National Son and Daughter Day - August 11, 2020

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Son and Daughter Day
Son and Daughter Day | RitiRiwaz
The best inheritance a parent can give his children is a few minutes of his time each day.
Whether sons and daughters are young or old, teenagers or toddlers, the bond between parent and child is like no other on earth and this annual celebration ensures the miracle of bringing new life into the world is never forgotten.
Son and Daughter Day has been created so that you can let your children know how special they are, and vice versa. It is a great opportunity for families to spend special moments together. Life is lived at such a fast pace today, and so it can be easy to let moments pass us by. That’s why Son and Daughter Day is such a special day. You can learn about what inspires your children. Find out about their hopes and dreams. You can learn about each other and teach other different things. It’s all about spending quality time together.
After all, the time that we share with our children can be fleeting. We often hear parents remark at the fact that their children have grown up within the blink of an eye. Plus, not only do kids grow up, but their needs and their interests change as well. This is why it is important to make time for some special moments with our children.

Strengthening your bond with your children

Being a parent is not easy, and sometimes we need to work hard on the relationships that we have with our children. There are a number of different things that you can do in order to strengthen parent-child relationships. This includes telling your children that you love them every day. It does not matter how old or they are or whether or not they say it back (after all, a lot of children reach that age whereby they feel too embarrassed!); you should tell your children that you love them.
Aside from this, you should spend some time to play with your children every day. This could be anything from singing songs together to playing board games. No matter what you do, simply make sure that it is something that you enjoy together. Older children enjoy playing computer games, chess, and cards, so don’t think that they won’t enjoy some quality time with you.
Another way to strengthen your bond with your children is to let them help you. Sometimes parents inadvertently miss out on the chance for closeness because they do not allow their kids to assist them with different chores and tasks. Children like to do what their parents are doing. Yes, it can often be easier to simply do tasks yourself. However, by getting your children involved, it helps to create a closer bond and it makes your child feel important. For example, if you are unloading the groceries after going to the store, choose a light bag, and ask your child if they would carry it in for you. You may think that little things like this don’t matter, but they really can make a difference when it comes to the bond that you share with your little ones.

History of Son and Daughter Day

Though the origins of Son and Daughter Day are unknown, it is celebrated widely across the world simply by parents spending time with their children and letting them know how special they are to them. The best gift to give on Son and Daughter Day is the gift of time.
It is worth pointing out that there have been some records of Son and Daughter Day in history. For example, the earliest observance of this day can be dated back to the 11th of August in 1988. It is mentioned in an article from the Nanaimo Daily News, which is for the British Columbia region in Canada. However, if you dig deeper, you will find that there have been references to this date even earlier in history. For instance, in the St. Joseph News-Press Gazette, this date was referenced on the 20th of August in 1944.
One of the earliest mentions of someone having a specific idea for a Son and Daughter Day come with K Henry Dusenberry in 1936. This is when he pursued the idea of a Son and Daughter Day after he had heard a child ask why there was not such a date already. Because of this, he began the day in Missouri, and it started to spread from there. In honor of the date, parents would place a flower representing each of their kids in a vase, placing it in a prominent room in their home. On this date, parents would gaze at their flowers and think about their children, especially if their children no longer lived with them.

Kirinia roxelana
Kirinia roxelana, the lattice brown, is a butterfly in the family
East. It is found in a variety of habitats such as warm, dry
grassland and scrubland near woodland, forest verges,
vineyards and olive groves, usually in association with rocks
or stone walls. It is a large butterfly with a wing length of about
3 cm (1.2 in); adults are most commonly on the wing between
May and July, while caterpillars feed on broad-leaved grasses.
Like other members of its family, it stands on only four legs
while the other two remain curled up. The wings are covered
with minute scales, and their distinctive pattern help the
butterfly protect itself by camouflage. This photograph shows

Moxie is a brand of carbonated beverage that was among the first mass-produced soft drinks in the United States. It continues to be regionally popular today, particularly in New England and Houston, Texas.[2] It is produced by the Moxie Beverage Company of Bedford, New Hampshire. Moxie was purchased by the Coca-Cola company in 2018.
Moxie's flavor is unique, a sweet drink with a bitter aftertaste.[3] Moxie is flavored with gentian root extract, an extremely bitter substance commonly used in herbal medicine. It originated around 1876 as a patent medicinecalled "Moxie Nerve Food".[4]
Moxie is closely associated with the state of Maine and was designated the official soft drink of Maine on May 10, 2005.[5] Its creator, Dr. Augustin Thompson, was born in Union, Maine, but Moxie was created and first produced in Lowell, Massachusetts.[6]

The name has become the word "moxie" in American English, a noun meaning courage, daring, or determination.

TIDBITS
  • Derived from the brand advertising, "moxie" has become an English word meaning "courage, daring, or spirit",[23].
  • In Mad magazine, in the 1950s, the Alfred E. Neuman character had a look-alike girlfriend named Moxie Cowznofski. Just as with the name "Cowznofski", Moxie itself (often in logotyped form) became a running in-joke in Mad issues of the period.
  • In the 1942 musical biopic about George M. CohanYankee Doodle DandyJames Cagney, as Cohan, has a friendly confrontation with Eddie Foy, Jr., playing his father, Eddie Foy. At the end, Cohan asks what Foy likes to drink, and Foy answers "Oh, Moxie."
  • There is a Moxie Museum in Union, Maine, which houses a 30-foot-tall wooden Moxie bottle, once used as a soda stand, and other historical Moxie artifacts. This is an annex to the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage, which is located at the Union Fairgrounds.
  • Every summer, "all things Moxie" are celebrated at the Moxie Festival in Lisbon Falls, Maine.[27] Cancelled this year.
  • Moxie is mentioned in the independent film Man with a Plan (1996) as the favorite beverage of the titular dairy farmer and congressional candidate.
  • In the movie Small Apartments (2012), the character Franklin Franklin drinks only Moxie and nothing else.
  • In Stephen King's novel 11/22/63, Moxie and the Moxie Festival are mentioned in Chapter 2, Part 4.
  • There is an ad for orange Moxie during a dream sequence in Joe Hill's novel Heart-Shaped Box
In Stephen Sondheim's musical Saturday Night, there is a lyric which goes, "The moon's like an overloaded Moxie sign. It shines at you, friendly and bright."
  • In the episode "Return to Spider Skull Island" of The Venture Bros., Dr. Orpheus attempts to order Moxie, then Birch Beer and Mr. Pibb, at a diner, only to be told that the only sodas they offer are grape, orange, or cola.
  • In the season 2 finale of Better Call Saul, Jimmy McGill releases a commercial in which an elderly woman says "Gimme Jimmy! Because Moxie is in such short supply these days!"
  • In Stephen King's novel Salem's Lot, Part 3, chapter 16, "Carl Smith, a widower since 1957, has one boiled potato and a bottle of Moxie."
  • In the Bugs Bunny cartoon, "Ballot Box Bunny", directed by Friz Freleng, Bugs is seen putting out bottles of Moxie at a picnic.
  • In the Harvard Lampoon novel Bored of the Rings, Moxie and Pepsi are the satirical analogs of Merry and Pippin in The Lord of the Rings.
  • In the episode "Apartment Complex" of The King of Queens, Doug offers Carrie a Moxie soda when she discovers his secret apartment above the Chinese restaurant.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The hands that help are better far / Than lips that pray. / Love is the ever gleaming star / That leads the way, / That shines, not on vague worlds of bliss, / But on a paradise in this. -Robert Green Ingersoll, lawyer and orator (11 Aug 1833-1899)
