International Picnic Day - June 18, 2021

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Int'l Picnic Day

It’s often claimed that life is no picnic – but today it is! International Picnic Day is a chance to eat out in the open air with friends or family.

Placed conveniently in the middle of June, for many people this means that the weather should be fine and the sun shining (at least in the northern hemisphere). But even if the weather doesn’t want to cooperate, an inside picnic can be a great substitute. Just spread a blanket out on the floor and enjoy a simple meal!

So get that picnic basket ready and get started celebrating International Picnic Day.

History of International Picnic Day

The word “picnic” probably gets its origins from the French language, specifically from the word “pique-nique”. It is believed that this type of informal outdoor meal became a popular pastime in France after the French Revolution in the mid-1800s when it was possible again to get out into the country’s royal parks. However, even if it began in France, it has become a lovely activity that has spread all over the world.

As fans of Jane Austen novels will know, 19th-century picnics in England became elaborate social occasions, with menus featuring a wide range of cold meats and pies that took days to prepare.

Over the years, picnics have sometimes come to represent the gathering of the common people in political protest. One of the more famous of these was the Pan-European Picnic that took place in the summer of 1989 at the border of Austria and Hungary. It was part of many protests against communism that year that led to the fall of the Iron Curtain.

More recently, in 2009, the Guinness Book of World Records made note of the record for the largest picnic in the world. It took place with more than 20,000 people in Lisbon, Portugal.

Today’s picnics might be a bit more casual, sometimes just a few pieces of bread and cheese thrown into a paper bag and eaten on a park bench will suffice. A picnic can be centered around just about anything the participants want it to be, including games and other outdoor activities.

International Picnic Day is celebrated in many countries–a simple opportunity to enjoy the beauty of eating outside!

JOKE OF THE DAY

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running

The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

Ike no Taiga (池大雅, 1723–1776)
was a Japanese painter and calligrapher born in Kyoto during the Edo period. Together with Yosa Buson, he perfected the bunjinga (or nanga) genre. The majority of his works reflected his passion for classical Chinese culture and painting techniques, though he also incorporated revolutionary and modern techniques into his otherwise very traditional paintings. As a bunjin (文人, literati, man of letters), Ike was close to many of the prominent social and artistic circles in Kyoto, and in other parts of the country, throughout his lifetime.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, June 18:

You are highly intuitive – an “old soul” who can understand people from all walks of life. Not much can get past you! Your ability to communicate articulately and, at the same time, with great warmth is admirable. You can be inconstant and contradictory at times, due to mood swings and emotional restlessness. You are respected, charming, and very fair with others. Famous people born today:

1886 George Mallory, English mountain climber ("because it is there"), born in Mobberley, England (d. 1924)

1942 Paul McCartney, British rock singer-songwriter, bassist, piano player (The Beatles - "Yesterday"; "I Will"; Wings -"Silly Love Songs"), born in Liverpool, England

1952 Isabella Rossellini, Italian actress and model (Big Night, Blue Velvet), born in Rome, Italy

1976 Blake Shelton, American country singer-songwriter ("Boys 'Round Here"; "God Gave Me You"; "Honey Bee"), and TV personality (The Voice), born in Ada, Oklahoma

1986 Richard Madden, Scottish actor (Games of Thrones, Cinderella), born in Elderslie, Scotland

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

In 1995 Tom Hanks starred in the Ron Howard film 'Apollo 13'. One year later, in 1996, NASA named an asteroid after him. They named the asteroid '12818 tomhanks'.

In 1842, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna had a military burial for his leg. No, that is not a typo. He held a military funeral service filled with cannon fire, speeches, poems, and prayers, in honor of his dearly departed right leg. Four years earlier in 1838, Santa Anna lost his leg during battle with the French. Cannon fire hit his leg and as a result, doctors had to amputate the leg.

A ‘chortle’ is a type of laugh that is a mixture of a chuckle and a snort. The word was first used in the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. Carroll, author of Alice In Wonderland, is also credited with introducing the words ‘galumph’ and ‘slithy’.

Iconic Prince guitar that was once thought lost is sold for over ...
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016)

A custom guitar played by Prince at the height of his stardom in the 1980s and 1990s  sold for a staggering $563,500 at auction.

The “Blue Angel” Cloud 2 electric guitar skyrocketed beyond the estimate of $100,000 to $200,000 it was expected to fetch at the Music Icons sale run by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

Prince played the blindingly blue guitar with the artist’s “love” symbol on its neck beginning on the 1984 Purple Rain Tour, on the classic albums “Lovesexy” and “Sign O’ The Times.” He used it into the early 1990s.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) is a large diving duck. Their breeding habitat is lowland marshes and lakes in southern Europe and southern and central Asia. They are somewhat migratory, and northern birds winter further south and into north Africa. These birds feed mainly by diving or dabbling. They eat aquatic plants, and typically upend for food more than most diving ducks.

Street Side Tofu and Mushrooms

(Serves 4)

A truly authentic entrée!

  • Vegetable oil spray
  • 1 pound (approximately 2 cups) extra firm tofu, drained and cubed
  • ½ cup dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and sliced
  • 3 whole scallions (white and green parts), finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water

Preheat a wok or deep pot and spray with oil. Slowly add a quarter each of the tofu, mushrooms, and scallions, stirring constantly over high heat, until the scallions are slightly soft, approximately 1 minute. Continue to add ingredients in this manner; this should not take more than 3-4 minutes.

When all of the tofu, mushrooms, and scallions have been added, mix soy sauce and cornstarch together and quickly stir into the wok to coat. Stir and cook for 1 minute. Serve immediately.
