In 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot in Vatican City's St. Peter's Square by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, who was captured and imprisoned. Although the pontiff was shot in the stomach, he recovered and publicly forgave his would-be assassin. In spite of the physical setback caused by the shooting, he continued to travel widely, eventually visiting 129 nations and increasing the international character of the papacy.

A peculiar celebration to commemorate an event involving cats, Kattestoet is held in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium. In the celebration today, about 2,000 people, dressed as cats, witches, and giants, march in a parade to the tune of bagpipes. Floats depict the history of the town and of feline figures—Puss in Boots, the Egyptian cat-headed goddess Bast, and others. The climax of the celebration comes when a jester throws toy witches and stuffed cloth cats from the town belfry.

2. According to the Pew Research Center, more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year.
3. A research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, found that flowers affect human behavior and make people feel happier and more compassionate around fresh-cut blooms.

4. Approximately 65% of all greeting card sales occur in the last five days before Mother’s Day.
5. Women purchase 80% of all Mother’s Day cards.
6. In what was formerly Yugoslavia, children would tie up their mother on Mother’s Day. The only way she could be freed would be to “pay” her children with candy and treats.
7. Anna Jarvis is considered the founder of Mother’s Day in the United States. She quit her job to focus full-time on persuading politicians, business executives and civic leaders into making the holiday official. On May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day thanks to the persistence of Jarvis. Jarvis never married nor had children of her own.
8. Around one-quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year are purchased for Mother’s Day.
9. Many of the trademark sweaters that Mr. Rogers wore on his television show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, were knitted by his real mother.
10. Mother’s Day was intended to be a day to honor mothers individually and not collectively, thus the reason for the apostrophe before the “s” – making it singular possessive instead of plural possessive.
11. Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for the restaurant industry with 62% of Americans dining out.

During the war, Nightingale (1820–1910) organised the tending to wounded soldiers, and became iconic in Victorian culture as "The Lady with the Lamp". In 1860, Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London. She has been recognized as the founder of modern nursing, and the pledge taken by new nurses and the highest international distinction a nurse can achieve were named in her honor.

SWEETS
Grandma’s Honey Cake
From Baking with the Brass Sisters by Marilynn and Sheila Brass, © 2015.
Inline image
Yield: 2 loaves; 9 slices per loaf

Ingredients

2 teaspoons instant coffee or instant espresso
1 cup hot water
3 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger

3 eggs, separated

1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda

3 tablespoons warm water

1⁄2 cup oil

1 cup honey
1⁄2 cup thinly sliced almonds, toasted

Directions

Set the oven rack in the middle position. Preheat the oven to 350°. Coat two 9 by 5 by 3-inch loaf pans with vegetable oil spray. Line the bottom and ends of the pans with a single strip of wax paper and coat with vegetable oil spray. Dust the pans with our and tap to remove the excess.
Add the instant coffee to the hot water and allow to cool, or place in the refrigerator to hasten the cooling. Add the flour, salt, cinnamon, and ginger to a large bowl and whisk to combine. Set aside.
Add the egg whites to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and whip the whites until they form firm peaks. Set aside. If you don’t have a second mixer bowl, transfer the egg whites to another bowl and set aside. The honey cakes come together quickly so the beaten egg whites will not have time to deflate.
Add the sugar and egg yolks to the bowl of the stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat to combine. Turn off the mixer and, using a rubber spatula, scrape down the mixture from the sides and bottom of the bowl.
Add the baking soda to the warm water and stir to combine. Set aside. Whisk together the oil, honey, and cooled coffee in a small bowl. Add the baking soda mixture, and continue to whisk until combined.
With the mixer running, add the sifted dry ingredients to the egg-yolk mixture alternately with the liquid ingredients. Once combined, remove the bowl from the stand and fold in the beaten egg whites in three additions. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. The batter will be very loose.Sprinkle the almonds on top of the loaves and bake for 30 minutes. Tent each cake with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until a metal tester inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack and cool for at least 20 minutes. Go around the edges of each cake with a butter knife and turn out onto a second wire rack. Invert the cakes onto the first rack and continue to cool. Grandma Goldberg’s Honey Cake should be wrapped in wax paper and stored at room temperature.

Woman Rescues Wingless Queen Bee; Builds Her a Tiny Garden to Live Out Final Days twistedsifter

Last Spring, Fiona Presly was gardening outside her home in Scotland when she noticed a queen bumblebee at her feet. She quickly sensed that something wasn’t right as the bee seemed shaky and disoriented.
Afraid she might get stepped on, Fiona bent down and noticed the queen bee had no wings.

Not sure how else to help, Presly offered the bee some sugar water and set her on some flowers, hoping she’d be able to eventually manage on her own. When she checked the spot a few hours later, however, she found the bee hadn’t budged. To make matters worse, a heavy storm was brewing — so Presly went one step further:
“I took her inside that night, kept her warm and fed her more,” she said. “I thought I would put her out the next day, but the weather was bad then too. So I kept her inside.”

Now in recovery, Presly reached out to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust for help. They told her it was likely she had a virus known to cause wing development issues. Unable to fly, the chances of survival were slim.
Saddened, Presly decided that she would try to help the bee, making her a tiny private garden to live out her final days.

Fiona aptly named her new friend ‘Bee’ and built her a private little garden to pollinate. She enclosed the garden in netting so her winged counterparts couldn’t swoop in and deplete the garden.

Fiona continued to check on her friend daily, giving her sugar water whenever she seemed weak. Bee seemed to be adjusting to her new home and getting more and more comfortable around her new ‘friend’

As the days continued, Fiona noticed Bee would emerge from the foliage every time she dropped by the enclosure. “She’d walk toward me and crawl on my hand,” Presly said.
“She seemed so happy to see me. It made me stop and think — there’s something going on here.”

According to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, queens typically spend spring and summer building a nest, mating, and starting a colony — eventually dying at the approach of Autumn.
Under Fiona’s care, Bee had outlived them all, but five months after being rescued Bee fell asleep one last time, never again to wake.

“I was sad when she died, but I knew it was going to happen. She was already older than she should have been,” Presley said. “It had been very special to stay with a wee creature, like Bee. The fact that she lived more than just a few weeks amazed me. That was rewarding in itself.”
Afterward, Presly buried Bee’s body in her garden — joined by a favorite flower.
