Junk Food Day JULY 21, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Junk Food Day

Sometimes, the idea of being healthy, preparing a balanced meal, and snacking on carrot sticks isn’t too appealing. Junk Food Day is all about satisfying your cravings for something naughtier, greasier, and definitely more fattening than the nutritional but not-very-exciting meal you know that you really should be eating.

 History

Sirimavo Bandaranaike Becomes World's First Female Prime Minister (1960)

After her husband's assassination in 1959, Bandaranaike became the first woman in the world to serve as a nation's prime minister. She led two coalition governments, from 1960–65 and from 1970–77, and promoted a new constitution that proclaimed a republic and changed the country's name from Ceylon to Sri Lanka. She was later stripped of her civil rights because of abuses as prime minister but reentered politics in the late 1980s

Don Knotts (1924)

Knotts was an American comedic actor best known for his portrayal of the bumbling but earnest sheriff's deputy Barney Fife on the 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. When the show first aired, Griffith—as Sheriff Andy Taylor—was to be the comedic lead, and Knotts was to play his straight man, but Knotts's Fife proved so funny that this was soon reversed. The role earned Knotts 5 Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy.

Swan Upping

The tradition of marking newborn swans goes back six centuries, when most of the swans on England's public waters were owned by the Queen. Every year since 1363, the Queen's swan master and the swan wardens of the two livery companies row up the Thames, starting at Blackfriars and continuing upstream to Abingdon, and "up" all the swan families into the boats, where they are marked with identification numbers. There are very specific rules governing how ownership is decided, and the six boats, each flying a large silk flag, form a procession that has changed little over the centuries.

CROCKPOT RECIPE

CrockPot Crab with Sundried Tomatoes and Horseradish Spread

I was playing in the kitchen yesterday and came up with this crab spread. I couldn't decide if I liked it or not---even after I ate two rice cakes smeared with the stuff. Adam thought it was too fussy.

The Ingredients.

--1 4.25 oz can of crab meat, drained
--2 T prepared horseradish cream
--5 reconstituted sun dried tomato halves
--1/4 cup parmesan/romano cheese
--3 fresh basil leaves

The Directions.

Soak the dried sun dried tomatoes in some hot water until they are soft and pliable. Chop. You could use the sun dried tomatoes packed in oil, but be sure to wring out the oil, or your pate will be awfully oily.

Drain the can of crab and add it to the little crockpot. Add the chopped sun dried tomatoes, the horseradish, chopped fresh basil leaves, and the cheese.

Mix with a fork.

Cover and cook (there isn't a temperature adjustment knob on the Little Dipper) for about an hour.

Serve with pita chips, corn chips, or on rice cakes.

The Verdict.

This was good, but maybe a bit too flavorful. I like horseradish, but maybe mixed with both the crab and the sun dried tomatoes was too much. It didn't stop me from eating a bunch, but it might have been better with fewer full-of-flavor ingredients. The kids had no interest, whatsoever, in giving this dip/spread a try.

Simply hot glue the two books together, mark where you want your hole and using a 3" drill bit -- drill away!  Do take it slow and easy.  I used an empty sour cream container to pot my little plants  after I slipped it in the hole, marked it, and cut it off to fit.

  1. Smiling with Calvin and Hobbes? OK. But no junk food--just blueberries and strawberries and peaches for today. January days--perhaps then junk.
