Their smiles, their adorable little outfits, their delicious cookies, their pledge to “be ready to help out wherever they are needed”—what’s not to love about Girl Scouts? For the 200 million boxes of cookies they bring right to our doors every year alone, they deserve their own holiday. Not to mention all of the other good they have done!
Girl Scouts came into existence in 1912, when a woman named Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low organized the first ever Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Georgia, with just 18 girls from the surrounding area. Low had spend considerable time thinking about what could be done to help young women get outdoors and become more independent, self-reliant and resourceful so they could become better citizens in the future. From the very beginning, the Girl Scouts have been an organization run by women, for women, and over a hundred years after its creation, it has grown to 3.7 million members worldwide. It has been estimated that, since its inception, 50 million girls and women have been members of the organization. Membership is organized by age, and there are different activities available at each level, all suited to the individual needs of each age group. The Girl Scouts is an organization for American girls and American girls living abroad, traditionally ages 5 to 18. Girl Scouts typically meet in groups called a troop, with the troops being run by volunteers, who are often parents of troop members. This makes the Girl Scouts a very close-knit organization.
Girl Scout Day is celebrated on the date that Low organized the first Girl Scout meeting, on March 12th.

The "fireside chats" were a series of informal radio speeches delivered by president Roosevelt beginning in 1933, when the US was in the midst of the Great Depression and a third of Americans were unemployed. With his calm manner and simple way of explaining issues, Roosevelt discussed such issues as the banking crisis, the New Deal program, and the drought. During WWII, he reported on the progress of the war and discussed national defense.

During his career, his innovations were considered both scandalous and revolutionary. He had a romantic relationship with his mentor, Sergey Diaghilev, who dismissed him from the Ballets Russes when he married a Hungarian countess. A few years later, acute schizophrenia ended his career.

The story of Purim comes from the Biblical book of Esther.  In it, Haman a  high ranking advisor to King Ahasuerus sought to kill all Jews in ancient Persia.  He is motivated by an incident in which Mordechai, a Jewish leader, defied the king's orders and refused to bow to Haman.

Haman is stopped through the actions of Mordechai and his niece Esther, a beautiful and courageous Jewish woman.  Esther initially disguises her Jewish Identity and eventually becomes Queen.  Through their actions the King becomes aware of Haman's plot and is persuaded to have him hanged.

2. Daylight Saving Time Begins
Image result for Daylight Saving Time gif
History
Daylight Savings time had begun in an effort to help save energy and provide workers with more hours of serviceable daylight during the long summer days.  Daylight Savings Time was first introduced in the U.S. in 1918.  However, it was not until 1966, when the Uniform Act was passed, that all states had to either observe DST or pass a state law to abstain.

Facts

  • In 2017 Daylight Savings Time began Sunday March 12, 2017 at 2:00 a.m. local time.  Clocks shifted forward 1 hour, making the local time 3:00 a.m. It ends on  November 5, 2017 at 2 a.m., when the time will reverse 1 hour back and will make the local time 1 a.m.
  • When Daylight Savings Time (DST) begins in the Northern Hemisphere, it is ending in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea of DST in 1784.  He wrote An Economical Project for the Journal of Paris, wherein he discussed the cost of oil for lamps as well as working while it was dark, and sleeping while it was day.
  • Daylight Savings Time changes at 2:00 a.m.  This time is selected in an effort to provide the least amount of inconvenience to businesses and citizens.
  • DST always begins on the second Sunday in March, and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Chapel of the Gate of Dawn
The Chapel of the Gate of Dawn is a Catholic chapel and pilgrimage site on the city gates of the Lithuanian city of Vilnius. It is home to Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Northern Renaissance style. In this image, the painting is covered in expensive and elaborate silver and gold clothes, leaving only the face and hands visible.
Legend tells that in 1702, when Vilnius was captured by the Swedish army during the Great Northern WarOur Lady of the Gate of Dawn rescued the city: at dawn, the heavy iron city gates of the gate fell, killing four Swedish soldiers and promoting a successful Lithuanian counter-attack near the gate.

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart.

Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out.

Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - loves to browse & leaves me with endless time to fulfill.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter
from the local Wal-Mart

Dear Mrs. Anderson:

Over the past six months, your husband Jim has caused quite a commotion, in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store.

Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Anderson, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice,
'Code 3 in House wares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time; and costing the company money. We don't have a Code 3.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a, 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called.

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while, loudly humming the, 'Mission Impossible' theme.               After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his, 'Madonna Look' using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!'
14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed;
'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'

15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where is the fitting room?
And last, but not least:
16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile; then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.
