Golden Retriever Day - February 3. 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Golden Retriever Day

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs, which is why people all over the world choose to bring Goldens into their homes as four-legged family members. But these dogs can do more than just make great pets! Recognized by the American Kennel Club in the United States, the Golden Retriever is also a popular choice as a disability assistance dog, including the important task of working as guide dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf.

In addition, Golden Retrievers are trained to be hunting dogs, detection dogs, and search-and-rescue participants. The breed’s friendly, gentle temperament means it is unsuited to being a professional guard dog, but its loveable quality has also made it the third-most popular family dog breed in the United States.

History of Golden Retriever Day

Native to Scotland, this highly-adored doggy breed was created in the 1800s by landowner Lord Tweedmouth in an effort to produce a dog that could swim long distances. His brilliant mix of two of his dogs, a Retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel resulted in what we know today as the Golden Retriever.

But the breed was actually around for over 100 years before it was given an official day to celebrate it!

Created by Kristen Shroyer in 2012, the 3rd day of February was chosen as Golden Retriever Day because it was the birthday of her own Golden, Quincey. Although he’s no longer alive, the day serves as a reminder of how amazing the love of a pet can be, particularly if it is a Golden Retriever.

Joke of the Day

thanks,
A blonde has been attending Blonde International Training College, a school set up to give blondes a chance to make it in the real world, for 10 years. She keeps failing this one class that she needs to graduate : basic math. The administrators need to get her out to make room for new students, but can't just give her the grade. So, they instead decide to ask her a simple math question at the graduation ceremony. If she answers correctly, she graduates.

Sure enough, she fails the class again, and shouldn't walk across the stage, but the admins invite her to the ceremony. They stand her before everyone and say, "Although you lack one class for graduation, we have decided to pass you if you can answer this one question. What is two plus two?" The blonde thinks about it for a while and finally says, "Four." The crowd stands up in objection and demands, "Give her another chance!!"

Word of the Day

Gallionic

MEANING:
adjective: Indifferent or uncaring.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Gallio, a Roman senator, who refused to take action in a dispute. Earliest documented use: 1920.

NOTES:
The Book of Acts (chapter 18), King James version, puts it like this:
“And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. And he drave [drove] them from the judgment seat. Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat.
“And Gallio cared for none of those things.”

USAGE:
“She was never loose or gallionic about the gravity of her situation.”
Charles D’Ambrosio; Loitering; Tin House Books; 2014.

Swimming and the Mojave Desert, two things that do not go together. Right?  Not so quick! Set up by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the West Hollywood Institute in 2014, there is a swimming pool in the Mojave and it is in a hidden location. It is open to the public but one must contact the center for its exact GPS coordinates.

Researchers taught African grey parrots to buy food using tokens, then paired them up, giving one parrot ten tokens and the other zero. Without being rewarded, parrots would give some tokens to their broke partners so that everyone could eat.

Pictures of the Day

The redback spider is a potentially dangerous spider found throughout Australia. A successful bite from a female redback injects a neurotoxin into the blood stream. Individuals bitten often describe the bite as extremely painful. In September 2004, inmates at Grafton maximum security prison in New South Wales were found to be keeping redback spiders. Media reported a prisoner's allegation that other inmates had been breeding the spiders, milking them, and injecting the venom for a high. However, the authorities uncovered no supporting evidence (e.g. syringes), and concluded the spiders were kept simply as pets.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
