Celebrate Public Service Day
”Public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the people and to the nation.
~ Margaret Chase Smith
History of Public Service DayTo engage in public service is to work to improve fundamental human rights, such as access to water, homes, and medical treatment. Those who work with Volunteer Fire Departments and Ambulance Corps are involved in providing services like these, and aiding the security of our homes and ourselves every day. Without them, our cities and towns wouldn’t be nearly as safe, and there’d be no-one to respond when danger calls.
You may be surprised how many people you know that are involved in the public service industry. Do you know a mail carrier? How about a librarian? Did anyone you know serve in the military or work in education? All of these are types of public service, and without them, we wouldn’t live in the world of safety and security we do today.
The idea of public service first began in the 19th century as municipal services began to be developed, such as gas and water. As further services were provided by government agencies, the scope of what qualified as a public service expanded. Today we benefit from hundreds of community and public services, and we have the civil servants who work in these areas to thank for our creature comforts.

History
Edgardo Mortara Kidnapped from Jewish Family after Secret Baptism (1858)
Mortara, the son of a Jewish couple living in the Papal States, was secretly baptized Catholic as an infant by a panicked servant during an infantile illness. The baptism was deemed valid by the Catholic Church and, because canon law forbade non-Christians from raising Christian children, Pope Pius IX ordered the six-year-old Mortara to be taken to Rome as his ward. Several countries objected to the pope's decision and called for the boy to be returned to his parents. |
Wilma Glodean Rudolph (1940)
Rudolph was the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field in a single Olympic Games. She accomplished this despite having contracted numerous serious illnesses as a child, including polio, which damaged her leg and required her to wear a brace for some time. At the 1960 Games, she won gold in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and as part of the 4x100 meter relay. She finished the 100-meter dash in world-record time but was not credited with the record. |
Stonehenge Summer Solstice Ceremony
Stonehenge, the ancient stone circle located in Wiltshire, England, is believed to have been built between about 3050 and 1600 BCE. At the Summer Solstice, when viewed from the center of the monument, the sun rises through the entrance and just between two of the large stones. Today, modern Druids and other Neopagans gather at Stonehenge for Summer Solstice ceremonies. Wearing white robes and scarlet hoods, when the first rays of the rising sun shine on the Altar Stone, they walk in procession around the circle, gathering at the Altar Stone to recite prayers and salute the rising sun. |

Make Your Own Glass Succulent Planter

We all have glass bowls lying around in our cupboards that we are not able to find a use for, and this was one was mine. I thought it would look great as a succulent planter.
To turn the glass from drab to fab, I bought some thick elastic bands to create a pattern. Start by stretching the elastic bands around the outside of the glass bowl and flattened them to create flat straight lines.
Overlap them and just keep moving them around until you are happy with the design.
I bought some frosted glass spray paint to paint the outside. Place the bowl upside down to prevent spray from going on the inside of the bowl. Keep adding thin coats until you get the effect that you want and let it dry completely.
Once it is dry remove the elastic bands to reveal your design.
I wanted to put succulents into my planter because they are the only plants I can't seem to kill. I added gravel first for drainage. Next, I added some sea sand for a better cosmetic look and then soil suitable for succulents.
