United States Marine Corps Birthday - November 10, 2020

DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate United States Marine Corps Birthday

The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for providing power protection from the sea using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. The Continental Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on land and at sea.

German photographer Max Leitner has published a project titled “Misleading Lines.” It’s a series of architectural photos shot in Warsaw, Poland. They’re not standard architectural images, though: Leitner photographed an urban gymnast from unusual angles perspectives to create mind-bending optical illusions.

Joke of the Day

“How did the geography student drown?”
“His grades were below C-level.”

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, November 10

You are strong-minded and intelligent. You are actively creative and dynamic. Your quick wit is apparent from the get-go. Your intelligence doesn't come from pure academics--you work from your gut instincts, which more often than not steer you on the right course. Your enthusiasm is strong, but you can also be quick to tire of one particular thing, place, or path. Although you are independent and rather wilful, you won't disregard others' wisdom. Because you have many talents and interests, you can easily stray from your path. Your biggest challenge in life is to stay focused. Famous people born today:

1483 Martin Luther, German theologian and key figure in the Protestant Reformation, born in Eisleben, Saxony, Holy Roman Empire (d. 1546)

1683 George II [Georg August], King of Great Britain and Ireland, Elector of Hanover, born in Herrenhausen Palace, Germany (d. 1760)

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

Sharks have been around longer than trees. The earliest 'tree' lived around 350 million years ago; sharks have been around for 400 million years.

Who is Willis Carrier? Depending on where you live, you may think about him year around or you may only think about him during the summer months. Carrier was an engineer who gets the credit for creating the modern day air conditioner. He was standing on a Pittsburgh train platform in 1902 when inspiration struck him.

On a typical American flag there are 5 rows of 6 stars each with 4 rows of 5 stars each between those rows, whereas you can see these 45 star flags there are 3 rows of 8 stars alternating with 3 rows of 7 stars.

Most of the American flags in Disney theme parks are fake. They have fewer stars and stripes, so Disney doesn't have to follow the flag code and lower them/light them every night.

10th November – Sesame Street Day.

First established in 2009, this day celebrates the long-running adventures of Big Bird and Co. I’m not quite sure how you celebrate today, but I think I’m just going to eat my body weight in cookies. Either that or hang around in a bin shouting at people.

The Chesme Column is a victory column in the Catherine Park

at the Catherine Palace, a former Russian royal residence in

Tsarskoye Selo, a suburb of Saint Petersburg. It was erected to

commemorate three Russian naval victories in the 1768–1774

Russo-Turkish War, including the Battle of Chesma in 1770. The

column is made from three pieces of white-and-pink marble;

decorated with the rostra of three ships' bows, and crowned by a

triumphal bronze statue depicting a Russian eagle trampling a

crescent moon, the symbol of Turkey. Bronze plaques on three

sides of the pedestal depict scenes from the battles, and the

campaign is described on the plaque on the fourth side.

REINDEER CUPS

After drinking coffee from your favorite coffee shop, dont just throw your paper cup away. You can still use them for craft time!

I figured I can make this myself and so I did. :)
Materials Needed:
-    paper cup
-    brown paper (better if in 2 different shades)
-    red and black construction paper
-    white glue
-    scissors
Wrap a piece of paper around the cup and trace the bottom and top of the cup. After tracing, the result should not be a straight line, but two curved lines. This will be your template. Use this for cutting the brown paper.
I sketched my design on my notebook first so I know how to cut the pieces of paper. I even made different deer heads to see which one works.
So for my design, I wrapped the light brown paper around the cup as my first layer. The second layer was the darker brown paper, trimmed to form the nose bridge.
Then I drew and cut circles on red and black construction paper for the eyes and nose. Just use white glue to stick them to the cup.
For the ears, cut the brown paper into two leaf-like shapes and pinch the end. Glue the pinched end to the sides.
Then for the antlers, I traced my design first with a pencil before cutting. Slightly make a crease at the center so that the antlers wont look too flat when you put them on the cup.
Wait for everything to dry before displaying them. Dont use these as drinking cups though! These are made only for decoration purposes. Im not even sure how you can drink with this when the antlers are in the way. :)
I even made him two more friends! The one in the middle was from my previous sketch, and for the one on the left I used the Starbucks paper bag for the deers skin, hence the crumpled texture. Its still cute nonetheless! :)

All done!

Great Ways You Can Make Use of Old Teabags

Tenderize your meat

Let tea bags soak in boiling water, which will release naturally occurring tannins within the tea leaves, then mix half a cup of brown sugar with the water. Pour the mixed water into your seasoned meat when you're putting it in the oven and your steak will be deliciously soft. Keep in mind, this mostly works with beef.

No more foot odor

Take dried recycled tea bags, stuff a handful into a few different socks and tie the openings. Place your sock-tea bundles in your smelly shoes and within a few days, the smell will be gone.

Soothe your eyes

Use either green or black tea bags.  Refrigerate them so they're cool but ensure they are still damp. Place them just under your eyes where the puffiness is and let them sit for about 20 minutes. After you remove it, wash your face with cool water.

Pain relief

By simply placing the cooled tea bags on the affected area for 20 minutes, you can reduce pain caused by rashes, bee stings, bug bites, sunburns, and other types of minor cuts and burns.
