Pride Month - June 9, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Pride Month

I think being gay and gay people are the most wonderful things in the world. I wish all of us could have the power and pride to benefit from what is rightfully ours. Why isn’t there an enormous building in Washington called the ‘National Association of Lesbian and Gay Concerns’ to lobby for us?

Larry Kramer

Pride Month is considered to be an important holiday, one that details the history of the LGBT community finding acceptance in the world. While today it’s more widely accepted, history tells long stories of why it wasn’t for the longest time. Pride Month is about being proud of who you are, so read more to learn about the LGBT community and how you can celebrate Pride Month.

History of Pride Month

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month or just Pride Month for short, is an annual holiday celebrated in the month of June that commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1968 in Manhattan. While during the 50’s and 60’s, the concept of being gay was never spoken of or publicly expressed due to the pressure of American society and the social norms that viewed being gay as a taboo and a mental disorder.

Thus, at the tip of the iceberg, when the Stonewall Inn started being raided by police because it was a gay bar, people started retaliating against police in defense of the gay bar and their believed right to be gay in the world.

LGBT pride has since been growing steadily over the past few decades, even when LGBT was considered taboo during the 70’s and 80’s. As more people started backing up the movement and people started understanding what being gay meant, Pride Month started becoming a popular concept during the 90’s and 2000’s.

Multiple holidays around out of the LGBT movement and Pride Month has become one of the biggest celebrations all over the United States, with its main center of action in New York City. In NYC, parades would commence along the streets and people would dress up in their most colorful and prideful outfits and celebrate the LGBT community for everyone to see.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Traditionally, turkeys were given to presidents to be killed for their Thanksgiving dinner. In 1989, George H.W. Bush was the first president to 'pardon' a turkey, instead.

In 1967, a Senate subcommittee theorized that by the year 1985, Americans would be working only 22 hours a week and could possibly retire by age 38.

You can't usually smell your own house (or perfume) because of a survival instinct called "olfactory adaptation." The brain is always looking for new, unusual, or changing smells as a sign of possible danger, so it ignores all the smells that have already become familiar.

Eviction attempt
These Indian rose-ringed parakeets returned to their roosting and nesting hole high up in a tree in India’s Keoladeo national park, only to find that a Bengal monitor lizard had taken up residence. The birds immediately set about trying to evict the squatter. They bit the monitor lizard’s tail, hanging on for a couple of seconds at a time, until it retreated into the hole. They would then harass it when it tried to come out to bask. This went on for two days.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Live and let live, be and let be, / Hear and let hear, see and let see, / Sing and let sing, dance and let dance. ... Live and let live and remember this line: / "Your bus'ness is your bus'ness and my bus'ness is mine." -Cole Porter, composer and songwriter (9 Jun 1893-1964)

OPTICAL ILLUSION
  1. Stare at the dots located at the center of the woman's face for about 30 seconds to a minute.
  2. Then turn your eyes immediately to the center x of the white image on the right of the woman's face.
  3. Blink quickly several times.

What do you see?

You should see an image of a woman in full-color. If you are having trouble seeing the effect, try staring at the negative image a bit longer or adjusting how far you are sitting from your computer monitor.
