Transylvanian Noble György Dózsa Roasted and Eaten as Punishment (1514)
Known for his wartime valor, Dózsa was tasked with leading an army for Pope Leo X's crusade in 1514. Though he assembled some 100,000 peasants, plans for the crusade were suddenly suspended. The peasants refused to disband, deciding instead to avenge mistreatment by their landlords. Rebellion quickly became full-scale revolution, with Dózsa's troops murdering nobles and burning castles. |
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (1919)
Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer who, with Tenzing Norgay of Nepal, became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Following the expedition, Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust, which built many schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people of Nepal. He continued climbing, later participated in the first crossing of Antarctica by vehicle, and even searched for the legendary abominable snowman in 1960.
Colombia Independence Day
On the day they celebrate their independence from Spain, Colombians in the capital city of Bogotá often visit a historic place known as La Casa del Florero (The House of the Flowerpot). It was here that a Colombian storekeeper refused to lend a large flowerpot to the Spaniards. A riot ensued—the beginning of the revolt against Spain. There are Independence Day parades throughout the country on July 20. Schoolchildren march in their uniforms, and dancers perform in the costumes of their region. In the afternoon, people watch athletic games and listen to singing groups perform folk songs. |

Almost every home has ceiling fans and while we don't see it, they get really dusty. Using an old pillowcase, cover the blades, one at a time, then pull the case towards you. The dust will be contained in the pillowcase not falling on your head. After you're done dusting, just throw the case into the washer.

History of Straw hats & Felt hats
Historians generally agree that some form of head-covering must have been the first article of apparel put on by primitive man. Heads were certainly covered wherever sun and rain were severe.
The sculptures of Egypt, the drawings of ancient China, and heads on coins of early Greece and Rome indicate the hat has always been a mark of rank.
Felt is believed to have been discovered by the nomadic tribes of Asia, who made tents and garments by felting sheep's wool. One of its early uses in headwear was in the Roman 'petasus', a narrow-brimmed skull-cap which was the general head covering of the populace. Slaves were not permitted to wear it, and a ceremony in connection with making the slave a free man was the presentation of the citizen's petasus.
By 1600 fur felt was pretty well established as the proper material for a man's hat. The hat-making qualities of beaver from the New World were specially noted. Later the tall beaver came into fashion and crowns reached a height of 7 inches or more.
The derby hat was invented by William Bowler, a London hatter, and originally came as a piece of riding headwear, more practical for active sports than the high beaver hats that dominated for street wear. The bowler was called a derby by a hatter in this country who sponsored it after noting its general use at the English Derby race.
The straw Panama hat broke the spell of the derby. Men who began enjoying the bigger shady summer brim of the panama hat, were reluctant to return to the hard small-shaped derby in the Fall. Bigger brimmed soft felt hats became the fashion of fall and winter, and the derby became a hat for special or formal occasions.
The modern men and women wear hats that are at once smart and easy to wear. Never before have hat styles been so varied, colorful and attractive.
