International Day of Pink .. April 13, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Int'l Day of Pink

The International Day of Pink is set up as an International Day against bullying, discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and transmisogyny in cities and towns all across the world. On this day, everyone is invited to celebrate diversity by wearing a pink shirt and by organizing activities in their workplaces, schools, and communities in support of the day.

History of the International Day of Pink

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia, Canada, when two straight high school students saw a gay student being bullied because he was wearing a pink shirt. The two students intervened at the moment, but they also wanted to do more to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying in their school.

In a stroke of creative genius, these two young men decided to purchase pink shirts and wear them. Not only that, but a few days later they also got almost everyone else at their school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity for anti-bullying. The result was that an entire school took a stand and began working together to prevent bullying of any type, particularly related to homophobia and transphobia.

The International Day of Pink campaign has continued to grow. It is now an international anti-bullying campaign that thrives in schools, workplaces, and communities. The International Day of Pink and the conversations, awareness, and acceptance that stem from it are making a real difference in the lives of queer and trans youth. So this is just the day to wear pink, spark some conversations, and inspire acceptance.

Get ready to celebrate International Day of Pink!

Why could a knitter never be Prime Minister?

Because she would keep too much yarn in her cabinet.

TODAY'S ARTIST

thanks, Natalie
Jan Müller (December 27, 1922 – January 29, 1958)
was a New York-based figurative expressionist artist of the 1950s. According to art critic Carter Ratcliff, "His paintings usually erect a visual architecture sturdy enough to support an array of standing, riding, levitating figures. Gravity is absent, banished by an indifference to ordinary experience." According to the poet John Ashbery, Müller "brings a medieval sensibility to neo-Expressionist paintings."

IDIOM OF THE DAY

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into the shark's stomach from underneath, causing the shark to explode.

Hershey's Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like it's kissing the conveyor belt.

Samuel Clemens's pseudonym "Mark Twain" was the nickname of a riverboat pilot about whom Clemens wrote a needless nasty satirical piece. Apparently, Clemens felt guilty later and adopted the nom de plume as some sort of expiation. The phrase "mark twain" from which the river pilot got his name does not mean two fathoms (twelve feet.)

5 Year-Old's First Pay-Check

Here's a truly heartwarming story about the bond formed between a little 5 year-old girl & some construction workers. This will make you believe that we all can make a difference, when we give a child the gift of our time.

A young family moved into a house, next to a vacant lot. One day, a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family's 5 year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the workers.

Eventually the construction crew, all of them "gems-in-the-rough," more or less adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her; let her sit with them, while they had coffee and lunch breaks and gave her 20 little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week, they even presented her with a pay envelope containing ten dollars.

The little girl took this home to her mother, who suggested that she take her 10 dollars "pay" she had received to the bank the next day to start a savings account. When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed & asked the little girl how she had come by her very own paycheck at such a young age. The little girl proudly replied, "I worked last week with a real construction crew, building the new house next door to us."

"Oh my goodness gracious," said the teller, "and will you be working on the house again this week, too?"

The little girl replied, "I will, if those assholes at Home Depot ever deliver the fuckin' drywall.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

waterfall is usually a geological formation resulting from water, often in the form of a stream flowing over an erosion-resistant rock formation that forms a sudden break in elevation. Waterfalls may also be artificial, and they are sometimes used for garden and landscape ornaments. Some waterfalls form in mountain environments where erosion is rapid and stream courses may be subject to sudden and catastrophic change.

Playing pangolin (New Zealand/South Africa)

Tthe pride stopped to rest by a waterhole, but their attention was not on drinking. The lions in South Africa’s Tswalu Kalahari Private Game reserve had discovered a Temminck’s ground pangolin. This nocturnal, ant-eating mammal is armour-plated with scales made of fused hair, and it curls up into an almost impregnable ball when threatened.

To make these emoji Easter crafts, you’ll need paper mache eggs (easier IMO) or blown-out eggs (empty shells with the contents removed, yellow craft paint, and oil-based Sharpie paint pens for the faces.

Start by painting the eggs yellow and letting them completely dry. After the eggs are dry, use a pencil to draw the outline of the emoji face. Depending on your skill level, you can easily draw the emoji faces on with paint or paint markers — it’s up to you.

The tax which will be paid for the purpose of education is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests, and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance. -Thomas Jefferson, third US president, architect, and author (13 Apr 1743-1826)
