DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Pumpkin Day
There’s one thing that represents October more than anything else, and it’s not Halloween (though it’s involved). That thing? The pumpkin. It starts appearing on shelves and farmers market’s stands on the last week or two of September, and is the herald that lets you know that Pumpkin Pies, Jack-o-Lanterns, and all the joys of fall are just around the corner. Pumpkin Day celebrates these noble squash’s, and the history and tradition tied up in their iconic orangeness.
History of Pumpkin Day
Often when people think of Halloween, they think of Jack-o-Lanterns and pumpkins, and even when you’re looking at that ‘false medieval’ imagery that’s present in most fantasy games, you’ll regularly see pumpkins being present, especially during Halloween events. What many people don’t know is that the pumpkin is actually a plant from the new world, like all squash, so the image of pumpkin jack-o-lanterns in front of ancient medieval homes is just plain wrong. These are an all American (And South American) plant, and the jack-o-lantern at Halloween is a distinctly New World thing.
So let’s learn a little bit about the Pumpkin in honor of Pumpkin Day, starting with what the word pumpkin means. It’s pretty simple, as it comes from the Greek word pepon, or ‘Large Melon’, but it didn’t go straight to pumpkin. First it was pompon to the French, and then pumpion to the British. It was the Americans that finally changed the word to its present Pumpkin, and so it’s been ever since! Pumpkin Day is a great opportunity to add this delicious squash to your diet, whether in the form of a traditional pumpkin pie, or a rich and savory pumpkin soup.

President of South Korea Assassinated by His Chief of Intelligence (1979)
Park rose through the ranks of the South Korean army and was a member of the military junta that overthrew the civilian government in 1961. Two years later, he was elected president of South Korea. Although his government aided economic progress through export-oriented growth, Park became increasingly dictatorial and was assassinated by his chief of intelligence in 1979—the last of several assassination attempts against him.

The book had only modest success at first and soon went out of print, but it was rediscovered and reissued in 1983 and is now considered one of the best adventure books ever written. |
Angam Day
Nauru is an island in the Pacific, about 2,200 miles northeast of Sydney, Australia, and 2,400 miles southwest of Honolulu. Over the past 100 years, the existence of Nauruans has been threatened a number of times—by tribal disputes in the 1870s, and by an influenza epidemic in 1919. During World War II, two-thirds were deported by the Japanese to the Caroline Islands to build airstrips. Angam Day (angam means "hope") on October 26 commemorates the various occasions when the Nauruan population has reached 1,500, considered the minimum number necessary for survival.

The A591 is a major road in the English county of Cumbria, which lies almost entirely within the Lake District national park. The road starts at a roundabout with the A590 close to Sizergh Castle and runs generally north west, bypassing the towns of Kendal and Keswick, ending on the A595 near Bothel. A 2009 poll by satellite navigation firm Garmin named the stretch of the road between Windermere and Keswick as the most popular road in Britain. The A591 was badly damaged during Storm Desmond in 2015, with part of the road washed away at Dunmail Raise, and had to be closed for five months. While it was closed a new trail for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders was built to the west of the road.

Would You Dress Your Dog in a Halloween Costume?
thecut
“Pirate Girl” pet costume.
Woof!
Halloween costumes for dogs are a controversial subject. Some think they are great enough to warrant an entire parade, while others believe they should be outlawed for good. But when you think about it, how often in a dog’s life does it get to be sexy, let alone a sexy pirate? Maybe it just wants to look cute. And honestly, we should be paying more dogs to be influencers. Just saying.
If you’re considering dressing your dog for Halloween this year, below are some of our favorite costumes.
