica that's pretty much a dead ringer for Kermit.

If You Were Born Today, April 22

You are a perfectionist with an unusual perspective on the world. Both imaginative and conservative,  you have a knack for bringing both worlds to whatever you do. While you are charming and witty, you can be impatient with others when they are not following quickly enough or they are otherwise in your way! Famous people born today: Jack Nicholson, Glen Campbell, Peter Frampton, Amber Heard, Francis Capra, Aaron Spelling.

Picture of the day
Atmosphere of Jupiter
A 14-frame clip showing the atmosphere of Jupiter as viewed from the NASA probe Cassini. Taken over a span of 24 Jupiter rotations between October 31 and November 9, 2000, this clip shows various patterns of motion across the planet. The Great Red Spot rotates counterclockwise, and the uneven distribution of its high haze is obvious. To the east (right) of the Red Spot, oval storms, like ball bearings, roll over and pass each other. East-west bands adjacent to each other move at different rates. Strings of small storms rotate around northern-hemisphere ovals. The large grayish-blue "hot spots" at the northern edge of the white Equatorial Zone change over time as they proceed eastward across the planet. Ovals in the north rotate counter to those in the south. Small, very bright features appear quickly and randomly in turbulent regions, possibly lightning storms. The smallest visible features at the equator are about 600 km (370 miles) across.

CATALINA Chicken Breasts recipe

Margarita Chicken CrockPot Recipe

I read a lot of blogs. An awful lot. One good thing about my job (other than reading a lot of blogs) is that I read food blogs and am inspired daily to try new recipes, and also to recreate them in my crockpot.

The Ingredients.

--4-5 frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs
--1/4 cup dijon mustard
--1/4 cup honey
--1 T gluten free soy sauce
--2 minced garlic cloves
--3 T margarita mix

The Directions.

--mix your sauce ingredients in a mixing bowl
--plop the frozen chicken in the bottom of your crockpot
--cover with the sauce
--cook on low for 7-9 hours or on high for 4-5. If your chicken is fresh, check it after 3 hours on high or 6 hours on low.

The Verdict.

This was delicious! The kids enjoyed it a lot, Adam and I each had seconds, and we didn't have any leftovers.
I think what I liked the most about this dish is that I wouldn't have come up with this flavor combination on my own---but it so totally works and tastes amazing.

Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love. - Mother Teresa

The answer is to laugh it off, which is just what Ayanna Williams did when on a tour to promote her book.
The day started normally enough as it can for a woman with 23-inch-long fingernails. She was doing interviews and posing for photos when one of her precious nails broke off!
How precious are her nails? She refers to them as her “pearls, her jewels, her girls.”
When the reporter asked if it hurt when she broke her nail, Ayanna replied “It hurts my feelings. That’s it! ”
