World Smile Day - October 1, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate World Smile Day

Sometimes all it takes to make the day better is a smile, whether it’s one someone gives to you, or one you share with another. Little acts of kindness can bring a shining smile to someone who has otherwise had a terrible day, and it can change everything that follows.

Whether it’s just a simple compliment, a cheery hello, or a gift of something small to help brighten their day, World Smile Day encourages you to take action to bring a few more smiles into the world.

History of World Smile Day

It was a simple thing, a circle with a few dots and an upturned curve, but put together Harvey Ball created one of the most iconic symbols the world had ever seen, and it would quickly come to infect everything from graffiti to modern day emoji’s.

We are, of course, talking about the smiley face, arguably the first emoji to enter the world. Harvey would later express concern that the sheer commercialization of his little symbol would strip it of its original intent and meaning.

It was out of this concern that he created World Smile Day, a day devoted to the spreading of simple joy and love to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or geographic location.

Harvey sadly passed from this world in 2001, but the foundation he helped create, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, has carried forth his message of simple peace and love as the sponsor of World Smile Day every year.

Whether you’re simply expressing a bit of silliness or doing a small act of kindness to help someone smile, World Smile Day is your opportunity to help brighten the world and make the world a better place through the simple power of the smile.

JOKE OF THE DAY
thanks, Jill
A fellow jumped off a high wall,
And had a most terrible fall.
He went back to bed,
With a bump on his head,
That's why you don't jump off a wall.

John Haberle (1856–1933) was an American painter in the trompe-l'œil (literally, "fool the eye") style.
His still lifes of ordinary objects are painted in such a way that the painting can be mistaken for the objects themselves. He is considered one of the three major figures—together with William Harnett and John F. Peto—practicing this form of still life painting in the United States in the last quarter of the 19th century.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, October 1st

You are a success-oriented, charming, and personally powerful individual. You are at your best when you are in control, your own boss, or working on your own. However, you get along with others and have the necessary "people skills" to do so, although occasionally, your impatience comes through! You are proud and not always willing to ask for help. You are eager to work hard for what you want, and you generally appear confident. You have a good head for business, and you are also quick to respond to changes. Famous people born today:

1881 William Boeing, American aviation pioneer who founded The Boeing Company, born in Detroit, Michigan (d. 1956)

1910 Bonnie Parker, American outlaw of Bonnie and Clyde fame, born in Rowena, Texas (d. 1934)

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Jamaica is the only country in the world whose flag doesn't contain the colors red, white, or blue.

William Phelps Eno, the inventor of the stop sign, the pedestrian crosswalk, the one-way street, the taxi stand, and the pedestrian safety island, never learned how to drive.

Google turns a blind eye as data of 30+ million users is still being leaked

In total, our Investigations team found user tables in 14 top Android apps with 142.5 million collective installs. Thankfully, the four apps I mentioned above have had their issues fixed and no longer have their databases exposed to potential threat actors.

However, nine of the app developers have neither fixed all of their misconfigurations, nor responded to our repeated warnings.

To address the situation, we first reached out to Google on September 14 and asked them to help the developers secure their Firebase real-time databases.

Having received an automated response without a follow-up, we made another attempt at contacting Google via their press office three days later. The end result was identical: an automated reply email without any follow-up or explanation.

Needless to say, without input from Google, the leaks of those apps have not been plugged.

As of the time of this writing, Google still has not responded to our queries, while nine popular Android apps are potentially leaking the data of at least 30.5 million users.

We hope that the release of this investigation will prompt Google to react and resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

Note: As soon as we hear back from Google and the misconfigurations are fixed, we will update the article to include all the exposed apps our researchers discovered.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Carts have many different shapes but the basic idea of transporting material (or maintaining a collection of materials in a portable fashion) remains. Carts usually have two or four wheels. Those with four wheels (also known as drays or wagons) will often have a pivoting front axle that has a pole connected to the collars or yoke of the two guiding draught animals.

Tigerland
Animals in their environment in a remote forest, high in the Himalayas of central Bhutan, a Bengal tiger fixes his gaze on the camera. The path he treads is part of a network linking the country’s national parks – corridors that are key to the conservation of this endangered subspecies but unprotected from logging and poaching.

ICE BREAKER

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

CLEVER

Use your cereal spoon to keep milk from splashing when you pour it. Add your cereal to the bowl, then lay your spoon upside down on top of it. Pour the milk slowly onto the underside of the spoon’s head. You’ll notice far less splashing than when you pour the milk directly onto the cereal. Alternatively, add the milk to the bowl first, then the cereal!

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
In our world of big names, curiously, our true heroes tend to be anonymous. In this life of illusion and quasi-illusion, the person of solid virtues who can be admired for something more substantial than his well-knownness often proves to be the unsung hero: the teacher, the nurse, the mother, the honest cop, the hard worker at lonely, underpaid, unglamorous, unpublicized jobs. -Daniel J Boorstin, historian, professor, attorney, and writer (1 Oct 1914-2004)
