Celebrate Conflict Resolution Day
Conflict Resolution Day is a global event, intended to promote the concept of peaceful conflict resolution. Created in 2005 by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), it is now an annual celebration.
Primarily an educational event, the main purpose of Conflict Resolution Day is to increase awareness of the various peaceful, non-violent methods of conflict resolution available, such as mediation and arbitration. In addition, the ACR hopes to promote their use in various different avenues of life, including in schools, workplaces, within the legal system and even among families.
The Association for Conflict Resolution, alongside various independent organizations, host informative events all over the world, so check the event listings in your local area and see if you can attend one.
Girl with a Pearl Earring
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime but evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings.

Women in Canada Finally Recognized as "Persons" (1929)
In the early 20th century, Canadian women were often prohibited from hearing court testimony deemed inappropriate. Emily Murphy protested and became the first woman magistrate in Canada—and all of the British Empire—but her rulings were often challenged because women were not legally considered "persons." Murphy and four other women, the "Famous Five," submitted a petition for constitutional clarification. The subsequent Persons Case granted Canadian women personhood.Pierre Trudeau (1919)
Azerbaijan Independence DaysAzerbaijan observes two independence days. The May 28, 1918, establishment of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan provides the occasion for the older independence celebration. Two years later, Azerbaijan came under Soviet rule. Azerbaijan's new independence day commemorates the declaration of independence made by the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan on October 18, 1991. After the U.S.S.R. ceased to exist as a geopolitical entity in December 1991, Azerbaijan became an official independent state on December 26, 1991. How Mushrooms Might Save the Bees

If You Were Born Today, October 18
You are a very fair person who is also determined and hard-working. Success usually doesn't come at a young age, but it does after some early setbacks--and from your own doing. You are a leader and a visionary. You have your feet on the ground, but you are willing to look beyond what is right in front of you. You may have some troubles with people who deceive you. Although you possess an unusually strong ability to understand human nature, when you are personally involved, you tend to believe what you want to believe. Your intellect is sharp. When an important decision has to be made, you listen to others, process the information, and then follow your intuition. Famous people born today:

Pictures of the day
Study of a Young Woman is a painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, completed between 1665 and 1667, around the same time as his better-known Girl with a Pearl Earring. The two paintings are similar in tone, composition, and size. Both subjects wear pearl earrings, have scarves draped over their shoulders, and are shown in front of a plain black background. It is likely that the creation of both works involved the use of a camera obscura. The sitter is depicted as having a widely spaced features in a flat face, with a small nose and thin lips. Her lack of conventional beauty has led to a general belief that this work was painted on commission, although it is possible that the model was Vermeer's daughter. The work was probably created as a tronierather than a portrait, being a study of the young woman's thoughts, feelings, or character, something typical in many of Vermeer's paintings. Study of a Young Woman is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
