International Artists' Day - October 25, 2021

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Int'l Artists' Day

Art has been an important part of the human experience for time out of mind, the first records of the world are not written in books, but are captured in paintings, sculptures, and music that helps to paint a picture of world lost to the past.

Whether it’s revealing a style of dress worn in a period by the clothing worn in the painting, or the slight heresy’s hidden in some of the world’s most religious works, art can reveal a hidden or lost side of us to the present.

Learn about International Artist Day

International Artists Day honors those creative souls that will leave a record of today for the future that can’t be captured in history books. The anguish and joy of the human soul is portrayed through the haunting tones of a melody, the violence and fury caught in a photograph, or the serene gaze of a statue staring off into eternity.

International Artist Day has been created so that we can celebrate the incredible world of art and all of the amazing and creative work that artists around the world carry out. We should all take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact that art has had on us and the world around us. This does not only relate to paintings. After all, there are so many different forms of art, ranging from sculpture to drawing.

It takes a special type of person to be an artist. This is a person that thinks outside of the box. An artist is naturally creative and they usually see things from a different perspective. The work that they produce is outstanding, and for those of us who don’t have a creative bone in our bodies, we can really appreciate their talents!

History of International Artist Day

International Artist Day was founded by Chris MacClure, a Canadian artist who specializes in the style known as ‘Romantic Realism’. His paintings were a way to bring out his own “Romantic Realist” views on life, and have served to make him one of Canada’s most important artists. He created this day to bring recognition to the world of art, and to celebrate all the ways that artists bring their own special view to life.

JOKE OF THE DAY .. Halloween

WORD OF THE DAY

breadcrumb

Hansel & Gretel leaving breadcrumbs

MEANING:
noun:
1. A small fragment of bread.
2. One in a series of markers placed as a navigational aid.
3. One of several hints or clues leading to a person, place, etc.

ETYMOLOGY:
From bread, from Old English bread + crumb, from Old English cruma. Earliest documented use: 1519.

NOTES:
In the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, their parents drop the two siblings off in the forest because they are not able to feed them (if only there was a strong social safety net). The smart kids drop breadcrumbs along the way so they can trace their steps back and find their way home.
In computing, website design, etc., breadcrumbs help users as a navigation aid and tell them where they are in a program, website, etc.

USAGE:
“He leads you around with a trail of almost imperceptible breadcrumbs into worlds you never knew existed.”

IDIOM OF THE DAY

What does 'Beat the daylights out of someone' mean?

Meaning: If someone beats the daylights out of another person, they hit them repeatedly. ('Knock' can also be used and it can be made even stronger by saying 'the living daylights'.)

Your appetite for life and experience is big, but you also know that you have to work to achieve all that you want. Your sense of humor is sarcastic. Seldom afraid of a challenge, your approach to problems is to embrace them and then conquer them! You are charismatic, bold, and intelligent. (Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Paper cuts are so painful because paper is rough at a microscopic level. While knives make straight cuts, paper cuts like a saw blade, doing more damage to nerve endings and your skin cells.

Getting stabbed by a pencil can leave a mark on your skin for decades because graphite particles are left in the dermis layer of the skin. The same layer of skin where tattoo ink is placed.

If you try to hold a sneeze, you can injure your diaphragm,
bruise your eye, rupture an eardrum, or even burst a blood
vessel in your brain.

Taking Flight

Lake Nakuru, Kenya, before the rising sun had burned off the mist, flamingos and used shade, shadow and silhouette to create drama, rather than emphasising their vivid colours with sunlight- rain during the night, a rapidly clearing sky, enough time for the cold air to form mist over the alkaline waters, and a hyena hunting for young or infirm birds along the far shore of the soda lake. The predator set up a wave of panic, with those closest to it taking flight and those nearest standing alert. Ten minutes later, not only had the whole flock lifted up, but the mist had also burned off, completely changing the scene.

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter (two sticks, softened)
2 eggs
1 cup Wesson or Crisco oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 1/8 cup rolled oats
1 cup rice krispies
1 cup sweetened coconut
1 cup chopped nuts (pecans are good)

Blend sugars and butter until well combined.

Add the oats, rice krispies, coconut and nuts.
Blend well.
You can refrigerate dough
Form golf-ball sized balls of dough and place on parchment-lined baking sheet.

Hallowe'en in Canada this year.....

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Those who compare the age in which their lot has fallen with a golden age which exists only in imagination, may talk of degeneracy and decay; but no man who is correctly informed as to the past, will be disposed to take a morose or desponding view of the present. -Thomas Babington Macaulay, author and statesman (25 Oct 1800-1859)
