Apple Day - October 21, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Apple Day

Braeburn, Discovery, Red Jonagold, Pink Lady, and a million other varieties with a million different evocative names, and each one more delicious than the last!

Here’s to thee, old apple tree,
Whence thou mayst bud
And whence thou mayst blow!
And whence thou mayst bear apples enow!
Hats full! Caps full!
Bushel—bushel—sacks full,
And my pockets full too! Huzza!

South Hams of Devon, 1871

Every year the exquisite orchards spill forth a cavalcade of crimson, gold, and green, and it’s not just the leaves of Autumn. On the heels of this rolling bounty comes the rich smell of apple pies, spicy ciders (both alcoholic and not), and all the tastes and smells of this seasonal treat.

This is the time to celebrate everything that has to do with National Apple Day!

History of National Apple Day

Each year, people in various parts of the world gather for a celebration of the most delicious harvest of the year and come together to share the joy and fun of apples. Events range in size from minor to full-blown fairs in villages all over the country, where enthusiasts come together to share recipes for juice and cider, advice on how to properly grow their apples, and information on all the apple varieties available.

First made an official event in 1990 in Covent Garden, the events for National Apple Day have been celebrated every year since, and it has grown from a local event to one celebrated all over in different parts of the globe. It has grown from a simple celebration of the apple to a recognition of cultural and genetic diversity in food that should not be allowed to pass from the world.

Apples can be eaten and enjoyed not only on National Apple Day but every day. After all, as the old saying goes: “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Abraham Bradley Jr. (1767–1838) was an American lawyer, judge, and cartographer who served as Assistant Postmaster General for 30 years during the earliest history of the United States Post Office Department. He was responsible for moving the federal government's post office from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the new capital at Washington, D.C., and briefly hosted the national post office in his own home. The continuity brought by Bradley's long employment during the tenures of five United States postmasters general helped establish the budding postal service as a reliable provider; he also drew detailed and innovative postal route maps that built the office's efficiency. He drew one of the first comprehensive maps of the United States in 1796; it "represented the first clear cartographic break in European-dominated map making and introduced a new, more distinctly American style of cartography to the United States". In 1804, Bradley drew this map of American post roads and post offices, spanning the Orleans Territory (now Louisiana) in the southwest to Maine in the northeast. The hand-colored map measures 98 by 132 centimeters (39 in × 52 in).

Potato Sack Kitchen Scrubbie
In just 7 minutes or less you can recycle a mesh potato sack, get in some crocheting and make yourself a great upcycled potato sack kitchen scrubbie! My ten year old loved this so much he even started asking the neighbors for their potato sacks, whaddya know. And I think I'll make as many as I can and give them as little gifts, which though you may be raising an eyebrow, will be greatly appreciated as we do not use sponges on shabbat, but this is permitted. Plus, it just happens to be really cute, especially on account of the red bag (that held red potatoes) and the space-dyed yarn.
Potato sack recycled kitchen scrubbie
You'll Need:
  • a mesh potato bag (or any mesh bag of course)
  • mercerized cotton yarn, (space died looks great) or cotton string will work as well
  • clothespins
How To:
Cut the top off the bag, rather than tearing a hole in the side! Fold the bag into a rectangle or square, such that all the edges are folded to the inside. Clip the layers with clothespins on each side.
Round 1: Attach yarn and crochet around the square, trying to space your stitched evenly, and crocheting two or three stitches in the corner. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
Round 2: Single crochet around, crocheting 3sc in the corner, and attaching with a slip stitch to the first stitch. Tie the two ends together and trim yarn.
That is it, wasn't that fun and oh so practical as well as GREEN?
