Smart is Cool Day - October 22, 2020

 DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate Smart is Cool Day

If there’s ever a time to show off your IQ test results, Smart is Cool Day is probably it. Though it’s not clear where the tradition started, the eggheaded individual’s idea was absolutely brilliant.

Schools typically put together shows for their pupils and students and invite both street-smart youngsters and successful degree holders to speak to them about the importance of staying in school. But there’s really no need for that, because all it takes to see smart people are cool is to Google Mayim Bialik, Zach Braff or Matthew McConaughey and to check out their background.

To celebrate Smart is Cool Day, put on your vintage T-shirt and your corduroys and check out Sheldon Cooper’s latest adventures. Then test your wits at the IQTest.com and tell all your friends that you decided to become a doctor. Then download the Mensa app and enroll to become a Mensa member. Don’t forget to wear a cap saying ‘I make smart cool’ and to post your selfie for all to see, because it’s always nice to share your gifts with your friends, intellectual or otherwise.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, October 22

Although you are personally magnetic, you have a manner that is slightly intimidating to others, making you a little hard to get close to. You give off the subtle impression that perhaps you don't really need new people in your life. You do, although you tend to be somewhat selective when it comes to your social life, simply because your work is extremely important to you and you value your time. There is a no-nonsense directness about you that inspires trust in others. You give the impression of solidity, strength of character, dependability, and honesty. Although you are an idealist and visionary, you still manage to keep your feet on the ground. You don't seem capable of doing things halfway, and that includes your relationships. You are quite focused on achieving in life. Famous people born today:

1811 Franz Liszt, Hungarian romantic composer and virtuoso pianist (Faust Symphony), born in Raiding, Hungary (d. 1886)

How one man turns annoying cold calls into cash

In 2011, a man in the UK was tired of marketers calling him, so he set his phone line as a premium rate number. When telemarketers called him, he would make money by letting them talk.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the biggest snowflake ever recorded fell in January of 1887. Landing in Fort Keogh, which is based in Montana, the snowflake was recorded at 15″ across.

Medieval English longbows could fire an arrow further than 300 yards - which is almost the distance of 3 football fields. So much strength was required to operate them that ancient skeletons can be identified as longbow archers due to their
enlarged left arms.

Pictures of the Day

Venus and Adonis is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Italian

artist Paolo Veronese, created in the early 1580s. The work

illustrates a scene from the Metamorphoses, a narrative poem

by the Roman poet Ovid. It portrays Venus, the goddess of love,

with Adonis sleeping on her lap. She has foretold that her lover

will be killed during a hunt, and she is looking down at her son

Cupid, who is restraining a sighthound in a vain endeavour to

prevent Adonis from hunting and thus precipitating his death.

The painting is now in the collection of the Museo del Prado in

Madrid.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

Which book did you read in college or high school that was actually interesting enough that you still think or talk about it sometimes?
