Conflict Resolution Day is a global event, intended to promote the concept of peaceful conflict resolution. Created in 2005 by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), it is now an annual celebration.
Primarily an educational event, the main purpose of Conflict Resolution Day is to increase awareness of the various peaceful, non-violent methods of conflict resolution available, such as mediation and arbitration. In addition, the ACR hopes to promote their use in various different avenues of life, including in schools, workplaces, within the legal system and even among families.

In 1951, Lucille Ball became one of the first movie stars—and the first woman—to headline a television series. The prototypical situation comedy, I Love Lucy became a spectacular success, showcasing Ball's comic energy, flair for slapstick, and chemistry with her co-star and real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, as they portrayed the zany middle-class couple Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. The program is still syndicated today |

The Kenka Matsuri (Roughhouse Festival) takes place October 14-15 in Shirahama, Japan, and thousands flock to the shrine where the festival is held. The roughhousing starts as teams of mikoshi-bearers jostle each other for position in the procession to the Matsubara Hachiman Shrine. Once they reach the shrine, they spin their heavy burden, raise it up high in the air and let it crash to the ground—difficult maneuvers designed to thrill the crowd. The mikoshi engage in a final battle in an open field, where thousands of cheering spectators take sides and and egg them on. |

SMS Ägir was the second and final member of the Odin class of coastal defense ships built for the German Imperial Navy. Ägir was built by the Kaiserliche Werft Danzig shipyard between 1893 and 1896, and named for the eponymous Norse god. She was armed with a main battery of three 24-centimeter (9.4 in) guns. She served in the German fleet throughout the 1890s and was rebuilt in 1901–03. She served in the VI Battle Squadron after the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, but saw no action. Ägir was demobilized in 1915 and used as a tender thereafter. After the war, she was rebuilt as a merchant ship and served in this capacity until December 1929, when she was wrecked on the island of Gotland.

Taking a Peak
Photograph by Liz Barney
As beams of light from the setting sun burst through clouds, a triumphant hiker basks in their glow on a summit in Hawaii’s Ko’olau Range. The achievement, according to Liz Barney, who submitted this photo, was the culmination of rigorous preparation and effort. “It’s not a well-known trek … but for two women, it was their dream,” she says. “[The women] spent an entire year planning and training to cross the Ko’olau summit ridge line in one self-sufficient thru-hike ... They failed multiple times before they finally succeeded.”

Perfume Cake
Adapted from Victorian Cakes by Caroline B. King
Recipe by Jessica Reed
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup milk
6 whites from large eggs, at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons uniquely flavored extract, or more or less to taste
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup milk
6 whites from large eggs, at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons uniquely flavored extract, or more or less to taste
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Liberally butter a 10-inch, 12-cup tube pan.
Sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
Measure the milk and add the flavoring. Set aside.
Cream the softened butter with the sugar until fluffy. On low speed or by hand, mix in the dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with the fragrant milk, beginning and ending with the dry. Set aside.
Whip the egg whites to a stiff peak. Gently fold into the cake batter, mixing thoroughly but with a light hand.
Spoon batter into the pan, smoothing the top.
Bake 30-35 minutes until the top is lightly browned, edges are pulling away from the pan, and a tester comes out clean.
Dust liberally with powdered sugar.

Brie with Apricot Topping CrockPot Recipe
I didn't even try to light this properly and attempt a nice picture. Instead, I removed the stoneware from the base, wrapped it up in a beach towel, grabbed a sleeve of crackers and plopped on the couch in front of the TV. When Adam or the kids got near, I snarled and batted them away with my arm. This couldn't possibly taste any better.
The Ingredients.
adapted from the Halloween issue of Taste of Home
--1 large round or wedge of brie (the round I used was 13.2 oz)
--1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
--2 T brown sugar
--2 T water
--1 tsp balsamic vinegar
--1/4 tsp dried rosemary
--1/2 cup chopped walnuts
The Directions.
I used a 1.5 mini round crockpot. If you are going to use a big one, put the brie in an oven-safe dish. As long as the dish and the crockpot heat together, you're all good.
If your brie has a really hard rind, cut the top part off. This was the first time I had used this brand of brie---I've always reached for the stuff from Trader Joe's---and I was alarmed at how thick the rind was.
Put the brie into the crockpot.
In a bowl, mix the chopped apricots, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, water and rosemary together. Spoon on top of the brie.
Sprinkle on the chopped walnuts.
Cover and cook on high for 1-2 hours, or on low for about 3. Check after an hour in both cases just in case.
Serve with your favorite crackers or apple slices.
The Verdict.
I eventually shared with Adam. We had it as dinner. The flavor is so amazing, and the brie got so gooey and amazing. I think I just drooled a bit. mmmm.

EXOTIC WOODEN CARS SCULPTED BY HAND
HE'S EVEN CARVED HIS UNDERWEAR OUT OF WOOD!
IT’S HARD TO DRIVE IN VENICE
The cars are completely to scale
It’s impossible for most people to drive their cars in the water-filled streets of Venice, but it’s just another day in the life of Livio Di Marchi. He makes his cars out of wood and has turned them into boats he can “drive” down the canals of Venice.
It weighs a hefty 3300 lbs, but this Jag has traded its classic straight-six engine for a 20-horsepower inboard boat motor.
JAG DOESN’T FLOAT YOUR BOAT?
We have a multitude of Livio’s Cars in the Ripley’s Collection:

If you’re worried about narrow streets, try a wooden Vespa!

SOMETHING MORE MAGICAL
Di Marhci’s skills aren’t limited to just cars. Livio has even whittled a full-size fairy tale pumpkin carriage, which—of course—is also amphibious.
Cinderella’s Carriage
REALLY OBSESSED WITH WOOD
Livio’s love for wood doesn’t stop with just vehicles. He has carved his home, fence, bed, teddy bears, clothes, dishes, stove, hat, table cloths, coffee pot, lunchbox, armchair, lamp, books, cups, bottles, cutlery, flower, and even underwear out of wood. Believe It Or Not!
