Western Monarch Day - February 5, 2021

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Western Monarch Day

Get out your tiara…wait no! It’s not that day. It is Western Monarch Day. It is a day to celebrate the Western Monarch butterfly. It travels from place to place but this day specifically we give thanks for their return to the central California coast. Why is this so important? It is important to watch and make sure that they do return. The monarch butterfly is facing a terrific decline in numbers.

Many conservation groups are calling for it to be protected as an endangered species and claim that the number of declines could be as high as 90%!

History of Western Monarch Day

The Monarch butterfly is a stunning mix of grace and beauty. With rich tones of gold, red, yellow and orange they fly across the landscape and take over the job of pollination. They somehow know when it is time to move. Their migration can be tracked from north and east to south and west, and then back again.

Amazingly each way of the migration takes four generations! Can you imagine? Taking into account how much they pollinate, and the fact that their migration takes such a toll on their population it is imperative to understand what their decline really means. Can you picture the toll when I say the decline of Monarch population is near 90%? Let me share a visual with you. Let’s talk people instead of insects. If we were to make a comparison, the loss to the butterfly would be as if all the people in the United States of America died except for those in Ohio and Florida. Stunning isn’t it?

With that picture in mind, can you now see why there is a Western Monarch Day? A day to bring awareness to this frightening decline? A day to find a way to make a difference!

Joke of the Day

Am I Getting To THAT Age???

When people see a cat's litter box they always say,  "Oh, have you got a cat?"

I just say, "No, it's for company!"

Turkey officials found an ancient Bible believed to be 1,200 years old in a dramatic operation.  The ancient text is in a frail condition, made of leather with gold lettering, and religious symbols and motifs appear on the pages. The Bible is 34 pages long and has a cross and a star of David inside the book. According to a Turkey news station, police recovered the ancient Bible as part of an anti-smuggling operation last year in the city of Kayapınar, hours away from Syria. Police say three suspects were caught while trying to sell it in a shoe store.

FRIDAY'S INTERESTING FACTS

Queen Elizabeth II can’t sit on the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones.

Queen Elizabeth II visited the set of Game of Thrones, but because of an obscure rule, she wasn’t allowed to sit on it – much to the disappointment of all present. It turns out that there’s an old and relatively irrelevant rule which states that the ruling monarch can’t sit on a foreign throne. Despite this throne being a work of fiction, the queen is obviously a stickler for the rules and declined to rest her royal buttocks on the Iron Throne!

The most venomous jellyfish in the world is the Irukandji.

The Irukandji are actually a few different species of box jellyfish, which are commonly found in the waters off Australia’s coast. Despite being the most venomous jellyfish in the world, they’re actually not the most dangerous. The more lethal species of jellyfish are actually also box jellyfish, but are larger and are able to administer their venom much more rapidly. Despite this, the Irukandji is still something that should be avoided at all costs – something which is rather difficult as they’re smaller than your fingernail! Another reason to steer clear of them is because their venom is 100 times more powerful than a cobra’s!

A goat called William Windsor served as a Lance Corporal in the British Army.

William “Billy” Windsor I served in the 1st Battalion Infantry Unit of The Royal Welsh between 2001 and 2009. He was briefly demoted to fusilier after “unacceptable behavior” at the Queen’s Official Birthday celebrations, before regaining his rank as Lance Corporal. Billy was not the first, and will certainly not be the last goat to serve in the Royal Welsh, as the tradition goes back to 1844. Following Billy’s retirement he has since been replaced by a younger goat named William Windsor II.

Some insects and small birds see the world in slow motion.

This is because they are able to take in more information per second than other, larger animals. This allows them to move so rapidly and with such precision, which is vital to escape from predators. They process information so quickly that they perceive time as though it was in slow motion.

The first alarm clock could only ring at 4am.

While alarms, and clocks, have been around for a long time, the combination of the two is a much more recent invention! The man responsible for creating the first mechanical alarm clock, Levi Hutchins, did so as he was determined to wake up before sunrise, no matter what day it was. So it was that in 1787 he created an alarm clock that would chime at 4am. His invention worked perfectly, for him at least. He was so happy, in fact, that he never bothered to patent his device or sell it commercially. It took another 60 years for a wind up alarm clock to be invented that could be set to any time.

Pictures of the Day

The Battle of Normandy (D-Day) is one of the best-known battles of World War II. The invasion force included 4000 landing craft, 130 warships for bombardment and 12,000 aircraft to support the landings. In order to persuade the Germans that the invasion would really be coming to the Pas de Calais, the Allies prepared a massive deception plan, called Operation Fortitude. An entirely fictitious First U.S. Army Group was created, with fake buildings and equipment, and false radio messages were sent.

Question: What can you tell me about the age and value of this baby scale? When did scales such as this start being made for parents to use?

Answer: The Jacobs brothers, who were three immigrants that worked in the butcher-supply trade in New York City, founded the Detecto Scale Company in 1900. The company produced bakers' dough scales, butcher scales, doctor scales, hanging scales and portion scales. Early baby scales were introduced around the turn of the 20th century. They sometimes had a wicker basket to hold the baby. This Detecto beam-type baby scale, which weighs a child up to 30 pounds, dates to the 1920s. It has a heavy cast-iron base for stability. They sell for $30 to $50.

Bugle Boys

Question: This old bugle is etched with "Official Bugle of the Boy Scouts of America" and is hand-engraved with "Troop 81." How old is it, and what is its value?

Answer: The official bugle of the Boy Scouts of America is based on the standard U.S. Army cavalry trumpet known as the M1892 pattern, as specified by the Quartermaster General's Office of the War Department. Rexcraft, a company in Brooklyn, N.Y., began distributing bugles to the Boy Scouts of America in 1919. An undated magazine ad claimed that Rexcraft was the world's largest maker of bugles and 60,000 horns had been sold to Boy Scouts. Better-quality bugles were made during the 1930s and 1940s by instrument manufacturers such as Conn, Wurlitzer, Holton and Ludwig. Official Boy Scout bugles from the first half of the 20th century usually sell at auctions for $50 to $60. This horn's distressed condition reduces its worth.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
It is difficult to picture the great Creator conceiving of a program of one creature (which He has made) using another living creature for purposes of experimentation. There must be other, less cruel ways of obtaining knowledge. -Adlai Stevenson II, lawyer, politician, and diplomat (5 Feb 1900-1965)
