Mollyockett was a Pequawket Indian who lived among the early settlers of western Maine. Born between 1730 and 1740, she lived in the area now known as Bethel after 1770. She was known as an "Indian doctress" who treated the white settlers of New England as well. The local festival known as Mollyockett Day in Bethel, Maine, started out in the 1950s as a fundraising event. The name was changed in honor of the Indian woman whose generosity and self-reliance have become legendary. The festival includes a parade, foot races, rubber ducky race, and Maine lobsters. |

What makes a bloodcurdling scream so, well, bloodcurdling? A new study says the answer lies not in the volume but the frequency range -- one that's shared by the shrill alarm sounds that startle people in everyday life. |

While you are very companionable and thrive in a partnership, you are also highly independent in nature, freedom-loving, and success-oriented. You are sentimental and in some ways surprisingly traditional, but your thinking is progressive. You can be known for your powerful mind, and also for your quirks! You are very loyal by nature, particularly in close relationships, but you still very much need for a relationship to grow and evolve. Vertigo is a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Tom Helmore. Based on the 1954 novel D'entre les morts by Boileau-Narcejac, the film follows a former police detective who struggles against hisacrophobia (an extreme fear of heights), which causes vertigo (a false sensation of rotation), to follow an acquaintance's wife. Although it received mixed reviews upon release, Vertigo has since been considered one of Hitchcock's best works.

Warring Weather
Photograph by Paul Brooks, National Geographic
While trying to provide storm coverage for local affiliates, Iowa storm chaser Paul Brooks followed a cell from Albia to Mount Pleasant at sunset. He captured this scene just east of Mount Pleasant—lightning to the south and a well-defined rainbow to the east—by stacking seven separate shots on top of each other, forming a composite image of the weather events. “Truly a perfect alignment of the elements,” he writes.

CrockPot Cowboy Stew Recipe
This stew is hearty and has a nice kick to it; real comfort food.
There are two ingredients pictures because I got a bit overwhelmed answering and reading email yesterday and forgot to put some stuff in there at first.
The Ingredients.
--1 pound browned hamburger (can use turkey)
--2 cloves chopped garlic
--1 can tomato sauce
--1 can diced Italian seasoned tomatoes
--1 can corn, drained
--2 cans whole baby potatoes, drained (unless you can find a great big can of potatoes)
--1 can tomatoes with green chilies
--1 can Ranch Style beans (with the baked beans in the grocery store) (or see recipe below)
--1 cup water
--sliced jalapeno peppers for garnish (optional)
The Directions.
This makes a lot. Make sure that your crockpot is at least 5qts.
Brown the hamburger with the chopped garlic cloves on the stove top. Drain the fat. Let sit in the pan for a bit to cool.
Open all of you cans, and dump them into the crockpot. Drain the corn and the potatoes, but add the rest of the can liquid to the crockpot.
After adding all of the can contents, add the browned meat and a cup of water. Stir with a spoon to mix a bit.
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5. Soup and stew tastes better the longer you cook it, so opt for the longer cooking time if you can.
Garnish with sliced jalapeno peppers, if desired.
Can't Find Ranch Beans at your grocery store? No Problem!!
simply mix together:
1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans (plus the goop!)
simply mix together:
1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans (plus the goop!)
1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vinegar (white or apple cider)
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cumin
The Verdict.
I had never before bought canned potatoes, or the Ranch Beans, which intrigued me about this recipe. If you use "real" potatoes they will disintegrate in the crockpot. These stayed perfectly oval in shape, and looked like baby dinosaur eggs. I really liked the flavor of this stew. The kids picked out what they wanted, and didn't complain. They really liked the beans, and thought the floating potatoes were cool. We will have this for lunch for quite a few days. Adam and I both wanted a sliced jalapeno in each bite---they gave a really nice tangy spice to the meal.

Japanese Artist Carves Faces in Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Cups
By Sumitra
Parents are forever telling kids not to play with food, but Japanese artist Makoto Asano does just that. He carves smiling faces into tubs of Häagen-Dazs ice cream, using nothing but the flimsy plastic spoon they come with.
Asano’s ice cream faces may look childish to some people, but there’s a certain whimsical quality about them that makes them stand out. Each face is carved out of a different flavor of ice cream, with sauces and toppings forming features such as hair, mustaches, or beards.

Unusual Bird Nests Built In The Oddest Of Places
earth porm
Birds are capable of adapting to so many different environments; no matter what they have to work with they make it happen. Not all birds nest, but all birds need a safe secure place to lay and hatch their eggs.
Scientists have found that birds can improve their nest making skills with time, meaning the older and wiser birds are more likely to have a cool nest. Savvy nest building skills are a must considering agriculture and urbanization robs birds of much of their natural nesting habitats.
Man-made birdhouses were first invented around the 15th or 16th century, they have risen in popularity as a way to help birds find a home when the picking is slim. Humans originally instituted some of the nests on this list, but most are all the work of birds. These unusual bird nests show just how clever birds are when it comes to building a home.
Our big pooch plays with a soccer ball in exactly the same way as that steer is doing! And she resembles the pooch in the chair surrounded by kittens. The nests are the best.
