Int'l Mother Language Day FEBRUARY 21, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Int'l Mother Language Day

Announced by UNESCO in 1999, International Mother Language Day celebrates cultural diversity and commemorates the “language martyr” students of 1952 Bangladesh. These students are honored by the encouragement of multiculturalism and the promotion of protective measures for endangered languages. It’s hard to imagine the challenges faced by students who have been ordered to learn in a foreign language, as without linguistic inclusion, there is no equal access to education. Current International Mother Language Day events include multicultural festivals which promote the hearing of all voices, and display social cohesion, cultural awareness, and tolerance. The unique nuances and subtleties of linguistic communication which connect individuals to culture and personal identity are valued and encouraged.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

History

Andrés Segovia (1893)

Segovia was a Spanish guitarist whose transcriptions of early contrapuntal music, along with his concerts and recordings, were largely responsible for the 20th-century resurgence of interest in the guitar and its possibilities as a concert instrument. Almost entirely self-taught, he made his debut in Grenada in 1909 and by the 1920s was touring internationally. He continued to perform into his 90s.

Feralia

This ancient Roman festival marked the culmination of a week-long celebration in honor of the manes, spirits of the dead. It began on February 13 with the Parentalia, a private celebration in honor of deceased family members, and ended on February 21 with a public celebration known as the Feralia. This was the day on which offerings and gifts were placed on the graves of the deceased and the anniversary of the funeral feast was celebrated. The Feralia was similar to the later Christian holiday, All Souls' Day

Americans Are Sleep Deprived. Could Getting Married Help?

It doesn't take a government study to tell many Americans what they already know: They're not getting enough sleep. But the latest study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- which shows that 35 percent of U.S. adults don't get the recommended seven hours or more a night.

Yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) are usually dormant during the day, but Christine Sandberg caught these two apparent lovebirds in action one afternoon in a park in Pinellas County, Florida. “I noticed something different in their movements and behavior this day. I slowly approached them, they slowly approached each other up in the foliage,” Sandberg writes. “Suddenly—a touch from a beak, and the look of love in their eyes.”
