Men Make Dinner Day - November 5, 2020

 DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate Men Make Dinner Day

A beautiful image isn’t it? Coming home at the end of the day and the wife has dinner all laid out and ready for her hard-working husband. Part of the bucolic yesteryear images of the 50’s, when the man worked and the woman stayed home (working harder than him most days!).

They worked to keep the house in order and running, it’s not surprising that while the tradition of the wife making dinner has persisted, most of the time it’s as part of a two-earner household.

It’s time to start turning that around, and Men Make Dinner Day is just one small step on equally sharing the responsibilities of making a home and life together.

Besides, some of the world’s greatest chefs are men, so there certainly isn’t any standing evidence that men are just worse cooks. Men Make Dinner Day is your chance to try out your culinary skills… just remember that ordering take-out isn’t actually ‘making dinner’ boys.

History of Men Make Dinner Day

Men Make Dinner Day was established to help those men that have perhaps never cooked outside of a barbecue, and are a little intimidated by the kitchen. Sandy Sharkey was responsible for the creation of this day, determined that men could be amazing in the kitchen, and help to produce some truly tremendous meals.

They’d met far too many men who were not just inexperienced in the kitchen, but were in fact entirely afraid of the prospect of approaching a kitchen with the intent of preparing a meal. Men Make Dinner Day is your opportunity to get out from in front of the barbecue, and truly amaze your family with a great meal… eventually.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, November 5

You possess a rare balance between introspection and extroversion. You are able to look within for answers, and often do, yet reaching out to others and making social connections also comes fairly easily to you. You are quietly ambitious, and a strong sense that you will achieve can carry you far. You have an aptitude for the written word and/or you are able to charm others through your words. You are more adaptable than most Scorpios, yet you are determined in whatever ignites your passions. You perhaps appear to be more versatile than you actually are. You possess your own unique vision, and you are not a conformist. Driven by a quiet sense of a personal mission, if you follow your intuition, success is almost guaranteed. Famous people born today:

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

What is Lethologica? It is… it is… oh yeah, now I remember! "Lethologica" is the inability to remember the word or words that you want to say [see what I did there?]. This is real and it is considered a psychological disorder.

Contrary to popular belief, the camel’s humps are not filled with water. Instead, these odd protrusions are mounds of fat which allow these gangly beasts to travel days through the desert without stopping for a bite to eat. The camel will
use the fat as nourishment when food is scarce. A camel can carry up to 80 pounds of fat on its back. When a camel consumes the emergency food supply, the hump will become limp and droop down. Refueling and a good night’s sleep
will return the hump to its normal upright position.

Sweet cotton candy! Did you know that cotton candy was co-invented by a dentist? That dentist in question is a man named William Morrison. The other co-inventor is John C. Warton.

5th November – Gunpowder Day.

The 5th of November, the gunpowder treason and plot. Known as Bonfire Night in the UK, on this day in 1605 one of the world’s biggest ever terror attacks was thwarted. Guido Fawkes had planned to obliterate the ruling King James I during his visit to the English Houses of Parliament with an incredibly large amount of, you guessed it, gunpowder. Whilst some think him a terrorist, others think him as a freedom fighter and visionary. Regardless of your opinion or thoughts of Guy Fawkes, set some fireworks off tonight and if you have the chance to make sure you watch V for Vendetta, if for no other reason than because it’s an awesome film.

Vegan Shepherd’s Pie

This is a super delicious dish that you don’t need to be a vegetarian to heartily enjoy.

Ingredients:

1 T. extra-virgin olive oil
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 c. crushed tomatoes
1/4 t. salt
1/8 t. black pepper
1 tin black beans
1 tin chick peas
1 tin lentils
3 c. mashed potatoes
1/4 t. paprika
2 T. vegetable ghee

Heat the oil, then add 2 of the cloves of garlic and saute for 1 minutes. Add the ppepper and saute for 4 minutes, then add 3/4 c. of the tomatoes and the salt. Cook uncovered for 3 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, mash the beans with the remaining garlic and tomatoes – but don’t puree them – then pour into an oiled casserole dish. Top with the mixture from the skillet, then spoon the mashed potatoes on top. Dot with ghee to taste, and sprinkle with paprika. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.

Notes: You can jazz things up by adding some roasted garlic or fresh rosemary to the mashed potatoes, or heat things up by adding some of my exciting chili powder (start with 1 t.) or simply using hot paprika, if you like it a little milder.

This dish is truly worth the effort. And if, like me, you live alone, this will make some wonderful hot single lunches or dinners to store in the freezer.

Pictures of the Day

Le comte Ory is a comic opera written by Gioachino Rossini in 1828. The opera is set in France in around 1200; most of the men are away at the Crusades, and the Countess Adèle and the women remaining in the castle of Formoutiers are melancholy. They are tricked into admitting a group of pilgrim nuns during a storm; these are really the scheming young Count Ory and his companions in disguise. He attempts to seduce the countess, but flees when the crusaders return. This engraving depicts the final scene of the opera, as performed by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier in 1828.
