DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Darwin Day
Darwin Day celebrates the anniversary of the birth of the famous evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin. Darwin was an English naturalist who developed the modern theory of evolution. Along with naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, he proposed the principle of natural selection: the mechanism by which advantageous variations are passed on to later generations and less advantageous traits slowly disappear. Darwin's intensely controversial theory of evolution aroused widespread argument and debate among scientists and religious leader when it was first announced.

Also known as Oglethorpe Day, February 12 commemorates the day in 1733 whenJames Edward Oglethorpe and 120 other Englishmen landed in Savannah, Georgia, to establish a new colony. In 1965, the anniversary of the state's founding was officially proclaimed Georgia Day. On February 12, there is a procession through the historic town of Savannah and a luncheon. Since 1966, there has been a reenactment of Oglethorpe's landing, with costumed residents playing the roles of Georgia's first European settlers and of the American Indians who greeted them upon their arrival. |

Many people believe that the best time to schedule surgery is during the day, but what if you can't control when you go under the knife? According to a new study, it doesn't matter. The study found no difference in patient deaths when comparing daytime and nighttime trauma surgeries. The research focused on US mortality rates in exploratory laparotomies, which are done to determine the extent of a trauma patient’s injuries. Some experts have called for additional research that focuses on more complex surgeries and the number of hours surgeons worked before operating. |

Slow Cooker 20 to 40 Clove Garlic Chicken
This is a reader recipe sent in by Veronica.
Thank you so much, Veronica-----this is a fantastic recipe. She usually uses about 20 cloves of garlic, and I tried to go up to 40 cloves, but ended up only having 33 in the house to use. I used two packages of drumsticks for the chicken, but you could easily throw a whole bird in or use 3-4 pounds of your favorite chicken parts.
The Ingredients.
serves 6
3-4 pounds chicken
1 large onion (or 2 bitties, like I used), sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons kosher salt
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon pepper
20-40 garlic cloves, peeled, but intact
The Directions.
I used a 6 quart oval slow cooker. Place onion slices on the bottom of the stoneware insert. In a large mixing bowl, toss chicken parts with olive oil, salt, paprika, pepper, and all of the garlic cloves. Pour into slow cooker, on top of the onion.
Do not add water.
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 4-6. The longer you cook chicken-on-the-bone, the more tender it will be. If you use drumsticks, the ones on the side will brown and may stick to the sides of the crock, burning a bit. If this bothers you, you can rearrange them with tongs an hour before serving.
I cooked our chicken on low for 7 hours, then kept it on warm for another 2.
Veronica serves her chicken with a salad, mashed potatoes, corn, and green beans. I served it with quinoa and asparagus.
The Verdict.
This is wonderful! The onion and garlic had a mild, nutty garlic flavor that was a bit sweet. Some of the larger cloves of garlic that were still intact were kind of strong---they itched my nose. The kids ate the chicken (no onions or garlic for them) dipped in bbq sauce. Adam and I each ate 3 drumsticks that night. Thank you so much, Veronica!

Surprising Things You Didn’t Know About Ken
Barbie’s favorite accessory has an interesting history of his own.
Ken’s last name is Carson.
He is named after the son of Mattel founders Ruth and Elliott Handler.
He was introduced on March 11, 1961, which makes him two years and two days younger than Barbie.
The first Ken doll sold for $3.50 (that would be the equivalent of $27.41 today).
Also, he was available as either a blonde or a brunette.
Like Barbie, Ken is from Willows, Wisc.
Which is a fictional town.
According to Mattel, Ken first met Barbie on the set of their first television commercial together.
Ken is half an inch taller than Barbie.
He stands exactly 12 inches tall.
In 1964, Ken’s “buddy” Allan was introduced — much to his delight.
Bonus: According to the box, “All of Ken’s clothes fit him!”
Introduced in 1981, Sunsational Malibu Ken doll was the first African-American Ken.
He was introduced a year after the first African-American Barbie was released. However, there were African-American Barbies prior to 1980 — they were named Christie and Brad.
Released in 1993, Earring Magic Ken became a huge seller among gay men, which was mainly due to the way he was dressed — and the fact that he appeared to be wearing a “cock ring” as a necklace.
While the doll was a big seller, it was discontinued and remaining dolls were recalled.
He is also the biggest-selling Ken doll of all time.
Ken has one brother, Tommy.
Tommy was introduced in 1997.
After his breakup with Barbie in 2004, he stalked her on Match.com:
Toy Story 3 was Ken’s big screen debut. He also sported 50 costume changes in the film.
In 2009, Mattel, clearly having not learned its lesson from the Earring Magic Ken debacle, introduced “Sugar Daddy Ken” (for real) from its Palm Beach line.
Mattel defended the name, saying: “At the end of the day, this collection is targeted toward adults. While the name of the doll does refer back to the dog, I think people are going to interpret it as they want to interpret it.”
Surprising Things You Don’t Know About Barbie
All those years spent playing together and you didn’t even know her real name.
Barbie’s real name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.
In 1959, the first Barbie doll sold for $3.00 (that would be the equivalent of $23.97 today).
The first Barbie doll was available as either a blonde or a brunette.
The first Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan and their clothes were hand-stitched by Japanese workers.
Barbie’s were manufactured in Japan until 1972.
Barbie isn’t from Malibu, she is actually from (fictional) Willows, Wisconsin.
Barbie was originally a 17-year-old “Teen Age Fashion Model.”
Over the years, Barbie has had seven siblings: Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Krissy, Kelly, Tutti, and Todd.
She has had more than 130 careers; they have included being an elementary school teacher, a business executive, a McDonald’s cashier, a doctor, an astronaut, and yes, even a rapper.
Ken is two years and two days younger than Barbie (he was introduced in 1961).
Ken has never put a ring on it (he and Barbie have never officially been married).
The very first Barbie car was a 1962 Austin Healy roadster.
Barbie’s first pet was a horse named Dancer. Since then, she has had more than 50 other pets, including 21 dogs, 6 cats, a chimpanzee, a panda, a parrot, a lion cub, a giraffe, and a zebra.
Brown is the color most frequently used for Barbie’s eye shadow.
In 1985, Andy Warhol created a silkscreen painting of Barbie.
According to his posthumous book, The Andy Warhol Diaries, he hated it and cringed when he unveiled it for the President of Mattel.
Totally Hair Barbie (1992) is the best-selling Barbie doll ever.
In 2004, after breaking up with Ken, she had a rebound relationship with Blaine, an Australian surfer.
Ken and Barbie got back together on Valentine’s Day 2011.
Barbie has never been pregnant (only her best friend Midge has).
Aqua’s 1997 song, “Barbie Girl,” was the subject of the lawsuit Mattel v. MCA Records. In 2002, Mattel lost the lawsuit, a Court of Appeals ruled that the song was protected under the First Amendment as “parody and a social commentary.”n 2009, despite the lawsuit, Mattel released a music video of Barbie singing, “Barbie Girl” (a re-recorded version with modified lyrics)
