Arbor Day - April 28, 2023

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Arbor Day

Trees are a glorious part of the planet that make the world a much better place! A vital part of the ecosystem, National Arbor Day is here to celebrate the amazing beauty and usefulness of trees.

History of National Arbor Day

Typically celebrated on the last Friday in April in the United States, National Arbor Day has origins that date back to the late 19th century. The day got its start in the American state of Nebraska when a journalist named Julius Sterling Morton proposed that his fellow Nebraskans would plant trees to show appreciation for nature and the environment. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 and the idea grew from there.

In particular, schools across the US began celebrating Arbor Day, taking the opportunity to teach kids about the importance of planting trees. Arbor Day became an official state holiday in Nebraska in 1885 and then 1883 brought the celebration to Japan, Europe and other places around the world.

By 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the day by issuing the “Arbor Day Proclamation to the School Children of the United States”. Even so, it wasn’t actually until the year 1970 that Arbor Day became a day that was recognized officially throughout the nation, when President Richard Nixon recognized it along with other environmentally friendly movements.

Today, National Arbor Day continues to be an important part of the conservation efforts and the work to help promote the health of the environment.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Fake oil paintings can be detected because nuclear bombs detonated in 1945 contained isotopes (now found in oil) that did not previously exist in nature. If a painting contains those isotopes, they were painted after 1945.

Bad ventilation in your bedroom at night can result in increased carbon dioxide and is associated with poor sleep, headaches, and a decline in cognitive performance the next day.

In 1951, Thelma Howard was hired as a maid for Walt and Lillian Disney. Walt gave her shares of Disney stock every Christmas for 30 years. Upon her passing in 1994, it was discovered she had all 192,000 shares, valued at $9 million. It all went to her disadvantaged kids.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The monsoon of South Asia is one of the world's monsoons, affecting the Indian subcontinent. Because of its effect on agriculture, on flora and fauna, and on the climates of nations including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the monsoon is one of the most anticipated, tracked and studied weather phenomena in the region. The southwest monsoon generally starts on the western coast of India at the beginning of June, and runs through to the beginning of October. Its cause is only partly understood and it is notoriously difficult to predict, with several theories proposed to explain its origin and process. These two panoramic photographs, taken three months apart in 2010 from the same location, show a view of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, India, during the dry season in late May (top) and during the peak of the South Asian monsoon in late August (bottom).
