No Beard Day OCTOBER 18, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate No Beard Day

There’s been a strong movement lately to return to the days when beards were seen as a strong statement of masculinity. In a bold counter movement, No Beard Day comes along to convince men to take a razor to that magnificently furry face and return to a baby smooth complexion. While some of us feel this is nothing worse than purest heresy (unless we can convince those hipsters to shave), No Beard Day adherents feel a clean face is a lovely face.
There is perhaps one strong argument for No Beard Day, and that’s its placement some time before the beginning of “Movember”, where men are encouraged to grow a truly outstanding mustache in recognition of the month. Maybe this holiday was brought into existence for no other purpose than to give the ‘contestants’ of Movember a way to get a fresh start.
Likely the result of razor companies trying to take some advantage of the otherwise costly Movember, No Beard Day encourages you to strike out and clean up that face mop you wear the rest of the year. (i am a fan of beards. ray has a full, lush, soft beard that i adore)

History

Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulcher Destroyed (1009 CE)


The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City is venerated by most Christians as the site of Jesus' burial chamber and has been an important destination of pilgrimage since the 4th century. Its destruction in 1009 by caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah is often viewed as a direct impetus for the Crusades, though the church was rebuilt prior to the Crusaders' arrival. The custodianship of the church is now grudgingly shared by several Churches.

Sicilian wall lizard
The Sicilian wall lizard (Podarcis waglerianus) is a species of lizard in the family Lacertidae. Endemic to Italy, it occurs in temperate forests, temperate shrub-land, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, temperate grassland, arable land, pastureland, and rural gardens in Sicily and the Aegadian Islands. The species' numbers are generally stable, and it has been listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

A colorful peafowl seems to take in the view on the other side of the wall at Ambras Castle in Innsbruck, Austria. Olena Prykhodko was so astonished to see the bird that she made this photo to remember the moment. “I would never [have] expected to find a peafowl in the middle of the Alps,” she writes, “because they live in warm [climates], and Austria is really cold!”

CrockPot Potato Leek Soup Recipe

 I meant to make potato leek soup eons ago, and never got around to it. My mom made some on the stove top over the weekend and brought over a container, and it egged me on to recreate it in the crockpot. I didn't add any heavy cream. You can, but I was pleased with the flavor and creaminess without a drop of cream.

The Ingredients.

--3 large leeks, cleaned and diced (you only use the white part)
--1 medium yellow onion, chopped
--1 pound brown potatoes (weigh them---you'll only need 2 or 3)
--5 cups broth (chicken or vegetable)
--1/2 tsp thyme
--1/4 tsp black pepper
--2 cloves chopped garlic
--1 cup heavy cream (optional)

The Directions.

Use the 6.5 quart eLume---peel the potatoes and chop everything up and toss it in with the broth and the spices.

If you are going to use heavy cream, you don't add that until cooking is complete.

Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours, or on high for about 4.

When the potatoes and onion are fully cooked and soft, use an immersible blender to soupify.
If you don't have an immersible blender, blend in small batches CAREFULLY in your traditional blender.

Stir in heavy cream, if desired.

The Verdict.

This is a light, creamy soup that is perfect for a starter course, or for sipping out of a mug on the couch. I'm going to have it for lunch this week. Adam packed some to take for lunch at work. The kids didn't try it, and thought it smelled gross. It does have an earthy smell while it cooks. I opened a window and turned on a fan

CHILDREN'S CORNER ... halloween craft (with some help)


Paper Plate Skeleton Tutorial


I love this guy.  I'm not big into Halloween, but this skeleton is based on a decoration my mama made when I was a little girl.  I recall hanging the skeleton up and getting excited about trick or treating as a child. When my oldest boy was 2, I called my mom to ask her how she made her skeleton.  She sent me a copy of the magazine photo that inspired her, and the paper plates to make him.  This was all back in our very poor college days! 
Since then, we've had this skeleton.  My kids love him, and were so excited to see him when I pulled out our fall decorations.  I thought he might be a simple and easy decoration you could whip together, with stuff you probably have on hand.  So, I'm sharing my version of this fun activity.  My little boy and I made a smaller version together so we could show you how to do it.  Making this paper skeleton is a fun and easy activity you can do with your kids, and have memories for years to come.


You will need:
  • 18 white paper plates, the cheap kind with fluted edges.
  • Templates, which you can find HERE
  • Pencil, Permanent Marker, and Scissors
  • Paper hole punch
  • Jute for tying everything together.
Step One.  Trace all your pieces onto the paper plates.  Using your templates, trace 10 bones, and then one of each head, shoulders, ribs, and hips.  For the hands and feet, use your own.  It makes the project a little more personal. 


Step two.  Cut all your pieces out. 


You should have one head, one shoulder/neck piece, one rib piece, one hip, two hands, two feet, and 10 long bones for arms and legs. 

Don't forget your skeleton's face.  This gives him a little personality.  

Step three.  Punch holes for joining. 


Step four.  Cut out approximately 4" pieces of jute, and tie your joints together.  I used a square knot. 


Using this photo as a guide, tie all the pieces together.  You might want to sing along as you go.  "The head bone's connected to the neck bone..."






Keep tying, until he's all put together. 


Now he's ready to hang on a wall and bring a smile to your child's face.
