Volunteer Recognition Day - April 20, 2022

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Volunteer Recognition Day

There are cynics out there who will say that true altruism is a myth, that it doesn’t exist, and that nobody is capable of doing anything unless they are motivated by their own self-interest in the end.

But even the most embittered cynics would be hard-pressed to explain why anyone in their right mind would make the choice to travel to the poorest parts of the world, where hunger, sickness and war ravage the population and death is as commonplace as life, to help care for orphaned children.

Or why a comfortable middle-class citizen would choose to spend his or her afternoons teaching neglected teenagers how to read in the dirtiest, most gang-ridden part of town. Or why any nurse would risk his or her life to care for wounded soldiers on the very front.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, but they are all the real-life saints and superheroes of this world. And although they don’t ask to be paid for all of their selfless work, they definitely deserve our utmost respect and appreciation, which is exactly what Volunteer Recognition Day is all about.

History of Volunteer Recognition Day

People who have risked their own safety in order to help others expecting nothing in return have existed for hundreds and thousands of years. Ben Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America, was also the creator of the very first volunteer fire department that helped put out many Philadelphia fires.

Florence Nightingale, often called the mother of modern nursing, was just as much a hero as any of the soldiers fighting in the Crimean War when she cared for the wounded. Acclaimed whodunit authoress Agatha Christie volunteered as a nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Red Cross Hospital in Torquay from 1914 to 1917 when her husband Archie was fighting in World War I.

Mother Theresa of Calcutta, a Catholic nun, spent most of her life in India caring for the those suffering from HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. More recently, many Hollywood celebrities such as Angelina Jolie have made numerous trips to various impoverished parts of the world in an attempt to understand the problems of those living there and find ways to help them. All of these people and many, many more, have changed the world for the better forever.

IDIOM OF THE DAY

What does the saying 'Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' mean?

Meaning: 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' is a proverb meaning that it is better to have something that is certain than take a risk to get more, where you might lose everything.

tried and tested just to be sure.....

Gentle Spray Deodorant

Make a pot of strong sage tea with 2 teaspoons of sage to 2 cups of boiling water. While you're sipping one cup of this healthful brew, strain another and allow it to cool.

1 c. sage infusion

2 T. of vodka

4 drops lavender EO

4 drops peppermint EO

Filter it into a spritz bottle, and shake well before spraying. It's nice for clearing the air or spraying around the bedroom, too, and if your pets are couch potatoes, chasing them with this will give them a week's worth of exercise.

Sage is astringent, and the lavender/peppermint blend make for a brisk, but nice, unisex fragrance. Add a pinch of alum powder if you have problem perspiration.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Oil-on-panel portrait of Sir Thomas More by Hans Holbein the Younger (1527Thomas More was a lawyer and political figure in 16th century England, best remembered as Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor. St. Thomas More was an influential shaper of modern thought, introducing the term Utopia with his novel by the same name, and at the same time a devout Catholic, even embracing ascetic practices such as the use of a hair shirt. He became increasingly firm in his Catholic religious convictions and fell into disfavour with Henry VIII over his refusal to accept Henry as the head of the Church of England. This in turn lead to More's execution at the Tower of London in 1535. On the 400th anniversary of his execution, More was declared a Saint.

2 INGREDIENT CHOCOLATE HAZEL PALMIERS
Ingredients
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 3/4 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
Yield
Serves: a dozen cookies
Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°F.

On a floured surface, roll the puff pastry out until flat. Using an offset spatula, spread the chocolate-hazelnut spread all over the puff pastry to cover. Starting with one long side of the sheet, roll the puff pastry in a spiral to the middle of the puff pastry sheet. Do the other to the same side to make a really long palmier shape.

Using a sharp knife, cut the log into cookies 1/2-inch thick and place them onto a parchment-lined sheet tray.

Bake for 15 minutes or until the cookies are puffy and golden brown.

how long would you wait????

French Fries Challenge

A non-participant should make a trip to several fast food restaurants getting fries. Leaving them in the containers from the restaurants, they should be hidden from the participants. Each participant will need a blindfold and when the challenge begins they will all be given a fry from each place one at a time trying to guess where the fry came from. Of course, the best guesser will be given a point for each correct answer and in the end, the one with the most points wins the challenge.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions. -Robert Lynd, writer (20 Apr 1879-1949)
