National Nut Day History

National Nut Day is a public observance in celebration of all the good things about nuts. Nuts are fruits composed of a hard outer shell with a seed inside.  They are high in fat, protein and vitamins and minerals. Although not all of the nuts that we consume today are "true" nuts, they are all celebrated on National Nut Day. It is observed on October 22nd each year.

New York City's Metropolitan Opera House is the leading US opera company. It opened in 1883 after having been founded by a group of millionaires who had failed to get boxes at the prestigious and exclusive Academy of Music. The "Met" soon outshines its rival and is now considered one of the world's premier opera stages. Originally located at Broadway and 39th Street, it moved into the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1966.

The illegitimate child of a courtesan, Bernhardt was encouraged to pursue a theatrical career by one of her mother's lovers. Her acting teachers did not consider her a particularly promising student, but they turned out to be sorely mistaken; Bernhardt went on to become the premier romantic and tragic actress of her day, touring all over the world during her six-decade career on stage and screen.

Jidai Matsuri

Jidai Matsuri is one of the three great festivals of Kyoto, Japan, commemorating the founding of the city as capital in the year 794. A procession of more than 2,000 costumed people depict the epochs or ages in Kyoto's history. They parade from the Imperial Palace to the Heian Shrine, which was built in the 18th century as a dedication to the emperors who established Kyoto as the capital. The capital was moved in 1868 to Tokyo, and the festival stems from that time. Among the paraders is one representing Gen. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a patron of the arts under whom Kyoto flourished.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, October 22
Although you are personally magnetic, you have a manner that is slightly intimidating to others, making you a little hard to get close to. You give off the subtle impression that perhaps you don't really need new people in your life. You do, although you tend to be somewhat selective when it comes to your social life, simply because your work is extremely important to you and you value your time. There is a no-nonsense directness about you that inspires trust in others, however. You give the impression of solidity, strength of character, dependability, and honesty. Although you are an idealist and visionary, you still manage to keep your feet on the ground. You don't seem capable of doing things halfway, and that includes your relationships! You are quite focused on achieving in life. Famous people born today:

The goal of the four-to-eight-page weekly paper, which was distributed via the classroom, was to bring awareness to children of what was happening in the world, so that one day they might become daily newspaper readers. The weekly was distributed on Friday afternoons, and must have offered a welcome relief to teachers who were ready for something to fill the final afternoon before the weekend. The first issue, published September 21, 1928. The idea of creating a newspaper for children has been largely attributed to
Eleanor M. Johnson, who had been an educator in York, PA. before taking over as long-time editor in 1934.

In 2007, Weekly Reader Corporation became part of The Readers Digest Association. That company tried to create a viable online version but was unsuccessful. In February of 2012, Weekly Reader was acquired by its competitor, Scholastic. The publications have joined forces and are now
re-branded as Scholastic News/Weekly Reader.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) is a national park located in Maranhão state, in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José. Protected since June 1981, the 383,000-acre (155,000 ha) park includes 70 km (43 mi) of coastline, and an interior of rolling sand dunes. During the rainy season, the valleys among the dunes fill with freshwater lagoons, prevented from draining due to the impermeable rock beneath. The park is home to a range of species, including four listed as endangered, and has become a popular destination for ecotourists.

SOCKS AS HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

Inline image
Plain white socks make perfect ghosts. You can stuff them (just the toe of the sock) with Kleenex, tissue paper, newspaper or other fabric scraps. Use a rubber band or string to tie it shut so your stuffing doesn’t fall out. Grab a permanent fabric marker and draw your ghostly face on it. Use fishing line to hang them so it gives the illusion that they are just floating there. These make perfect porch decorations.
