Celebrate Gunpowder Day
Remember, remember! The fifth of November, The Gunpowder treason and plot…
Known as Guy Fawkes Night or Fireworks Night, Gunpowder Day focuses on the plot by Guy Fawkes and other conspirators to blow up Britain’s parliament in 1605. Rebelling against the persecution of Catholics by King James I, they planned to kill the monarch during his visit to parliament. But the scheme was foiled and the traitors executed.
On Gunpowder Day, families construct an effigy of Guy Fawkes to be burned on a bonfire that evening. Fireworks are also set off to add to the celebrations. Public displays are also held and the biggest celebration of Gunpowder Day is in Lewes in East Sussex, England.
Six bonfire societies host their own fireworks displays and gargantuan bonfires. After sunset, a large procession of all of the societies moves through Lewes. Many members carry flame torches and a river of fire can be seen flowing through the town during the evening.

Word of the Day
fingerpost
A fingerpost in Rushton, Cheshire, UK
MEANING:
noun:
1. A post with one or more signs pointing toward one or more places.
2. Something or someone serving as a guide.
ETYMOLOGY:
From the resemblance of the sign to the fingers of a hand. Earliest documented use: 1738.
NOTES:
A fingerpost is a post with long thin boards pointing toward various locations. These boards may look like fingers on a hand, hence the name. Sometimes these boards actually terminate in a pointing finger. The Oxford English Dictionary lists another sense of the word fingerpost: a parson or a member of the clergy. As this citation from the A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1785 tells it:
“Finger post, a parson, so called, because like the finger post, he points out a way he probably will never go, i.e. the way to heaven.”
USAGE:
“The title [of the poem] isn’t a hint or a fingerpost so much as the Reader’s Digest condensed version.”
William Logan; Shelley’s Wrinkled Lip, Smith’s Gigantic Leg; Parnassus: Poetry in Review (New York); 2011.

Pictures of the day
Pictures of the day
Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e translates as 'picture[s] of the floating world'. This picture is a colour woodblock print (chūban) entitled Two Lovers Beneath an Umbrella in the Snow, produced by ukiyo-e artist Suzuki Harunobu around 1767 and now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. His delicate, romantic prints were amongst the first to realize expressive and complex color designs, printed with up to a dozen separate blocks to handle the different colors and half-tones. His restrained, graceful prints invoked the classicism of waka poetry and Yamato-e painting. The prolific Harunobu was the dominant ukiyo-e artist of his time. The success of his colorful nishiki-e from 1765 on led to a steep decline in demand for the limited palettes of benizuri-e and urushi-e, as well as hand-colored prints.

Fabric Styrofoam Ball Pattern!
Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating! My favorite thing to do on Thanksgiving Day/Day after Thanksgiving is to make things! I love getting cozy at home with my yarn, fabric, fiber and lots of pumpkin pie and make all sorts of Holiday crafts.
I wanted to share this free fabric styrofoam ball pattern with you - this is something I love making, just can't make enough of them and it's easy enough to make with family (even my hubby gets in the mix and makes a few!) You can use different colors of fabric for a harvest or holiday theme. They can be used in the tree as ornaments by stringing ribbon in the bottom, hang them in windows, set along the mantle or placed in a bowl as table decoration. Lots of lovely ways to use them!
Details behind the cut....
Supplies are easy, most of them you'll probably already have around the house. You'll need -
- Fabric - your choice of colors and prints. The amount you need depends on the size of the styrofoam balls you use and how thick you place the fabric. My mileage is between 1/4-1/2 yard per ball. I recommend starting with a 1/2 yard and see how much you have left and go from there.
- Rotary cutter mat, cutter and ruler
- Silver flathead pins
- Thimble
- Styrofoam/Polystyrene Balls your choice of sizes (I used 2 and 3.25 inches)
Start by cutting your fabric in 2 inch strips as shown above.
After you've cut the strips, cut each strip into 2 inch widths so you end up with 2x2inch squares
You'll have a nice pretty stack of squares!
Now, pull up a chair, put on a movie and let's get pinning! Start by pinning a square of fabric to the top of the styrofoam ball on each of the four corners.
Now, you're going to learn how to fold the fabric squares. Start by folding the fabric in half.
Next, fold the fabric in half again and hold it as shown above. The open edge should be on the right and the bottom. The top left corner should have the point.
Now, pin. Place the fabric on the ball covering part of the fabric square you already have. Pin just the left hand corner with the finished point pointing up
Now, pin the second one. You'll place a pin on the left hand side of the second square effectively pinning both sides of the first square, and the left side of the second.
You continue doing this around and around and finish the first round.
Start a second round slightly offset from the first and continue on your way, round after round.
Continue along to the bottom. As the ball gets smaller, make the fabric squares closer and closer together. When you get to the bottom, finish it as shown above. A few squares stacked on top of each other to create a finishing touch.
Voila! You've made a fabric ball! Gorgeous!
Here's a sampling of the latest balls I've completed. Note how the changes in fabric completely change the look and feel. Large scale prints, sparkly, leaves, trees and more. Each one is unique and gorgeous!

CLEVER
Remove Rust
It'll pickle your vegetables and eat through your rust. Simple white vinegar is truly an incredible asset. Ideally, you'll submerge the rusty object in a mixture of vinegar and salt, and let it soak at least overnight. For larger objects, pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray it over the rusted area. Use a stiff brush to remove the rust and thoroughly rinse the object.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

OPTICAL ILLUSION
To drivers about to drive across this crosswalk, it looks like Charlie Brown and his gang are marching across the road. To pedestrians waiting to cross the street, the gang looks 2-dimensional and stretched out.
We love seeing how a small shift in perspective can make everything appear different. Not to mention, this is actually a great way to get motorists to slow down.
