DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Restless Legs Awareness Day

Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of this medical condition or syndrome. It is held on the same day each year to coincide with the birth date of Professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born 23rd September 1907, died 1977). This eminent Swedish neurologist first wrote and described the disease in 1945. Since then, a lot has been learned about its symptoms although (to date) there is no known primary cause. It may be associated with dopamine or blood iron levels.

Characterised by urges to move the legs even when at rest, it can also sometimes occur in the arms. Secondary causes include some medication or other pre-disposing medical conditions.

International Awareness Day aims to increase understanding of RLS and the jerky movements and in some cases distress caused. A cure is still being sought. In 2013, the North Carolina (USA) proclaimed that this day should be observed by all citizens.

History

The Concordat of Worms (1122)

The Concordat of Worms was an agreement reached by Pope Calixtus II and Holy Roman Emperor Henry V that put an end to the first phase of the power struggle between Rome and what was becoming the Holy Roman Empire. Under its terms, the king was recognized as having the right to invest bishops "by the lance" but not "by ring and staff," meaning he could grant them secular but not sacred authority.

Mickey Rooney (1920)

Rooney was an American actor who began his career when he was just 17 months old, as part of his family's vaudeville act, and made his film debut at 6. He went on to star in 50 RKO short comedies, and his diminutive size allowed him to play boys until he was nearly 30. From 1937, he played the cocky, energetic Andy Hardy in a series of popular films, often teamed with Judy Garland. In 1983, he received an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement.

Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival

Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival is California's oldest wine festival, held since the late 1890s in Sonoma, the cradle of the state's wine industry. It is located in Sonoma Valley, which Jack London made famous as the "Valley of the Moon." In the 1850s, Hungarian nobleman Count Agoston Haraszthy planted thousands of cuttings from European grape vines to establish the Buena Vista Winery, now the state's oldest premium winery. The three-day festival includes wine tastings, parades, live music, a blessing of the grapes, a firemen's water fight, and grape stomps.

1964 - The new ceiling painting of the Paris Opera house was unveiled. The work was done by Russian-born artist Marc Chagall.

1998 - Jamie Lee Curtis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1999 - Siegfried & Roy received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

-Three pieces are at Columbia City Gallery’s annual juried exhibit: "H2O - What is It Worth?" Seattle WA Aug 17-Sep 25. “Heartwood Char” received Best in Show. It was reaffirming to hear that all three jurors went right to “Heartwood Char.”

-10x10x10, Tieton WA Aug 13 – Oct 9. Yea! They wanted all three rock books!

-Brand Library "Brand 44" Aug – Nov Glendale, CA, Laddie John Dill, juror. I’m thrilled that so distinguished a juror picked out this piece.

-United States Botanic Garden "Celebrating the Flora of National Parks" Washington DC Feb-Oct. This exhibit remains up, and one surprised visitor friend sent me snapshots of it.

-Lynnwood Public Library "Books without Words" Lynnwood WA Jun-Jul: I had 10 of my small artist books on display – a great synergy for a library display!

-“Expression Northwest,” Art Port Townsend, Merit Award Jul-Aug. I fell in love with a polished antique fire truck seen on Highway 101 near Forks, WA, where it was being used as a signboard. I asked permission to sit in the parking lot and paint it from life.

- Springfield Art Museum "Watercolor USA 2016" Springfield MO Jun-Aug. This annual national exhibit selects work that stretches the boundaries of the medium.

-Artist-in-Residence, Glacier National Park, Jun. I had a wonderful time getting to know a place almost completely new to me. I was struck by mountain vistas with foreground fires, and to painted whole scenes instead of individual burned trees. See my last 8 blog posts for more.

-“Waterworks 2016” Tsuga Gallery, Bothell WA Oct 25 – Nov 25. Happy to have “Iceberg Lake” from my recent residency in the Northwest Watercolor Society’s upcoming membership show. It was drawn on location but painted once I got in out of the rain!

-Artist-in-Residence, Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve, CO, late Oct. Once again I head off to an unknown place – this time just down the road from Mesa Verde National Park.

-Zion National Park Plein Air Invitational Springdale UT Nov 7-13. So looking forward to seeing those favorite places and people for the fourth year in a row.

Henri Frenay (1905–1988) was a French military officer and French resistance member. Born in Lyon, Frenay joined the Army and reached the rank of captain in 1934. In World War II, after being captured by and escaping Nazi German forces, he formed the French Resistance group Mouvement de Libération Nationale. Before the end of the war, Frenay edited underground newspapers, helped establish the Combat group, and participated in the forming of the Conseil National de la Résistance.
