National Chicken Soup For the Soul Day - November 12, 2020

 DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate Chicken Soup For the Soul Day

In the darkest of nights, in the most wicked of storms, when all hope and joy has left us, there is naught we need so much as a hearty bowl of chicken soup for the soul.

Anonymous

There are some books that are written to see you through the darkest days, to help shine light through the ponderous pitch-black clouds of the sky that hangs overhead. The Chicken Soup For The Soul series of books was produced explicitly for that purpose. Many are the readers who have had this book by their side as they do their best to live through the worst days of their life, and it’s all thanks to Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen that these books came to light. Chicken Soup For The Soul Day celebrates the light these two men have shed into the lives of others through this much-needed series of books.

Learn about National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day

You may have heard the words “chicken soup’ and immediately started drooling over the thought! We don’t blame you. While there will be plenty of time for you to tuck into some chicken soup on this day, that’s not what this day is about. Yes, you can indulge in this comforting food, but it is important to understand what Chicken Soup for the Soul Day is really all about. Chicken Soup for the Soul Day is actually a media, consumer good, and self-help business that is situated in Connecticut’s Cos Cob area.

The brand is familiar thanks to its series of books entitled Chicken Soup for the Soul. The first book follows inspirational stories about ordinary people. These are true stories, and they’re incredibly inspiring. The other books from the series follow the same notion, i.e. depicting true stories. This series became a bit of a social phenomenon, and it was not long for them to be deemed a best-seller. In fact, they have been popular for a couple of decades now, with more than 110 million copies being sold in Canada and the United States.

Not only is Chicken Soup for the Soul Day about celebrating these books, but it is about honoring everything they stand for. These books are all about uplifting and enlightening people, and these are the sort of things that we should all be trying to do on Chicken Soup for the Soul Day and every day forward for that matter!

History Of National Chicken Soup For The Soul Day

In 1993 two motivational speakers came together to share the stories they had collected from their audience members. Collections of stories that shared uplifting, enlightening moments of human behavior, moments that demonstrate that in spite of the dark news constantly coming from the internet and TV, there is a hearty helping of good in everyone. Simple acts of kindness that seem inconsequential to the person doing it can have a massive impact on the person receiving it.

From that first edition the book series has exploded in popularity, and over the following 24 years, 200 different titles under that theme have been published. One of the most popular and prolific series of all time, new editions continue to be published for every possible theme. Including Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul, Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover’s Soul among dozens of others. Additionally, that have produced a line of foods, including sauces, soups, and prepared foods all under their title.

So this is where it all started for National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day! The authors have said that the day is about celebrating: “who you are, where you’ve been, where you’re going, and who you will be thankful to when you get there!”

If You Were Born Today, November 12

You are determined and some might say stubborn. The trick for you is to channel your determination into something constructive--into a life path that suits you well. Otherwise, your tendency to become fixated can lead you down the wrong path, especially if you struggle with self-esteem issues. Your mind is strong, and you possess significant powers of attraction. You have a good eye for form and style. Emotional self-indulgence is a potential downfall for you. You know a good opportunity when you see one, and you are generally not afraid to take a risk. Ellis Island, the gateway to America, shut its doors after processing more than 20 million immigrants since opening in 1892. Today, an estimated 40 percent of all Americans can trace their roots through Ellis Island, located in New York Harbor off the New Jersey coast and named for merchant
Samuel Ellis (1733-1794), who owned the land in the 1770s. Ellis’s heirs
sold the island to the State of New York in 1808. Ellis Island is one of the most popular destinations in the National Park system, with over 3 million visitors each year.

OINTMENT FOR LICHEN SCLEROSIS

Few menopausal women seem to know about this problem, especially as it affects the vulva. Though it affects mostly women and can appear anywhere, this is a real problem for some ladies because mistaken for simple thinning of the tissues, it can actually erode the labia, and can be quite painful. Cortisone ointment is the treatment of choice by physicians, whose mandate is not to heal, but to monitor and control symptoms – two different outcomes.

Personally, I don’t do well with a lot of pharmaceuticals, so looking at herbs and essential oils helpful for the condition according to herbalists, naturopaths, and aromatherapists, I made the following ointment to use as needed using a hot infusion of oils.

Other useful herbs include Amala, Giloy, Kranj, Neem, Plantain, and Red Clover.

For a cold infusion, put the dried herbs in a sterile jar and cover it with the oil. Cap and put into a bright window. Shake it every day so that mold gets no chance to grow in air pockets. After a month, filter it and put into a pot. Grate the beeswax and gently heat just until the shreds are melted.

Pictures of the Day

Portrait of Pablo de Valladolid is an oil-on-canvas painting

dating from around 1635 by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez

depicting Pablo, or "Pablillos" de Valladolid (1587–1648), a

jester and actor at Philip IV's court. The subject is portrayed

full-length and dressed in black, with the right arm flung out in a

declamatory gesture. He is set against a neutral background,

with no spatial reference to the point where the feet rest except

that provided by the shadow cast by the body. The French painter

Édouard Manet was amazed at this innovation when he saw the

work. The painting is in the collection of the Museo del Prado in

Madrid.

Question: This turkey planter is a cute addition to my Thanksgiving tablescape. The bottom is marked Relpo 5503. How would it originally have been sold, and what is it worth?

Answer: Long before Benjamin Franklin ever promoted the turkey to be the national bird, the gobbler was a symbol of Thanksgiving. This planter or centerpiece, which retailed for a dollar or two, was made in Japan in the 1950s for Relpo, an importer based in Chicago. One source says Relpo was a shortened name of Reliable Glassware & Pottery Company, which was founded in 1933. The Relpo name is well known among collectors of ceramic lady head vases. Relpo turkey planters in several sizes and varieties are readily available on internet sites. Prices for the 5-inch 5503 model range from $10 to $25. As with all ceramics, be watchful of chips, which are often found on the edges of the feathers.

Not Fit for Flowers

Question: The coloring on this 4-inch-high vase transitions from green at the bottom to white at the top, with gold around the rim and a white interior. What is the age of this piece, and how much is it worth?

Answer: In the days before indoor plumbing, water had to be carried into the home. Basic items for personal use were a pitcher and basin. Pottery companies expanded what were called chamber toilet sets to include a covered chamber pot, a covered slop jar, a smaller pitcher for hot water, a covered soap dish, a toothbrush vase and a mug. Sears, Roebuck & Company catalogs from the early 1900s carried several English- and American-made semi-porcelain toilet sets for $8.25 or less. You have what appears to be the toothbrush vase from such a toilet set. Although not marked with a manufacturer's name or country of origin, the vase is likely American-made from the early 20th century. Expect to pay $10 to $25 for a similar stray piece.
