World Asthma Day May 3, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate World Asthma Day

World Asthma Day is an initiative begun in 1998 by the Global Initiative for Asthma, which is an organisation that sets medical guidelines for the control of the disease. A theme is selected annually that raises awareness of the causes and effects of this bronchial condition, which affects approximately 235 million people worldwide.
Organised by healthcare workers in over 35 countries, World Asthma Day focuses on educating the public on what research has found to be the most effective ways of controlling and treating asthma. Past themes have included, ‘Reduce the Burden of Asthma.’ It is hoped that through education the number of sufferers will drop significantly.
Based on the current theme, GINA provides educational material that is distributed at the many and varied events held to raise awareness. These include sporting events, but future themes could possibly focus on environmental issues affecting sufferers, or demystifying medical research into asthma.

History

Nellie Tayloe Ross Becomes First Woman to Head US Mint (1933)


In 1925, following the death of her governor husband, Ross was elected to serve out the remainder of his term, becoming the US's first female governor. She remained politically active after her gubernatorial term and was appointed director of the US Bureau of the Mint in 1933—becoming the first woman to hold that office as well. In her 20 years as director, she saw the Mint through the economic throes of the Great Depression and through WWII.

Hakata Dontaku


The largest festival in Japan, Hakata Dontaku is held in Fukuoka City during Golden Week, the first week in May. The festival originated in the Muromachi Period (1333-1568) as a procession of the merchants of Hakata, an old section of Fukuoka City, paying their new year visit to the daimyo, or feudal lord. The festival highlight is a three-hour parade with legendary gods on horseback, floats, and musicians playing samisens (a three-stringed instrument similar to a guitar), flutes, and drums.

Sadko
Sadko is a character in the Russian medieval epic Bylina. An adventurer, merchant and gusli musician from Novgorod, Sadko becomes wealthy with the help of the Sea Tsar, but is thrown in the sea when he fails to pay the Sea Tsar his due respects. This story was widely adapted in the 19th century, including in a poem by Alexei Tolstoy and an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

DIY Non-Toxic Mosquito Repellent
With all the recent floods,  mosquitoes are on the rise. I myself have a strictly “hate” relationship with the pesky little things (they have anger issues)  If you want to make your very own mosquito repellent that is non toxic try the following.
* 10-25 drops (total) of essential oils
* 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil  ( almond, apricot kernel, olive, sunflower or any other cooking oil ) or alcohol ( such as high quality vodka )
any mixture of the following essential oils: basil, catnip, cedarwood, citronella, juniper, lemon, lemongrass, myrrh, palmarosa, pine, rose geranium, rosemary & cinnamon will repel mosquitoes.
Be sure to shake well before each use .
Check your DIY mosquito repellent on a small area to check for allergic reactions before using it over large areas of your body.
Some essential oils may have disagreeable odors, especially when mixed together, so consider adding peppermint oil to your repellent to cover any unpleasant fragrances.
You’ll need to re-apply the natural product after about an hour or after swimming or exercise. Unused natural insect repellent may be stored  in a dark glass bottle  away from heat or sunlight.

Why Do We Quit "Cold Turkey"?

Explaining A Common Phrase

    Ever quit something cold turkey and wonder why you've quit it in such a manner? On the serious side, the phrase is often used when the quitting brings physical symptoms of withdrawal, as with heroin or other highly addictive drugs. However, it can also be used more lightheartedly, as in this recent Business Insider headline: "I was addicted to dating apps, so I quit cold turkey." But where the heck did it come from? Carleton Simon ... are those who voluntarily surrender themselves. When they go before him, that are given what is called the 'cold turkey' treatment."
    The expression first appeared in the Daily Colonist in British Columbia in 1921: "Perhaps the most pitiful figures who have appeared before Dr. Carleton Simon ... are those who voluntarily surrender themselves. When they go before him, that are given what is called the 'cold turkey' treatment."

    But why turkey, and why cold? The most popular theory was repeated by the San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen in 1978: "It derives from the hideous combination of goosepimples [sic] and what William Burroughs calls 'the cold burn' that addicts suffer as they kick the habit." In Cop Speak: The Lingo of Law Enforcement and Crime, Tom Philbin recites a second theory, that "the term may derive from the cold, clammy feel of the skin during withdrawal, like a turkey that has been refrigerated."
    The problem with both of these theories is that they ignore the uses of cold turkey before its application to drug addiction. In a cartoon that appeared in newspapers on November 12, 1920, ace slangman Thomas "TAD" Dorgan used cold turkey this way – "Now tell me on the square – can I get by with this for the wedding – don't string me – tell me cold turkey." The editors of the Historical Dictionary of American Slang have found an earlier use: a 1910 usage where the speaker lost $5,000 cold turkey, in the sense of losing it outright.
    It may be that the original cold turkey was a combination of cold ("straightforward, matter-of-fact") and the earlier talk turkey, which dates back to the early 1800s and refers to speaking plainly. Regardless of its ultimate origins, the phrase manages to vividly capture the initial dread and discomfort that comes from immediately quitting something that's addictive, from drugs to dating apps.
