Bet you didn’t know that Hippo loosely translates to River Horse in ancient Greek. Hippo Day, then, celebrates the third largest mammal on Earth. Why not take some time to waddle in a mud bath, get angry with some tourists, and yawn a lot whilst opening your mouth really-really widely?

History

Jeremy Bentham (1748)


Bentham was a British moral philosopher and legal theorist. A precocious student, he graduated from Oxford at age 15. In his writings, he became the earliest expounder of utilitarianism—the theory that the rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by its usefulness in bringing about the greatest happiness for all those affected by it. His work inspired much reform legislation, especially regarding prisons

Susan B. Anthony Day


Susan Brownell Anthony (1820-1906) devoted her life to the temperance, anti-slavery, and women's suffrage movements. After the Civil War, she focused all of her energies on getting women the right to vote, which was achieved in 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Tributes to Anthony take place on her birthday, February 15, in various parts of the country, and ceremonies honoring Anthony are often held at her grave in Rochester, New York. 

Space Station Resupply Mission Delayed After Mold Found in Bags


A cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station has been pushed back after mold was discovered in some of the bags used for packing supplies, NASA said.

A red panda appears to be deep in thought at the Darjeeling Zoo in West Bengal, India, home to a breeding center for the endangered animals. The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) has seen its population reduced by approximately 50 percent over the last two decades. The Darjeeling Zoo’s red panda program, which began in 1994, currently has six males and six females after two of the animals died in 2015.
