Water a Flower Day May 30, 2018

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Water a Flower Day
Image result for Water a Flower Day gif
If it hadn’t been for coffee, cocoa, vanilla, lavender, camomile, marijuana, and many other flowering plants and trees, our world would have been a barren, dismal place. So Water a Flower Day is that yearly reminder to show our flowers how much we appreciate them for their sumptuous colors, their fragrant blossoms and their medicinal, or sometimes lethal, properties.
The best way to celebrate Water a Flower Day is by giving all of your household and garden plants an aquatic treat. Also, studies show that gently caressing them in the way that a diaphanous zephyr would in their natural habitat promotes growth, so don’t be shy, give their leaves a tender squeeze. Unless you own a Rafflesia Arnoldii, the largest flower on the planet, which doesn’t have any leaves and is also known as the ‘corpse flower’ due to the odor it oozes when disturbed. That’s one plant we wouldn’t mind forgetting to water, isn’t it? Best stick to roses and lilies, I say, and water them, stroke and sing to them like you would to a child. You’ll be a better person for it and you’d make the world a brighter, sweeter and more colorful place.
thanks for sharing the cherry, pear, and apples blossoms in your orchid, Patty

Biafra was composed of several Nigerian states heavily populated by the Igbo people—tens of thousands of whom has been massacred in Nigeria months earlier. After its secession, the breakaway state was attacked by air, land, and sea and gradually lost the territory under its control, including its crucial oil fields. More than one million civilians are thought to have died of starvation by the time Biafra surrendered in 1970.

A contemporary of American aviatrix Amelia Earhart, German airwoman Elly Beinhorn-Rosemeyer began her flying career as a stunt pilot. She went on to make several daring solo flights and was awarded the Hindenburg Cup for her achievements. In 1936, she married racecar driver Bernd Rosemeyer, and the couple, allegedly with some reluctance, became darlings of the Nazi regime. Bernd was killed in a speed record attempt two years later.

Inland thornbill
The inland thornbill (Acanthiza apicalis) is an insect-eating bird of Australia. It averages 10 centimeters (3.9 in) in length and 7 grams (0.25 oz) in weight. This small bird lives in dry scrublands and woodlands, as well as the sand heaths and karri and jarrah forests of Southwestern Australia. It feeds on small insects and spiders, and occasionally seeds and small vegetable matter, beneath shrubs and in foliage.

While exploring Burough Market in London, I was delighted to come across four lovely young women dressed in vintage white dresses, eating ice cream as the local shopkeeper looked on. Are they brides? Or bridesmaids. I don’t know, but they are obviously enjoying a very special day. Location: Burough Market, London, England

WHO FORMED THE IDEA OF THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL?

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was founded by Jan Scruggs, who served in Vietnam (in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade) from 1969-1970 as a infantry corporal. He wanted the memorial to acknowledge and recognize the service and sacrifice of all who served in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Inc. (VVMF), a nonprofit charitable organization, was incorporated on April 27, 1979, by a group of Vietnam veterans (John Wheeler, Chairman of the Board for VVMF, served in Vietnam as a captain at U.S. Army headquarters from 1969-1970; Robert Doubek, VVMF project director, then executive director, served in Vietnam from 1968-1969 as an Air Force intelligence officer) in Washington, D.C. Jan Scruggs (President of VVMF) lobbied Congress for a two acre plot of land in the Constitution Gardens. Significant initial support came from U.S. Senators Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. (on November 8, 1979, Senator Mathias introduced legislation to authorize a site of national parkland for the Memorial) of Maryland and John W. Warner (Senator Warner launched the first significant financial contributions to the national fund raising campaign) of Virginia. On July 1, 1980, in the Rose Garden, President Jimmy Carter signed the legislation (P.L. 96-297) to provide a site in Constitution Gardens near the Lincoln Memorial. It was a three and half year task to build the memorial and to orchestrate a celebration to salute those who served in Vietnam.
