“The Duchess” Who Wasn’t Day celebrates the life of Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, an irish novelist who was always published under the pen name “The Duchess” in the United States – also the name of her most popular novel, published in 1887. Margaret is responsible for the popular phrase “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, in her book Molly Bawn, so try and slip it into conversation!
In total, The Duchess had at least 57 works attributed to her name but could have written many, many more as a lot of her early work was published as Anonymous, and later as Mrs Hungerford, before “The Duchess” became popular in the States. She also wrote many newspaper articles and had a large family – four daughters and two sons.
Born on the 27th April 1855 in County Cork, she won prizes in school for writing stories. After the death of her first husband in 1876 The Duchess took to writing more seriously to support her three daughters, and it was shortly after this that her first book “Phyllis” was written, and a little later on “Molly Bawn”.
She remarried in 1882, had two sons and a daughter with her second husband and eventually died of typhoid fever in 1897.

Mars Makes Its Closest Approach to Earth in Nearly 60,000 Years (2003)
In its most favorable position for viewing, when it is opposite the Sun, Mars is twice as bright as the brightest star in the sky. The Red Planet was even more visible in 2003, when it made its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years, passing within 35 million mi (56 million km) of us. An email sent during the 2003 approach has spawned hoax emails saying that during an upcoming approach Mars will appear as big as the Moon.
Theodore Dreiser (1871)
Dreiser was a novelist and pioneer of naturalism in American literature. After working as a journalist, magazine editor, and publisher, he published his first novel, Sister Carrie, which was denounced as scandalous. In 1915, the withdrawal of his autobiographical novel, The Genius, from distribution on moral grounds ignited a national anti-censorship campaign supported by most of the leading literary figures of the day.
Stiftungsfest
Appropriately enough, Minnesota's oldest continuous festival is held in the town of Norwood-Young America. Loosely translated as "founders' day," Stiftungsfest was created in 1861 by the Young America Pioneer Maennerchor (men's choir) as a way of bringing the music of old Germany to the new world. Well-known bands and singing groups from Germany as well as local groups perform during the three-day event, which includes a traditional German beer garden, a Heritage Tent showcasing German arts and crafts, and a Grand Parade.

Quaker guns in former Confederate fortifications at Manassas Junction, Virginia, in March 1862. Quaker guns were widely used as a deception tactic in warfare during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although resembling an actual cannon, the Quaker gun was simply a wooden log, usually painted black. The name derives from the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, who have traditionally held a religious opposition to war and violence in the Peace Testimony.

thanks, virg"THE BEST DEAR JOHN LETTER EVER"A young girl on a year’s training course in South Africa, recently received a "Dear John" letter from her boyfriend back home. It read as follows:
Dear Mary,I can no longer continue our relationship. The distance between us is just too great. I must admit that I have cheated on you twice, since you’ve been gone, and it's not fair to either of us. I'm sorry. Please return the picture of me that I sent to you.Love, JohnMary, with hurt feelings, asked her colleagues for any snapshots they could spare of their boyfriends, brothers, ex-boyfriends, uncles, cousins, etc. In addition to the picture of John, Mary included all the other pictures of the pretty lads she had collected from her buddies. There were 57 photos in that envelope, along with this note:Dear John,I'm so sorry, but I can't remember who the hell you are. Please take your picture from the pile, and send the rest back to me.Take care, Mary

CHILDREN'S QUESTIONS!
For all beautiful mums.
I was out walking with my 4.5-year-old son. He picked up something off
of the ground and started to put it in his mouth. I took the item away from
him and I asked him not to do that. 'Why?' my son asked.
'Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's
dirty and probably has germs,' I replied.
At this point, my son looked at me with total admiration and asked,
'Mum, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart.'
I was thinking quickly and replied, 'All mums know this stuff. It's on the
Mum Test. You have to know it or they don't let you be a Mum.'
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but he was evidently
pondering this new information. 'Oh....I get it'! he beamed. 'So if you
don't pass the test you have to be the dad.'
'Exactly,' I replied with a big smile on my face.
