Victoria Day - May 22, 2023

DIANE'S CORNER ..
Celebrate Victoria Day

Celebrating the birthday of the British sovereign, Victoria Day offers Canadians a chance to commemorate the birth of Queen Victoria who reigned as the British monarch for an impressive 63 years!

History of Victoria Day

For more than 150 years, since 1845, the birthday of Queen Victoria has been considered a national holiday in the country of Canada. Victoria reigned as the British sovereign from 1837 to 1901, which means she was the queen at the important time when the Dominion of Canada became its own nation in 1867.

After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Canadian Parliament established Victoria Day as a legal holiday throughout the country.

While Queen Victoria’s actual birthday was on May 24,1819, the decision was made in 1952 to always celebrate the holiday on a Monday, whichever one falls before May 25. This allows Canadians to attach their holiday to the weekend to take full advantage of the opportunity to travel or visit with family.

The sovereign leaders who followed Queen Victoria had different traditions for this celebration. The birthday of Victoria’s son, Edward VII, was also celebrated on Victoria Day, but the next three kings (George V, Edward VIII, and George VI) were not.

When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1952, her first birthday as queen and every subsequent one until her death in 2022, was celebrated on Victoria Day. This nod to her great-great grandmother became the tradition, even though Elizabeth’s actual birthday was on April 21.

Victoria Day offers Canadians and others around the world the opportunity to show respect for and honor to the British monarch who wears the crown!

How to Celebrate Victoria Day

It’s fun to celebrate and enjoy Victoria Day, this important Canadian national holiday, in a variety of ways, including some of these:

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
What is ‘Flip Night’ at the Front Porch? Also, what is the Front Porch? It’s a bar located in the city of Denver, Colorado. Once a week they host ‘Flip Night’, where patrons get to flip a coin to decide the fate of their drink. If they guess the correct outcome (heads or tails), the drink is free. However, if they guess wrong, they pay DOUBLE.

Contrary to what some used to believe, cracking your knuckles does not hurt or cause any bone damage. The sound you hear is bursting gas bubbles.

Part of the film watching experience are the movie trailers or previews that are shown. But why are they called trailers when they are shown before the movie? That’s because once upon a time these preview clips were shown AFTER the movie, hence the name “trailer”.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The Sleeping Gypsy is an 1897 oil-on-canvas by the French Naïve artist Henri Rousseau. It is a fantastical depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping woman on a moonlit night. Rousseau first exhibited the painting at the 13th Salon des Indépendants, and tried unsuccessfully to sell it to the mayor of his hometown, Laval. It instead entered the private collection of a Parisian charcoal merchant, where it remained until 1924, when it was discovered by the art critic Louis Vauxcelles. The Paris-based art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler purchased the painting in 1924, although a controversy arose over whether the painting was a forgery. It was acquired by art historian Alfred H. Barr Jr. for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it remains.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a report, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you'll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
