Inconvenience Yourself Day - February 24, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Inconvenience Yourself Day

Do you know those days when you just can’t be bothered to get out of bed? Well, Inconvenience Yourself Day is not one of them. So, put on your happy face and go out there and be nice!

The concept may have originated from Ms. Julie Thompson and it was meant to serve as an incentive for others to acknowledge their appreciation for acquaintances or strangers and to promote a respectful attitude and an attentive demeanor.

We can all celebrate by simply opening a door for an old lady, giving up a seat to a pregnant lady, helping a child cross the street, stopping to ask if a tourist is lost and needs directions, offering to carry a suitcase up the stairs and generally making a small sacrifice.

But most of all, we have to reflect on what others need and how we can help. It can make a big difference!

Word of the Day

Poplarism

A mural commemorating the Poplar Rates Rebellion (detail)

MEANING:
noun: The policy of giving generous compensation, benefits, unemployment relief, etc.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Poplar, a district in London, where in 1921 the mayor, George Lansbury, and the council decided to use the tax money to provide relief to the poor instead of sending it to London. The mayor and councilors were imprisoned for contempt of court and the incident is known as the Poplar Rates Rebellion. Rate is the British term for property tax. Earliest documented use: 1922.

USAGE:
“Poplarism sought to unite the unemployed and employed by establishing a discourse, embodied in policy, that no working person should be allowed to fall below a level set by a measure of human need.”
Gerry Mooney, Michael Lavalette; Class Struggle and Social Welfare; Routledge; 2000.

Idiom of the Day

What does 'As you sow, so shall you reap' mean?

This means that if you do bad things to people, bad things will happen to you, or good things if you do good things.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, February 24

Charming, quirky, and outgoing, it might surprise some that you require a lot of time to yourself to recharge and refresh yourself just to get back on track. You are an interesting conversationalist, including as many people as possible in the conversation, and you are extremely versatile as well. You bend over backwards to help those you care about. Your compassionate side is well-developed, but so is your business sense. You have a good head for business, although it may take you some time to choose the right career path for you. Famous people born today:

1786 Wilhelm Grimm, German story teller (Grimm's Fairy Tales), born in Hanau, Hesse-Cassel, Holy Roman Empire (d. 1859)

1874 Honus Wagner, American Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop (8-time NL batting champion), born in Chartiers Borough, Pennsylvania (d. 1955)

1955 Steve Jobs, American computer entrepreneur and co-founder of Apple, born in San Francisco, California (d. 2011)

1977 Floyd Mayweather Jr., American boxer (5 x weight division world champion; record 26 consecutive wins in world title fights (10 by KO; undefeated record 50-0), born in Grand Rapids, Michigan

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

A "nitpicker" was initially someone who meticulously looked over human hairs to make sure they were lice-free. Lice eggs are called "nits."

Nickelodeon's classic green slime was made from applesauce, vanilla pudding, oatmeal, and green dye. Not only was it safe to eat, but it was also tasty.

Spicy is not a taste because it’s not produced by taste buds. It's a pain sensation produced by your nerve receptors.

Garlic Removal Method: Salt & Baking Soda

About the method: Pour approximately 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of baking soda onto your hand. Add a tiny bit of water (enough to make a paste) then rub your hands together for 30 seconds. Follow up with soap and cold water. The baking soda should absorb the odor and the salt acts as an exfoliate.

Results: Baking soda is an amazing deodorizer, so it was no surprise that this method worked best of all. It didn’t get rid of the garlic smell completely, but it minimized it way more than any other method. Treat those dry hands to a scented moisturizer once you’re done washing, and you’ll be good to go.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
