Ecological Debt Day is a day intended to remind people of the impact of a modern life-style on the planet. It marks the point in each Gregorian calendar year where human consumption of natural resources exceeds the earth’s ability to replace those resources that year. At a sustainable rate of consumption, Ecological Debt Day would fall at the end of each calendar year.
Calculating all the resources available on earth, and the actual resources used, is, of course, an inexact science, so the precise placement of this Day should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, it serves as a useful reminder that humans are living beyond their means.
The Day, also known as Earth Overshoot Day, is a good time to hold conservation campaigns, implement and advertise more eco-friendly ways of life, and generally work towards sustainable living.

First Issue of Sports Illustrated Is Published (1954)
The first issue of Sports Illustrated—featuring Milwaukee Braves star Eddie Mathews at bat—was published in 1954. Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888)
Lawrence was a British adventurer, soldier, and scholar popularly known as Lawrence of Arabia. He learned Arabic while on an archaeological expedition in Mesopotamia, then served in intelligence for the British army in Egypt during WWI. After conceiving a plan to support an Arab rebellion against the Ottoman Empire—a German ally—he joined the Arab forces and became a leader in the revolt, but he failed to achieve the formation of an independent Arab state. |
Daimonji Okuribi
In Japan, the belief that the souls of the dead return to earth during the Obon Festival gave rise to the custom of lighting great bonfires to guide the souls back to heaven after their yearly visit. This custom is known as Daimonji Okuribi, the Great Bonfire Event. In the city of Kyoto, an enormous flammable structure, built in the shape of the Chinese character dai, meaning "big," is set on fire on the hill in back of the Zenrinji Temple. The character is 530 feet tall and 510 feet wide, providing a spectacular display for city residents. |

Ursa Major is a constellation in the northern sky. Its Latin name means "greater (or larger) she-bear", standing as a reference to and in direct contrast with nearby Ursa Minor, the lesser bear. It was one of the original 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, and is now the third largest constellation of the 88 modern constellations. Ursa Major is visible throughout the year from most of the northern hemisphere, and appears circumpolar above the mid-northern latitudes.

This tree was dubbed one of most terrifying trees in Britain as it appears to dribble slime from its gaping mouth. Located in the grounds of Stowlangtoft Hall, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, the 70ft tall beech looks reminiscent of the Whomping Willow tree in Harry Potter or an enchanted Disney forest. Photographed by local David Garnham, he believes the bizarre tree - which also appears to have a twisted tongue forking from its mouth - looks like nature's very own version of Edvard Munch's classic Scream painting.
