Worldwide Knit in Public Day
”Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.”
~ Elizabeth Zimmerman
~ Elizabeth Zimmerman
Doubtless, we’ve all received those wonderfully knitted sweaters from our grandparents as we were growing up, but things have changed in the past decades. Knitting is no longer the province of the elderly but has been taken up by all ages as a way to create something lovely, to promote social change, and to spend some time peacefully meditating as they knit one, purl two their way to higher consciousness. Alright, that may be a bit hokey, but it is a relaxing practice often best enjoyed with a bottle of wine.
History of Worldwide Knit in Public DayThe world has knitter Danielle Landes to thank for World Wide Knit in Public Day (W.W.K.I.P.D) – and to say that the world’s knitters have turned out in their droves to support her quest to show that knitting is not just for grannies is something of an understatement. Each event – known as a KIP and brandishing the slogan ‘Better Living Through Stitching Together’ – is run by local groups and despite its reputation as a single day often takes the form of a week-long celebration of both knitting and alternative fiber art forms. The popularity of these KIPs continues to grow, with groups often choosing a theme for their particular event. Popular themes include knitting for hospitals, community art projects, environmental concerns, and premature babies – all of which are worthy causes to benefit from those with a love of yarn.Word of the Day

History
Secretariat Wins the Triple Crown (1973)
Thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat was the first US Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting records in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes that still stand today. In fact, in the 40 years since, only one Derby winner has even come close to matching Secretariat's time of 1:59.40. Secretariat advanced from last to first to win the Preakness and won the Belmont Stakes by an unprecedented 31 lengths.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836)
Anderson was the first licensed female physician, as well as the first female mayor, in England. Denied admission by many medical schools, she studied privately with physicians before finally earning a license from the Scottish Society of Apothecaries. Largely as a result of her efforts, British examining boards later opened their examinations to women. Anderson championed the idea of medical care by female doctors for female patients. |
Uganda National Heroes Day
Uganda National Heroes Day honors all those who sacrificed themselves to better the lives of the Ugandan people. Unfortunately, the holiday is one of the most divisive days in the Ugandan year. What constitutes a hero, and who specifically should be honored, are matters of debate in the country. Many of the heroes officially recognized by the government are fallen soldiers who died during Uganda's civil war in the 1980s; some citizens have argued for remembering less controversial heroes, such as the Ugandan doctor who detected a deadly Ebola outbreak before it spread.
