Learning to read is something that most people do as children. Learning to love to read is something that can be developed at any time. Read Across America Day can be the perfect moment to fall in love with reading! There are so many ways to read now with technology making it easy to carry a book with you no matter where you go thanks to the internet. Some people just cannot forget the feel and smell of a book in hand and prefer to read their books physically. So, grab your favorite, and take time to enjoy a good book!
The National Education Association (NEA) has sponsored Read Across America Day since 1998. The NEA is an organization that works for the advancement of public education. They have been working to promote reading across the nation with events planned in schools, libraries and throughout communities. There is also a pledge that group organizers or teachers can take that will allow their plans to be posted on the NEA’s website. The hope is that this will draw more attention and attendance at the event.
It is not just teachers and librarians who are stepping up to help create another generation of book lovers, but celebrities as well. Since 1998, sport stars, actors, and other celebrities have taken time to sit and read to students and help bring the spotlight to this worthy cause.
This might be one of the easiest holidays to celebrate. You don’t need to wade through crowds at stores, spend a ton of money or have a house filled with guests. All you need to do is pick up a book and read! How and where you do it is up to you. Some places that are often thought of are in a nice warm bubble bath, a hammock, or in a cozy chair snuggled with a pet. You could try out something more public by heading to your favorite coffee shop or bookstore.

Read Across America Day - MARCH 2
The National Education Association in 1997 moved to create
a day to celebrate reading in the United States. The following
year in 1998 the day became an official observance in the
United States encouraging reading among our youth.
March 2nd was selected as the date for this observance
because it is the birth date of Dr Seuss who wrote many
famous kids books. Read Across America Day is not an
national holiday but rather an observance.
2. March is National Crochet Month
March 16-22, 1998 was declared National Crochet Week by CGOA. Pam Oddi was President of the organization at the time. A flyer was included in the Chain Link newsletter with ideas for all members on ways to celebrate crochet during the week.
In 1999, Pam designed a bookmark (links you with the pattern) with the design, "I heart Crochet” in filet crochet. The copyright-free pattern instructions were included in the Chain Link newsletter for several years for all members, and American School of Needlework helped spread the word bout National Crochet Week and CGOA by distributing a copy of the bookmark pattern to all who ordered from their latest catalog.
In March 2000, with so much to celebrate, National Crochet Week became National Crochet Month!
Here’s their Challenge:
1. Create as many 7” x 9” rectangles as you choose for Lapghans for Warm Up America! Deadline to enter is July 1st.
2. See "Warm Up America" at www.WarmUpAmerica.org for details on preferred lapghan sizes and 4 free crochet patterns to use if desired by your group.
3. When your Chapter is finished please count and double count all your rectangles and then make a sign. Include the Chapter name (as per CGOA website) and the total number of rectangles made. Next take a picture of the sign hopefully with some Chapter Members holding it and email to Karen McKenna CGOAChapters@Gmail.com. Please include the number of CGOA members in your Chapter as winners are based on a ratio of members to number of rectangles made, this way smaller chapters can compete with larger chapters. Do not send any finished rectangles to Karen, please donate to your favorite local charity.
4. Winners will be announced on Saturday, July 28th in the Market Place at the Chain Link Conference in Chicago!

The Magdalen Reading is one of three surviving fragments of a large mid-15th-century oil on panel altarpiece by the Early Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden. The panel, originally oak, was completed some time between 1435 and 1438 and has been in the National Gallery, London since 1860. It shows a woman with pale skin, high cheek bones, and oval eyelids who is identifiable as Mary Magdalene from the jar of ointment placed in the foreground, which is her traditional attribute in Christian art.

Making these craft stick puzzles is SO easy! All you need are some wooden sticks (popsicle sticks), Mod Podge & paintbrush, Dr. Seuss images of your choice, and an X-Acto knife! If you have a book falling apart, you could even cut out some book pages. Or, you can just find whatever image(s) you like online (that’s what I did). Then, you’ll cut your image(s) to fit the width of the sticks. The longer the image, the harder the puzzle – so keep that in mind when you’re creating and choosing images!
Figure out how many sticks you need to to fit the image exactly. This print needed 15. So, line all the sticks up so their edges are touching. Then, spread a very thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of the image. Set that side on the sticks. Then, paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the image and the sticks. Let dry. Once fully dry, use an X-ACTO knife to cut the sticks apart!
And, that’s it! Once the sticks are cut apart, you have a simple Dr. Seuss puzzle! It’s a great quiet activity for kids to do – perfect for keeping in a baggie in your purse even!

Nature’s Photoshop – Venus the Two Face Cat
By Sumitra
Meet Venus, a five-year-old tabby who’s become an internet
sensation for her strikingly unusual appearance – half of her
face is orange while the other is black!
The divide, right down the center of her face, seems too
perfect to be true, so much so that you’ll be tempted to
dismiss it as fake. It doesn’t help that her eyes are of
different colors as well, one green and the other blue. But
on her website, Venus insists that she is 100 percent natural.
“No makeup at all,” she says. “Not even eyeliner. In the
salon where I get my pedicures done, Photoshop and spray
paint aren’t even allowed.” And she also dismisses the idea
that she’s a Chimera – a mythical lion-goat-snake creature.
“It’s appalling, but hey, I didn’t invent the English language.”
CLEVER
VICKS Tricks

If you thought that Vicks topical cream was just for relieving throat, chest and head congestion while you sleep, then you will be surprised with this post. My moms is always like, "Well, did you try Vicks?" I would often forget about the mentholated cream and how it really does work wonders!
The active ingredients are Camphor, Menthol and Eucalyptus oil.
Do not use in children under 2. There is a more gentler formula for babies that contains only aloe vera with fragrance of eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary (for ages 3months and up).**Also, do not rub under children's noses** Was a studying done on ferrets that suggests not doing it.
Not only has it been around for over 100 hundred years, it is the most used over the counter decongestants.
BUT, that's not all!! Here are some other uses:
Feet Uses:
2- Fungus toes can be helped if you rub on a little bit after getting out of the shower. It penetrates and kills the bacteria in less then 2 weeks!! (my mom tried and said it worked for her)
3- If you get dry, cracked feet, try rubbing Vicks on in the morning and night until it soften ups.
4- Have Athletes foot? Rub the minty rub on they dry, crusty spots twice a day.
For the SKIN:
2- Dab onto a zit to help your acne to subside and be less red.
3- Rosacea getting you down? Lightly rub Vicks onto red areas at night, just make sure not to get into your eyes.
4- Feel a cold sore coming on? Rub a dab onto suspected area.
For the BODY:
2- Sinus Headache? Without getting it into eyes, rub onto cheek bones and forehead.
3- Got a itchy bug bite? Just a dab with do ya!
4- Itchy Skin in general? Dry elbows? Use the CREAM!!
5- Dealing with something really smelly? Apply some under the nose to mask the smell.
6- Camping or in an area with Mosquito's or Ticks? Rub some Vicks on exposed areas to keep those pesky bugs away. Already gotten bitten by the Mosquito? Rub some on the bite to relieve itch.
7- Tennis Elbow? Rub some on and wrap it up.
