Wont You Be My Neighbor Day March 20, 2018

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Wont You Be My Neighbor Day
Image result for Wont You Be My Neighbor Day
Any day can be a beautiful day in the neighborhood – and Won’t you Be My Neighbor Day, is no exception!
Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day is a day to remember and honor Fred Rogers, that iconic children’s TV presenter of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. His show reached it’s heyday in popularity back in the 1970’s and 80’s, and repeats can still be seen today. Gentle, soft-spoken Mr. Rogers was a mainstay for preschoolers and their parents; teaching them that respect of those around you and a good attitude were just as important as learning your colors and letters.
Why not don a 70’s style sweater today, and speak softly to your partner? Be mindful of how you can show kindness and patience in explaining a simple concept to a child (or perhaps even to a work colleague!) After all, it’s a beautiful day for a neighbor – and for being neighborly!

Though it was originally developed as an anticancer drug in 1964, azidothymidine (AZT) was never approved for that purpose. Two decades later, however, it was discovered to be effective in fighting HIV. At the time, thousands of people were dying of AIDS, and no other treatment was forthcoming. For humanitarian reasons, the drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in a matter of months, rather than the usual eight to 10 years.

The first day of spring (nowruz means "new day") is celebrated by all religious groups in Iran and Afghanistan. In Iran, Nowruz is an event lasting 13 days, during which people wear new clothes, give gifts, and visit friends and relatives. Banquet tables traditionally hold seven foods starting with the letter S. Plates with sprouting wheat symbolize fertility, as do eggs, which are colored. Other symbols are a mirror, candlesticks, and a bowl of water with a green leaf in it. The 13th day after Nawruz is Sizdah-Bedar, and everyone picnics in the country or on rugs in city parks.

CROCKPOT RECIPE
BLUEBERRY COBBLER
Cobblers are a great way to enjoy the taste of sweet summer berries in any season. Juicy bubbly berries topped with a tender, flaky crust make this classic dessert a crowd pleaser. This quick and easy version comes together in 5 minutes and requires only 7 ingredients.
Using pre-made biscuit dough creates a perfect, butter topping for juicy berries. You can use fresh or frozen berries for this recipe, but if you use frozen, allow them to thaw before cooking. The cinnamon and vanilla enhance the berries natural sweetness.

2 HOURS, 5 MINUTES

1 tablespoon (14 g) butter
4 cups (400 g) blueberries
1 cup, plus 2 tablespoons (230 g) sugar
3 tablespoons (24 g) cornstarch
2 teaspoons (5 g) cinnamon
1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
1 tube (1 lb., 450 g) premade biscuit dough

Use butter to grease the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker.
Add blueberries, 1 cup of sugar, cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and vanilla to slow cooker and stir to combine.
Separate out the biscuits and cut into 1 or 2 chunks. Layer evenly over top of berries. Mix together remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon and sprinkle over top.
Place 3-4 paper towels over top of slow cooker to absorb moisture, then cover with lid. Cook on high for 2 hours. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.
Pro tip: For a crisper crust, spread 1 tablespoon of melted butter over top of biscuit layer before adding cinnamon sugar.
