Use Your Common Sense Day - November 4, 2019

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Use Your Common Sense Day
Image result for Celebrate Use Your Common Sense Day
Every day we see complete fails of Common Sense, stupid and fantastic examples of the horror that can occur when someone just… refuses… to think. Sometimes it’s a matter of hubris, people thinking that their over-inflated sense of self-importance can overcome the laws of physics. Other times it’s just a complete failure to take a moment to really think a thing through, and thus do something monumentally stupid.
Let’s take for example the USPS service letter that indicates if you can’t speak English, or fail to understand the letter, to take it to the local post office. How precisely would they know to do that? Or how about the woman who called the police to report that her ex was texting her, a fact she was able to ascertain because it was, and I quote, “In her handwriting.”

History of Use Your Common Sense Day

Use Your Common Sense Day was established by Bud Bilanich, a career mentor with a reputation for focusing of being “The Common Sense Guy.” He’s been featured on some of the most prominent TV stations and magazines, and has written 19 books that emphasize how to succeed at your life, and how the application of common sense is absolutely vital to that success.
Common Sense as a concept is ancient, first being codified by Aristotle in describing the raw analysis of the animal mind of the five specialized sense perceptions. This was then carried forward in the Roman interpretation, which presents the concept as ideas and perceptions held by the common man. A sense of the common. Through a long and twisty development, and through many future interpretations, common sense has come to be the knowledge of simple, sensible things… Like not putting your iPhone in the microwave to recharge it.

Word of the Day

glad hand or glad-hand

glad_hand

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney on the campaign trail, 2012

MEANING:
noun: A hearty welcome or greeting, often insincere.
verb tr., intr.: To greet warmly, often insincerely.

ETYMOLOGY:
From glad, from Old English glaed (bright, cheerful) + hand, from Old English hand. Earliest documented use: 1895.

NOTES:
Glad-handing is typically associated with politicians, used-car salesmen, and their ilk. There’s often a hidden agenda: they are not greeting so enthusiastically because they are delighted to see you, rather they want something from you. You’d never find a dog glad-handing or glad-pawing you (cats, maybe). When they come running, tails wagging, to greet you at the front door, they mean every bit of it.

USAGE:
“The PM himself was unable to suppress a beam of triumph, as he glad-handed his fellow leaders.”

Lightning is a giant discharge of electricity accompanied by a brilliant flash of light. The average lightning bolt is five miles in length and only 1 inch in width. It only seems to appear bigger because the bolt is so bright.

Lightning is extremely hot—a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. Lightning flashes more than 3 million times a day worldwide which equates to about 40 times a second. The average American has about a 1 in 5,000 chance of being struck by lightning during a lifetime.

A Shootout at the OK Corral! That expression or quote has been heard in movies and even in real life conversation. Was this a real event? Did it take place? It did. It took place 137 years ago today, October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona.
The Shootout at the OK Corral was a 30 second gunfight in which the Earp brothers (Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil) and Doc Holliday took on the 5 members of the Clanton-McLaury gang.

Howard Carter discovered a step leading to King Tutankhamun's tomb. However, Carter was not able to get his first look inside the tomb until Nov. 26. King Tut was born around 1341 B.C., and became King at a very young age (9 or 10). He died in 1323 B.C., and the cause of his death is still unknown. Various theories have included murder, accident, infection, illness or some combination of those factors. Many well-preserved items were found in King Tut's tomb, including a solid-gold coffin, thrones, chalices and a face mask that has become a highly recognizable symbol of ancient Egyptian artifacts. It took Carter 10 years to record the more than 5,000 items discovered in King Tut's tomb.

Nilgai
The nilgai or blue bull (Boselaphus tragocamelus) is the largest Asian antelope and is endemic to the Indian subcontinent. The sole member of the genus Boselaphus, the species was described and given its binomial name by German zoologist Peter Simon Pallas in 1766. The nilgai stands 1–1.5 metres (3.3–4.9 ft) at the shoulder; males weigh 109–288 kilograms (240–635 lb), and the lighter females 100–213 kilograms (220–470 lb). A sturdy thin-legged antelope, the nilgai is characterised by a sloping back, a deep neck with a white patch on the throat, a short crest of hair along the neck terminating in a tuft, and white facial spots. A column of pendant coarse hair hangs from the dewlap ridge below the white patch. Sexual dimorphism is prominent – while females and juveniles are orange to tawny, adult males have a bluish-grey coat. Only males possess horns, which are 15–24 centimetres (5.9–9.4 in) in length. This picture shows a male nilgai in a potato field at Jamtra, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

thanks for the Little Larry jokes, Joan
A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!'
After a few seconds, little Larry stood up.
The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Larry?'
'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'

SUDOKU ... easy

solution:

Larry watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. 'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked.
'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.
'What's the matter," asked Larry 'Giving up?'

The math teacher saw that Larry wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Larry! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?'
Larry quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!'

1. The Kindergarten Wolfartsweier in Karlsruhe, Germany, is shaped like a giant cat, with windows for eyes and a slide for a tail! 2. The bodies of a man and woman who died 4,000 years ago have been found buried face-to-face in a grave in Kazakhstan! 3. The unique scent you smell when opening a box of new crayons is thanks to the beef fat used in the wax!

Larry's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person.
'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.' Larry asked,
"Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture? "

CLEVER
Copper pot over flame
One of the enduring reasons for gold's popularity is that it doesn't corrode or tarnish, so it just takes a quick wipe to make it shiny again. That's not the case with a lot of other beautiful metals, like copper, brass or silver. Even stainless steel can become grubby-looking over time, if it's not looked after. Beer's mild acidity makes it an excellent cleanser for many of these metals. Soak copper pans or silver and brass decorative pieces in leftover beer, then wipe them down to remove the loosened soil and tarnish. A splash of still-bubbly beer can even help foam off stuck-on food. Beer will also wash away the soapy buildup from your kitchen and bathroom faucets.

Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?'
His father replied, 'because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....

A few unknown facts to a lot of people (Part 1)

1.

There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London, which used to have a gallows adjacent to it. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course!) to be hanged. The horse-drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''ONE LAST DRINK''. If he said YES, it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD. If he declined, that Prisoner was ON THE WAGON.

2.
They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were "piss poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk, who couldn't even afford to buy a pot, they "Didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.

3.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water.
The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies.
By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it! Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!"

4.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people, so they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house and reuse the grave! When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus someone could be, ''Saved by the Bell ''or was considered a ''Dead Ringer'' And that's the truth!!
