Chocolate Ice Cream Day - June 7, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Chocolate Ice Cream Day

Vanilla is considered the most popular flavor of ice cream, but ever since the Italians froze hot chocolate in 1692, chocolate has been a close contender. The celebratory day itself was likely started by an ice cream manufacturer to encourage greater sales of the delightful dessert, but the question remains whether there was really any need to encourage people to eat more chocolate ice cream.

Chocolate ice cream is made by combining the cocoa powder with eggs, cream, vanilla, and sugar. The recipe is then frozen, and the more adventurous celebrant could consider making their own ice cream-based dessert in order to celebrate Chocolate Ice Cream Day, or simply open the freezer and grab any tub that is close to hand.

But what is it exactly about chocolate ice cream that we should be celebrating?

The US is the third-highest producer and consumer of the cold stuff in the world. Whilst the good old chocolate flavor may have been pipped to the post by vanilla, it is not any less worthy of being celebrated with its own day every year and is still in the top 5 rated ice cream flavors!

So, if you need a reason other than the fact that chocolate ice cream even exists, you have come to the right place! Well, if that is the case be prepared to eat your words or rather, ice cream! A firm favorite in America and of course, the rest of the world, ice cream is not just for those who are going through a breakup. But, whilst we are discussing this – has anyone actually seen a dumped party consume their body weight in ice cream whilst sobbing hysterically in front of a TV in real life? No? We did not think so but that does not negate the essential food item that is chocolate ice cream. Or even just ice cream.

  • Ice Cream is a luxury – honest! Up until the late 1800s, ice cream was only for the rich and super-elite. This is due to the fact that they were the only ones who could afford to import it and then freeze it when it arrived. So next time you are looking for a more upmarket snack – look no further than the humble yet mighty tub of chocolate ice cream.
  • Just like a bar of chocolate, chocolate ice cream is highly versatile – add it to desserts, milkshakes, top it with an assortment of sweet and savory foods, or even combine it with other chocolate foodstuffs to make a delectable dessert that is sure to induce a food coma.
  • Ice Cream Sundaes. That is it. No elaboration needed. Did you know, Ice Cream Sundaes were actually made to be served on a Sunday? Ice cream was a popular addition to soda drinks in local soda shops. By law, on Sundays, this drink was not allowed to be sold. As a way around this, a popular ice cream parlor chose to serve the ice cream and syrup without the soda to get around laws about sugary treats on the Sabbath. So the story goes anyway. But either way, the treat is still a firm favorite all over the world.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, June 7

You have strong business instincts which can aid you in your worldly goals, but you also possess a distinctly spiritual side that you share only with those very close to you. Some might call you lucky, but in truth, you make your own luck. You can be a tad stubborn and this quality can make relationships challenging, especially as you tend to attract the same quality in others. Famous people born today:

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

If the history of the universe were compressed into one calendar year, humans would appear at 10:30 PM on December 31st.

A hot drink on a hot day can cool you down. Drinking a hot beverage makes you sweat, and when the sweat evaporates, your body temperature falls.

South Korea has a different age system than we do. Koreans are considered 1-year-old when they are born, then everyone gets one year older every New Years' day.

I Love To Cook - Part 5
But I still use a few old stand-bys...for making clean and YUMMY convenience foods, like nutritional, chemical-free processed cheese to extend expensive cheddars for melty sauces and spreads; quick dinner helpers and ground meat extenders...almost forgotten sandwich fillings from the 40’s...schmeckin’ cakes (I have the recipe for real birthday cake and the buttercream bakery frosting from my youth - from scratch!). And muffins; the primary comfort food of hippies only secondary to special brownies, evidently they had been staples since the middle ages.

Plus I have a variety of books on international cooking, both new and old; for example, Julia Child’s classic, Mastering The Art Of French Cooking, rubbing shoulders with my Indian InstaPot Cooking, a Wok With Yan; books on Lebanese cuisine, down-home Southern cooking, and even one on authentic Irish recipes to contemporary standards. And the best little cookbook on classic North American desserts and sweets has to be Yankee Magazine's Just Desserts. The Chatelaine Cookbook awaits my granddaughter’s wedding, if she so chooses, just to bring her luck, though, myself, I started conjugal bliss with a Four Roses Cookbook and Marguerite Patten's Savoury Cooking. (Thank God that's all in the past. I shall say no more.)

The donation of my New York Times Cookbook to the local thrift store made way for an intro to InstaPot cookery that had within a recipe for the best risotto I’ve ever had. I slowly started going through the cookbooks I was hanging on to for the sake of a few recipes and the triggering of nostalgic memories, not unlike going through photo albums. But I have been very good, and I cannot believe how I have been able to really focus and get my cookbooks down to less than two shelves, but, oh! what jewels those that are left are. Now there is that shoe box full of recipes that will take me another 20 years to finish going through. It’s great for watching trendy recipes go out of fashion.

What every sociable cook needs is a party book, like a party diary. I have had one for many years so that I could track what we served at our family’s Christmas open house each year, and dinner parties, and more lately, church potlucks. Not that anyone could ever be bored with a mildly flavored chicken biryani with hot sauce on the side, or peanut butter pie with attendant allergy warning, but hey...my memory is shortening, and I need help to remember what I have cooked for guests and events in the past, and where those recipes are actually located when someone asks me years later for 'that pasta you made, the one with all the cheese' or 'remember that sauce for the lamb?'. Actually some of the best were stained-glass potatoes for my daughter's wedding shower, and vegan shepherd's pie, absolutely delicious by anyone's standards.

I love to cook, and I love to eat. It is no wonder I am truly a woman of girth.

Buttons - Pair earrings by attaching them to buttons, that way one never gets lost.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, is named after the Roman god of war because of its blood red color. Mars has two small, oddly-shaped moons, Phobos and Deimos, named after the sons of the Greek god Ares. At some point in the future Phobos will be broken up by gravitational forces. The atmosphere on Mars is 95% carbon dioxide. In 2003 methane was also discovered in the atmosphere. Since methane is an unstable gas, this indicates that there must be (or have been within the last few hundred years) a source of the gas on the planet.

How to DIY Homemade Pet Feeder from Plastic Bottles

Materials you may needed:

  • 2 plastic bottles
  • Pet food
  • Scissors

How to do:

  1. cut a hole on one of the bottles with scissors. The space should be a little wider than the mouth of bottle.
  2. Cut the other bottle in half width-wise.
  3. Fill the lower part with pet food
  4. Close the pieces together in each other. Unscrew the lid and place it in the orifice.
Pillow Case - Cut a hole in the top, closed end of the pillow case to cover and hang fancy clothing items. It will protect them from mildews just like plastic.

EYE OPENER
Coffee Mate Lids - The lids happen to fit perfectly over mason jars. Store your creamers in style!

Candle Stub - Use the nub of a candle as a pin cushion.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don't expect you to save the world, I do think it's not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary, and remove from your life those who offer you depression, despair, and disrespect. -Nikki Giovanni, poet and professor (b. 7 Jun 1943)

Tissue Boxes - Empty the tissue box and fill it with old grocery bags. Easily pull out and use when needed.

OPTICAL ILLUSION

What color are these circles?

answer:

They're all yellow!
