Stress Awareness Day - November 4, 2020

 DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate Stress Awareness Day

Stress can be a real killer, both in the workplace and in our day to day lives. Stress serves a solid purpose in human biology, but our modern lives have brought about a surplus of causes that haunt us from day to day.

When we are faced with a challenge, or a threat to our well-being, the body experiences stress. Whether you’re dealing with a job that puts you under tremendous pressure, or face struggles in your life or relationship that leave you in a state of constant worry, stress can be a real killer.

Stress Awareness Day was set aside as time to be aware of the stress in our lives and how it affects us.

History of Stress Awareness Day

Stress Awareness Day was established by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) to help provide information on stress, and strategies on how to address it for both companies and individuals.

The organization is focused on helping employers and employees help each other by providing comprehensive guides to establishing a program within their organization, and individuals by looking after their health and well-being on a day to day basis.

Stress Awareness Day is your opportunity to start looking after yourself and your life, and break down the individual stressors in your life. Failure to deal with stress in your life effectively can lead to serious health problems, including increased blood pressure, susceptibility to heart disease, and a decline in your immune system.

Once you start experiencing these symptoms they can landslide into each other, resulting in growing sickness, and by extension, more stress. It’s truly a self-feeding problem and a cycle that is necessary to control to enjoy our lives.

DAILY SQU-EEK .. sorry

If You Were Born Today, November 4

You possess a versatile and creative mind, yet you have a strong appreciation for concrete results. Although you indulge in the pleasures of life, you are also very hard-working and take much pride in your work and in your hobbies. You deal with pressures rather well, and you are able to right yourself quickly when things do go wrong. Inside, you are passionate and ardent. Your sensitivity and your emotional nature are not very apparent on the surface of things. You have the ability to stick to a project and make sure it functions properly. Determined and quietly bold, you have what it takes to succeed in life. Famous people born today:

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism. However, that is a title, not a name. So what is the real name of the 14th and current Dalai Lama? That would be Tenzin Gyatso and he just turned 85 years old on July 6.

The song “A Boy Named Sue” was made famous by music legend Johnny Cash. The song, which was recorded at the San Quentin State Prison concert on February, 24, 1969, was released as a single in July of that same year. The person who wrote the lyrics for that song was also a famous and known name. So who wrote this popular song? The answer would be Shel Silverstein, a poet and writer who wrote children’s books such as The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Are you a victim of Thalassophobia? If you are afraid of water or the open sea, then the answer is yes. The word “thalassa” is a Greek word that means ocean or sea. If you suffer from an intense and sometimes unwarranted fear of being in or near a big body of water, then you suffer from thalassophobia.

Rosacea?

Nutritional Approaches To Rosacea … sadly, there is no cure

Eat turmeric (1/2″ of the root daily) and cut out the gluten. It is not a digestible protein, for starters, and it causes inflammation throughout the body, including the joints and brain.

Use only fermented dairy (yogurt, cheeses, and sheep or goat products are better than bovine because of the shorter proteins).

Eat porridge frequently, as it draws toxins and heavy metals from the gut.

Keep SAM-e tablets around for flare-ups, and use like aspirin but without harm to the gastro-intestinal tract.

Antioxidant Facial Oil

Clean a small bottle (like the ones at the dollar store) and  spray it with alcohol before filling with:

10 ml Rosehip Oil / Sea Buckthorn Oil (strong antioxidants)
90 ml Coconut Oil (the liquid form; it is a drying oil that liquifies sebum in the pores, and is better for young or oily complexions) or Grapseed Oil (very toning, for normal to dry complexions)
50 drops Fennel Essential Oil (to encourage subdermal collagen production)

Use a few drops as a make-up remover. For bed time, just massage into the skin, rinse with tepid water, and pat dry, adding a little more around the eyes if needed. As a daytime moisturizer, massage a few drops into your skin, gently rinse, and blot dry.

Rosacea Facial Mist

Into a small spray bottle (prepared as above) put in:

120 ml Distilled Water
36 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Use to mist the face several times a day. If you want a product that sets your makeup, add 1/2 t. vegetable glycerine.

Your dose of support: sometimes life is a marathon and sometimes life is a cha-cha

I had a very unusual day last week.  I was at work, seeing patients and mentoring medical students and residents, enjoying my morning.  I received a text asking if I could play tennis over lunch and was so excited to be invited, get some exercise and see some friends.  On my way to tennis, I also learned that a very positive life change was coming my way.  I stepped onto the tennis court with excitement about the moment and my future.  I soon found out that the reason I was invited to play was because there was a death in the family of another tennis player. I also knew the person who died and was instantly devastated.  All of the joy and build-up in the hours leading up to my lunch time tennis was deflated in an instant.  I was distracted, in emotional pain and so sad for the family of my friend.

I have been thinking a lot about the adage: life is not a sprint, life is a marathon.  We are supposed to focus on the process not the result.  We are supposed to hang on through the long haul instead of jumping on each small reward in life.  It implies that, in the end, the long journey is an overall steady trajectory to fulfillment of values and goals.

I am starting to believe, however, that the journey isn’t like a marathon. There is not a clear course, there are few spectators cheering us on (and, in the case of parenting, we may be actively criticized by our “fans” of ages 12-18), and the journey has more pot holes and detours than I care to count.  In fact, life seems more like a cha-cha. We take two steps forward, one step back, and then take a bunch of indecisive back and forth stutter steps (the cha-cha-cha which gives the dance its name) before deciding to step forward again.  Did I mention the spinning and changing direction?  “Going forward” may mean you take a left turn and start life in a new direction.  I can’t even begin to talk about the hip shaking that makes me want to proactively consult an orthopedic surgeon.  Yes, most of the time life feels like a cha-cha.

As I try to make sense of this pandemic in my life, I see a slow, long march to a light at the end of the tunnel (perhaps like a marathon) but the lived day-to-day experience is much more like a cha-cha.  I enjoy finding new ways to connect with friends and family (one step forward), I have taken opportunities to expand my businesses and try new hobbies (one step forward) and I have seen and experienced the barriers that this virus pose to our most vulnerable populations (one step back).  I find myself questioning decisions I have made for myself, my children and my community before concluding that I, like everyone else, am doing the best I can (cha-cha-cha).

When your marathon gets interrupted by a cha-cha, as it inevitably will, sink those hips in and roll with it.  Accept where you are, know it will not last, keep breathing and find times to enjoy the dance.  After all, your smile is gorgeous and goes a long way to impress the judges.  I’ll see you on the dance floor in full glitter and fringe — scared sh-tless and laughing with you.

Don’t believe me? Check out this cha-cha: https://youtu.be/rYCHX0WJ2n4
